Title: N00b question
Post by: dude11235 on December 08, 2006, 09:09:18 pm
I was wondering how to send private messages. because sometimes when something happens and I want to talk to specific user to avoid confusion well...I can't, so I'd like to know how to send private messages.

Thanks!

do /m <Name> <Massage>

eg
/m David Hi!
or /m [Clan] to send to everyone in that clan

You can also do /mt to only match people in your team.

If you didn't gather from that.. it does a partial search and sends to people with that partial search in their name..
something to "ab" will go to
"abc" "abe" "abadteamkillingnoob" etc... so be careful.

OK-

The flip side of the question is how does the other person read their private message?  Why can't the message appear in yet another color to just the intended player like team chat and all chat have different colors?

A nice possible future addition to this game would be to add some type of menu for private messaging.

Missed my point - sorry I wasn't more explicit.

Yes, I understand and have seen the big "YOU GOT A PRIVATE MESSAGE", but to have to use the console to read and reply is a bit, um, let say retro.  And I beg to differ, it does need a better PM system.  I'm not that big of a gamer, but I don't know of any current game that uses the console for chat.

pms do appear on ur screen, they dont shoot directly to ur console (at least i cant remember this happening) they stay on screen the same amount of time as normal messages. Also you do not have to type /m <frag> <msg> into the console, you can hit either 'talk1' or 'talk2' (im not sure about talk3 and talk4, i dont have them anymore) and just type /m into the Say: and Team Say: menues just like it is the console.

Tun - Aren't you the one that made us yawn by your total noobishness when asking how to host a server?  (A relatively simple task that is well documented and many of us do all the time.)  Never answering the questions of the people trying to help and doing no research on your own.

Don't come in here with a worthless post like this.  We will remember to do the same next time you ask a question.

Hey Cave-

He caught me before my morning coffee (in this part of the world it's still early) where I have little patience for crap like that.  He contributes absolutely nothing and shows what a jerk he is.  I didn't realize he was that big of a lamer.

(Hmmm - Seems like I need another cup-)

The "YOU GOT A PRIVATE MESSAGE THING" in the center of your screen can be distracting and isn't in svn. The svn announcement for private messages is even worse :-/

No rude necro comments please-

I have yet to read an explanation ANYWHERE on how to read a private message that was sent to me.  I get so many of them, it's about time I figured out the details. YES!  I know it says "You have a private message" in the middle of my screen, but I have no idea how to read the message.  Obviously I can read the announcement.

I have read all the Wikis, searched this forum ad nauseum, even spent time going through the way too many Q3 sites to see if they spelled it out and if it might be the same, but no luck.

Please, no noob comments.  The title says it all.  I know this is a noob question, and I know how to SEND an in-game PM.  But no where in this thread (or any other that I can find) does it say how to read the messages that are sent to me.

Spell it out Kevlarman.  I know about the console.  Does the message just appear when I pull down the console?  WHAT?

well it should say

<something in yellow> YOUR_PM_IS_HERE
<more stuff in yellow> WHO_IT_WAS_SENT_TO (?)

that should be relatively close

the message appears like any other chat, but scrolls away almost instantly.

I want to be able to send email and use IM protocols from within Tremulous, so the time I spend camping at my base is time well spent.

Why not go further? Lets make trem console be able to handle VoIP's, graphics, livecams and making coffee?

mmm, coffee  :D

Done!  Dual monitors handle it pretty well with Tremulous running on one and your favorite apps on the other.  Every now and then Trem will glitch a bit when there is incoming mail/IM announcements but still very playable.

I appreciate your insightful help and reply to my question Lava.
