Title: Random-Seed.net Server is closed (UPDATE: It's Back!)
Post by: DjSonik on January 14, 2007, 02:50:19 pm
Me, being one of the four admins of the R-S server, am sorry to say that the Random-Seed.net server is closed. Here is a quote from Xteraco, the server administrator:

"I've been doing alot of thinking about what I can do about this Trem thing, and my new lack of bandwidth. I weighed all the options very carefully and came to the conclusion that I'm just going to have to shut it down. I'll run a full rotation for one last weekend. After that, I will be removing the Trem section from the forum, and shutting the Trem server down indefinately.

Its very unfortunate that VT doesent offer the bandwidth required to keep running the server, but unless someone wants to make a serious donation (so I can get a T1) then there is just no way for me to make it work well.

I'm going to be testing out a few other Multi-player fps's that I like to see if any of them have a more efficient networking system, if not, then random-seed.net will be purely a webserver unfortunately.

If you are interested, and I find a game that can run happily on low bandwidth, I will be more then happy to give admin rights to previous admins. So basically, you have admin rights to whatever games run on the rsnet server, if you want it.

Again, I'm sorry for all this, it totally blows, I know. Perhaps if a new cable provider comes to town, or I find the means to afford a T1, rsnet will host Trem games once again."

He also moved from a 15Mbps line to a 6Mbps line, which totally sucks.

And also, I know the server used to be totally lame, but ever since we got the TJW's build and the admins, its been a smooth ride.
So yeah, sorry to dissapoint everyone who enjoyed a good game or two on RSnet.

(Also, if your gonna bash RSnet, I'm not gonna immaturely bitch about it and try to defend myself in a totally idiotic manner like some other people. :P)

6Mbit/sec should be more than enough for a small server (~14 players), assuming anything else on the server is set up to properly share cpu time and bandwidth (apache and mysqld come to mind)

Uh, you don't need nearly that.  The upload speed is the real problem, as most providers short-shrift you on upload.  With 768Kbps upload you can reliably have 10 players, 12 if the wind is behind your bits :p

MG Beta, when it was central, regularly hosted 11-12 players on a 1.5Mbps/768Kbps connection.  It's a really good network (speakeasy) which helps too. 11-12 started to become laggy, but playable, over 12 became unplayable.  I am near the range limit for dsl, so I suspect that my connection would be better if I were closer, and I could host even more players on my connection.  He may have only have 384Kbps up with the "lesser" package.  That would seriously cut has capabilities.  6-8 on the high end, with a good network.

In any event, 6Mbps is more that enough to host a large server on download.

That sucks. It was one of the few servers where I got a really good ping. Its players were often quite noobish, though. And ATCS gets quite boring after a while.

He wanted a large server, I told him that just making the capacity 12 was fine, but he didn't listen :P

you got flamed not because you asked for money, but because of the way you asked (or maybe demanded would be a more appropriate term).

indeed, you said some of us wouldn't like it, but there are people who'd like to go to SST then other servers :-?

anyways, is Random-Seed supposed to be the parody of Gundam Seed?
Never heard of that server too... but I really wanna try it!

That is an easy one to explain :)
You see... This server is not hosted by some kind of shady hosting company that demands and pays ridiculus prices.
Oh and did I mention that they also don't offer TS-servers w/o being an acredited TS-Hoster?
Hmm and did these ppl ask for money and insult us in the same post? No? I guess that must be it.

@ holyknight-
a random seed is a number used to start a pseudorandom number generator, usually for security reasons.

And, random-seed server is coming back, 8-player(?) until the owner gets a more stable line.

Edit - nice owl pics. :granger:
