Title: 10 seconds from losing my mind
Post by: Bender on December 05, 2006, 12:08:37 am
Well, the scoop.

I can't see the main server list. It's been like this for 3 days. I can, however, access all my favorites. However, clicking "new list" and "refresh list" when on the Internet Source provides 10 seconds of lag, followed by no servers.

When I found this out, I immediately thought firewall. So I go into Panda Titanium Antivirus (2005), fiddle around and make sure everything is work with my firewall. Nothing seems to have changed, it still says tremulous is inbound and outbound, so it should be working. Because my Antivirus was just updated, however, all the program lists get refreshed, meaning, when I accesse Firefox or Internet Explorer for the first time after updating I get a little warning asking me to accept or deny the connection. However, when playing tremulous, I noticed I did not get my usual connection notice, just a different notice, asking me to grant entry permissions, which I did. However, I have fiddled with my antivirus for over an hour now (read everything I could online and on the help system provided by Panda), yielding no results. I have all my usual options on, such as "Display Warning when connection is attempted", which gives me the option to allow or deny the connection, yet I can't seem to get this message.

I am not fully convinced this is entirely my Panda Firewall thats doing this, because like I said, I can play on all my favorites list. I have no other active firewall at the moment, and all my hard drive is clean from viruses and spyware.

If it is of any note, I usually click on a server, than get the making connection page for less than 2 seconds, then the map loads. However, since the updating of my antivirus, it now takes 8 seconds at the server list, then the making connection page appears, then the map loads.

Any help is appreciated. Save yourself the 5 seconds - 2 minutes it takes to write unintelligent responses; you usually end up making yourself look twice as retarded as the person asking the question.

Thanks.

It could have something to do with the master server changing.
don't see how, but the timing fits.

It could be something with that lag, since Tremulous ignores servers that dont reply in 800ms (0,8seconds). Unfortunanely i cant figure out anything that could help you :(
Well afterall you should check your firewall again. Tremulous uses UDP connections and firewall might have some options for them but cause servers work directly this sounds wrong too..

Go into the console after a finished new list. Check for "x servers with 800 ping filtered out".

Somethief: Thanks, but I really have spent a ton of time on my antivirus, yet I havn't been able to fix it. I have also tried playing with my Panda off entirely, still nothing.

Odin, I do not get that message. I hit refresh, and it says "getting info for -1 servers", which, if I am correct, is what is shows when you usually have a firewall problem.

Really appreciate your responses, but remember, I can still play on all servers on my favorite list.

Ok it sounds like master server trouble, i got no idea what can be wrong with it  :(
Try: startmenu -> Run.. -> cmd -> ping master.tremulous.net
and paste us what it says (If you are on linux i except you know howto ping servers)

As examble here are my replies:
Code: [Select]
C:\>ping master.tremulous.net

Pinging tremulous.tjw.org [72.36.226.187] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 72.36.226.187: bytes=32 time=160ms TTL=46
Reply from 72.36.226.187: bytes=32 time=160ms TTL=42
Reply from 72.36.226.187: bytes=32 time=160ms TTL=46
Reply from 72.36.226.187: bytes=32 time=160ms TTL=46

Ping statistics for 72.36.226.187:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 160ms, Maximum =  160ms, Average =  160ms

If you get results like i got your system finds trem master server just fine and iam out of guides about it but it's worth of a try

Thief, good find...

Code: [Select]
C:\Documents and Settings\*******>ping master.tremulous.net
Ping request could not find host master.tremulous.net. Please check the name and
 try again.

Ok, thats a great help, do you know where to go from there, thief?

my guess is that when they moved it, some DNS cache got a wrong value (can that happen??)

The IP is 72.36.226.187 (at the moment, does it change?)
try putting it in the hosts file.
i *think* on windows its C:/windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts
and then stick a line
master.tremulous.net 72.36.226.187

this is of course only a temp fix, if it even works.

David: If that is indeed the right IP at the moment, it doesn't work.

I really appreciate all your help guys.

EDIT: I switched the IP around and now it does work.. at the moment. Thanks David. Does anyone know for a fact if the IP keeps changing?

I guess its case closed   Thanks for everyones help.

The problem is that your machine cached dns record and didnt update it.
You can update DNS cache by executing on command line (where you did that ping thing): ipconfig /flushdns

Which does:
Code: [Select]
C:\>ipconfig /flushdns

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache.

Notice that hosts listed in hosts file OVERRIDE this cache!

I'm having the same problem, have been sicne saturday.  I pinged the master server (this morning actually for me) and it has the same IP address as the one David wrote down.  I dont know if it matters, but its pinging the master server with 32 bytes of data.  It then procedes to say "Request timed out" 3 times, and then it closes.  I also treid running the ipconfig /flushdns, but i have no idea wtf it did cuz it was open for all of a split second before it closed, so I have no idea what it said.  Any further advice? If its worth knowing....I run tremulous off my portable 12gb hard drive.  The reason for this is because if I dont, my GUID# will always be changing (since deep freeze wipes the comps clean/I hardly ever get the same comp more than once per day).  I did make a post about this earlier in the year, and its fixed.

Your ISP's DNS cache is outdated, editing hosts file like David said should fix this problem (You need to reboot after modifiying it, dunno if ipconfig /renew works for it so just reboot your machine)

That might work, but u didnt read my entier psot then.  The campus computers I'm on have deep freeze, restarting it will wipe out the host mod.  I havent treid it this afternoon, but tis worth noting that yesterday afternoon to evening "get new list" worked.  This morning it didnt.  So I'll see how it works right now.

