Title: Lagging
Post by: Josellis on December 02, 2006, 06:53:37 am
I played to Trelous for the first time today, and my first impression was "wow". Firstly,  it is a totally free game, but this game was playing perfectly on my computer (which is now 7 years old ...). The problem which really stopped me from enjoying my first moments while playing was the lag. I had a constant 1-2 second lag. I would shoot, then I'd shoot again after. Something when I moved, but much more annoying. I would move, then I'd go back to where I was and move again.

I would like to know if I can do anything on my side to improve my ping (I assume this is why I'm lagging). btw, I live in Australia, I do not know if physical distance influences the ping in anyways.

In other games, I have never experienced any lagging.

Thank you

ps: sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum

Hello!

Welcome to trem.

As odin suggested open your console while in game (the ~ key) and type "/rate 25000".

Also, physical location DOES make a difference. So you should try to play on servers located closest to you (search around these forums, talk some of the austrem guys) and you should do OK.

If you are behind a Nat'd router and are running windows, make sure UpNp is enabled on the router.

Make sure that you close any sort of P2P application.

You are from Australia.

If you were playing in a Game Arena server, of course you got lag!
If you weren't, then your internet, or somone elses, sucks!

Off Topic: Where in Aus are you from. I myself am from Melbourne.

Because of my VERY old computer, I always close every other aplication running when I play a game (P2P, internet, mail, etc.) the only program I leave is my antivirus.

Now, what does the /rate25000 do to improve the lag?

Also, what is Game Arena?

and MC Artman, I'm from the Albury/Wodonga region (on the Victorian side :) )

Well, 7 years old is a long time…
Mine is around 5 years old. Tremulous runs OK, but with a lot of people, it's not so great. It might be your internet port having a too low transfer rate.
Hope this helps.

I'm from Australia too!

There is a space between the numbers and rate. Rate is the variable that determines the amount(or size?)of network packets that the game sends and receives to and from the server. The higher the better.

Game Arena is the server most Australian players go to. There are 3 of the servers and if you sort the servers by ping then they should be at the top.

I think the /rate25000 made the whole difference. Now, I can play without having any lag (unless someone on the home network is downloading something).

Thank you  :D
