I have been experiencing some very annoying crashes that seem to have no cause. I'm using the latest TJW client, my graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440, I have the 91.47 drivers and the error log that Windows want to send to Microsoft has this in it:

The game seems to randomly quit to the "Would you like to send Microsoft data about this error" screen, it only seems to do this when I'm in an internet server, a /devmap doesn't seem to do this.
Anyone have any idea what the problem is?

guessing from the file-dates in those messages I'd say you desperately want to update everything on your computer.
-
Well I checked for updates and Windows update says everything is up to date. Thanks for that idea though.
-
I can't quite blieve that, as
ORIGINAL_FILENAME="kernel32" ... LINK_DATE="07/05/2006 10:55:00" UPTO_LINK_DATE="07/05/2006
is certainly not up to date.
-
Thats better than the BSOD i sometimes get

Well, how would I update that?

Did you recently get those NVIDIA drivers? I have the same card on my old pc, and it gets iffy with new drivers. Try the 44.03 - 45.xx

It is the most recent NVIDIA drivers, I've tired the 77 ones, but I haven't tried the 44.03-45.xx ones, thanks for the tip, I'll go get those and see if it works.
Edit: it seems to work, but while playing at beergarden i got an error I've never seen before. link (http://tremulous.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=42359)

Try running tremulous from command line and post the last few lines after the game crashes. There's also much more info than just that XML list of application modules.

No they aren't the most recent drivers. The most recent are the 93.71 released in November 2006 : http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_93.71.html
And man, those 4x.xx drivers are OLD!
-
According to many hardware/3d acceleration sites, those are best drivers for the card. Although they have this unified driver architecture, newer drivers really only address performance on current cards.

Bull... There are a lot of instances of OpenGL apps NOT working correctly with old cards on old drivers. Unified drivers means a lot of common code anyway, especialy with the software part of OpenGL. New driver versions also means bug fixes and new algorithms which can improve performance for all cards.
Besides, those "great" drivers you talk about sure crash with some really cryptic error on Tremulous don't you think? => http://tremulous.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=42359

Oops, i'll go try those drivers.

So is my card, looking for a new one though. Any recommendations?

Even a GeForce 3 would be an upgrade from you current card :D GeForce 4 MX cards is a pretty low quality model, even from it's time :)
If you do not want to put too much money on a new card, a GeForce 7300 something is very very cheap ( 50-70 € ) , and gets all the pixel shader and vertex shader goodies of the 7xxx models. And besides, it's easy to find fanless models of those for a really silent experience :) The card isn't very fast for modern standards though but it should get trem working fast enouth I think.

...
Thanks for the advice.
Edit: I've been looking at this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814141036) one, it sounds pretty good, and I've got a fan that I can install right over it.
I do have another card that might work, but I know virtually nothing about it. It's a Voodoo5 5500, would this be a better card than my GeForce4 MX 440? And if so, does anyone know who makes the Voodoo5, so I can get drivers?

Man, you must live in a computer museum. Voodoo5 manufacture stopped over 5 years ago after 3dfx (the main manufacturer and Voodoo graphics(tm) owner) had been bought by nVidia and they're barely equal to GeForce2. BTW, if you're really going to install it, get a reeeeeeeeeally good power supply. That thing needs a lot of power to work.
-
...
Thanks for letting me know that my GeForce 4 is better than the voodoo5.
And mostly it's just my graphics card that's really old, my processor is a 1.67 gigahertz AMD Athlon XP, I have an 80 gig hard drive and 512 megs of ram, and an SB Live! mp3+ sound card. Not really new stuff, but not as old as my graphics card.
-
Yeah, Voodoo 5 is really old, but if you could always try it anyway. Finding drivers for it could be a real problem. But thanks for the 3DFX fans, there are a bunch of unofficial Windows XP drivers available.
Note that since you are using an old computer, you'll have to be very careful about a new graphics card since there is no guarantee that you could use it.
PS : next_ghost says that the Voodoo 5 is barely equal to a GeForce 2. Then again a GeForce 4 MX is also barely equal to a GeForce 2 too ;)

Good point. I was looking to upgrade, it'll probably take a while though, seeing as how an advanced system is very expensive.