Then you prolly got no rights to ipconfig so flushing dns cache is useless :/
Sry but i cant figure out any fix for this nor know how to change master server host in Tremulous (If somebody knows, tell us ^^)

What really makes me mad is how it seems to be random.  I was able to get a new list and was palying without any problems late afternoon early evening yesterday.  This morning it jsut doesnt want to work again.  Whats frikken bs, is my one friend is playing it right now.  Hes like right scross the room from me, and he said he didnt have any troubles this time.  And I also know for a fact hes had this problem too.  So wtf does it seem random?

Is there some setting to change what master server trem uses?
Just put the IP there and skip DNS.

U mean putting the ip in a line in the hosts file? If so I alrdy did that (do i keep the one (s) alrdy there?).  Still wont work.  And it worked last night and I hadnt done any of this crap.  Until saturday I havent touched a blessed thing that would make it start doing this.  And I do play it almost every day, so theres no frikken way the dns can be out of date.  And as for the fav servers....if I can ever get on again i can try it i suppose.  Sumone in my clan said that hes had this problem before, and that all he did was log out of the server or somesuch thing and that seemed to fix it. Any ideas what that means?

Clearly the internet gods hate me.  I just deleted absolutly everything tremulous related from the computer AND my portable hard drive.  I then spent 20-30 mins redownloading the isntallation executable.  Finished that, reinstalled it AFTER i restarted the comp.  Didnt work.  I then proceded to switch computers.  STILL wont work.  It seems the game just hates me now, which isnt a 1st, life jsut sucks rofl.  :P Sigh o well....anybody have ANY CLUE AT ALL WHY THE FRIKKEN GAY FAG SOB POS GAME WONT WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As you cant ping the server, and it only started after the mater server moved, my guess would be a dodgy / dead router between you and the master server, except that that would have been fixed by now.

Until this gets fixed, in the user/tremulous folder there should be a file called servercache.dat, which I think is the list of servers.

If you replace it with this one http://www.freefileupload.net/file.php?file=files/061206/1165442824/servercache.dat and never press the update list button it might work.
This list will become out of date quite quickly, so only a temp fix.

I get the same problem. Sometimes when I enter Trem, and click "New List" the music replays the same spot and I have to press enter a couple million times before it actually exits. I immediately repair my connection, and when I do it again, it should be fine. But sometimes it doesn't work, so i reset my router, and it should work from there.

If you joined this thread from a link, please read it since your problem is probably fixed earlier in it.

And dont reinstall Trem since it got nothing to with it if you can't ping the master server. I could imagine that this problem is because of firewalls, since for most of people master server seems to be running just fine.
Right now i dont have any more ideas but i will figure out something

The fire wall aint no problem.  When I 1st got trem, I hardly ever hit the "unblock" button that the firewall spat up until after I was done playing.  I cant do anything about this anywho in the end probably.  For all I know its sum gay fag problem with the campus network.  Who knows.  As for what David said, does that mean I cant refresh the list if I use that file?

You should be able to use update (If iam wrong, its not my faulth  8)) since it just refreshes server info without master server between. Clicking get new lists clears servercache and requests new list from the master so avoid it

Ok wtf, I told u this is random.  It is working again now.  Odd.  O well now to make a favorites list!  Is it at all possible to change the wkey without actually having the file of the otherone i want to seu to replace it? IE, can i open the one i have, locate the actual # and change it to the 1 I want?

I've been  having the same problem for a few days, let me tell you how far I got with throubleshooting (not very far, but maybe someone will find some useful bit of data in it):

- The bug manifests itself slightly differently on my computer: Sometime I get the message "getting info for -1 servers" and it keeps flashing indefinitely, and sometimes I get "getting info for 110 servers" (sometimes 108, sometimes 109, etc.), but it only flashes for a few seconds, then goes away. The latter would suggest to me that the computer can at least partially see the main server, since it retrieves information about how many servers the main one is tracking at the moment.

- Ping to master.tremulous.net returns perfectly, without data loss and in a timely manner.

- Having Win98, I have no DNS cache, so can't flush it.

- Entering "master.tremulous.net 72.36.226.187" or "72.36.226.187 master.tremulous.net" into either the "hosts" file or "hosts.sam" (or both) doesn't change anything.

Well, that's where I am presently. Also, I used to be able to run Tremulous perfectly in the past (say, a few months ago), and nothing has changed in my hardware or software environment ever since. Actually, one software change I can think of was installed Quake 1 in the meantime, but I'm strongly doubt that has anything to do with the thing even though Tremulous uses the Quake engine, too.

Win98 is VERY outdated, you really should update to newer one. I dunno if hosts file already works in win98 so unfortunanely iam out of ideas :/

Well, tell me about it. Alas, updating is not very likely in the immediate future. As for hosts files, sure they exist in Win98. I didn't just create one for myself, it's been sitting there since the OS was installed.

I have a similar problem. I don't see any server in my list... Setting is OK... Rasz pl told me, it's connection mistake and I have to change provider. But my friend has the same provider as me, and he hasn't got this problem... I can't join my favourites and I sometimes see only Tremulous.info servers- Alpha, Omega, Derilect EU... I also tried ping master.tremulous.net and it's ok...

And my console writes: 108 servers not listed due to packet loss or ping higher than 800.
Title: 10 seconds from losing my mind
Post by: Bender on December 22, 2006, 08:26:53 pm
Predator, that is a result of you having too much ping.

Open up the console and write these things in:

/cl_maxpackets125
/rate 25000
/snaps 40

Those should all help.
Title: 10 seconds from losing my mind
Post by: Premier on December 26, 2006, 02:10:23 pm
Bender, I'm trying to do the same thing, since I'm also getting the same message in the console, but it doesn't work.

I enter the three lines in the console (only with a space between "/cl_maxpackets" and "125"), and THEN try Get New List, but I still get the same message about packet loss and/or high ping. I've tried lowering all the values to half, quarter and tenth of what you said, still the same result.

Any other things to try?
