Title: Research/Upgrades
Post by: Odin on January 17, 2007, 02:25:32 am
Some of you may have played various RTS games. You may recall that all RTS games contain upgrades/research for new/better equipment. Since Tremulous is a fusion of FPS and RTS, how about when stages increase, you can go to the defense computer, open a menu, and select an upgrade to research? So instead of instantly gaining the ability to buy Pulse Rifles/helmets/etc, you have to research it first?
The aim of this suggestion is to increase the usage of defense computers. Most teams past stage 2 don't even build the defense computer, and I think it's a little unused.
Aliens could have their alternative by opening the upgrade menu through the booster.

Sounds very familiar. I think we had this proposal some time ago.

I haven't either, but I've browsed through the manual somewhat, trying to compare it to Trem.

who cares about that old-looking raggy def comp? Who needs that junk? Who needs that awesome eletric-shocking defense tower thinggie? Who needs a tower that will help us from Tyrants? Who needs a building that without it, humans will get owned?

turrets do more damage than teslas if all the bullets hit (like if the turret is shooting at a tyrant), the only use for teslas is to keep goons and maras off the top of your reactor.

The problem with this idea is it leads to lots of extra buildings which become useless junk after they research the pulse rifle, etc...   And it'd lead to useless builder fighting as to whether to build the pulse rifle factory or the LuciCannon factory etc... with limited build points.  That'd kill the fun of customability as playing humans.

I think the better way is to go with the system in place, and just string out the equipment by simply adding extra levels, like S4 for LuciCannon/Tyrants.  Something like a Server side option.

It doesn't have to include extra buildings, just that the weapon has to researched first before it becomes available.

We could use a new team resource, that, for every kill, your team gets something from it, the amount depends on the enemy's equipment.

Spend credits/evos towards a research fund.
When the fund is big enough, you get a new tech.
In addition to research, you could buy BP instead.
Once you are done researching every last thing, you can buy some more BP.

you guys are trying to make tremulous more RTS and RTS...
and soon FPS fanatics will go *BOOM* and rebel against the tremulous.

and then maybe RTS fanatics and FPS fantarics will start having a war, FPS fanatics with guns, arrows, swords, and others while RTS fanatics controlling mindless toys.

It seems like it would do more harm than good.

Noobs wouldn't help out with research, so in many cases, it would just make it harder to get good guns.

maybe if an individual on your team gets 100 kills, your team gets ponies from research. If your team gets 300 collective kills, you get fish from research. If two people on your team get 100 kills, you get a pink bunny cannon from research.

While you said it in a horribly flamish way, disrespecting the atmosphere on these forums, you are correct. The defcomp is useless.

The core issue of upgrades does not work with this game. It is currently balancd, and making humans wait to use their big guns will most likely unbalance it.

you are not a god here rekov, don't attemt to try being one. He is actually respecting the atmosphere of the forums, considering the condition of the posts here. Further attempts will probably garner more flames like this.

Daemons refer supernatural beings between mortals and gods, such as inferior divinities and ghosts of dead heroes, classical Greek mythology.
Demons refer to supernatural being that has generally been described as a malevolent spirit, Christian mythology.

I think its just a phase the community is going through... "OMG, teslas are useless don't build them! I heard it from another mindless follower who was yelled by another wannabe who calls himself a pro builder."

Some questions that must be asked before you trade the tesla with turrets for damage:

How much knock back does the tesla have on a rant? If it is significant, you must consider those turret arcs that are taken out quite easily during SD rant rushes. Teslas may provide enough kick to slow that down. Even if thats not feasible, 2 teslas tucked behind the corners of a door are far more durable vs kamikaze dretches than two turrets in the same spot, and dretches wear turrets quite a bit before rants try direct attacks.

That is the key, if they are in the open, use turrets, if they are hidden around a corner teslas are good.

Teslas are good for only a few situations:
- When you need something big to block the LOS to some other most crutial building
- When you REALLY need to prevent all maras from jumping above the turret line ( problem of the big ceiling rooms and turrets slow turning rate )
- When for some reason or another, you want the Tesla to fire at multiple targets. Not sure which situation it would be though.

Tesla knockback is ridiculous on Tyrants and on Goons. I'm not sure it is even worth mentioning it in that situation.

And for the turrets around a corner, place them farther away. Bullets are instant fire anyway and the farther away they are from the corner, the easier it'll be for them to track their target.

Teslas have less damage per second, they're more snipable, they cost more, and they block humans more then turrets do, teslas are the human's barricade, I find them pointless, for every four teslas you could have five turrets, more effective imo. The only place I use teslas is in ATCS, in the corner above the ramp, put four or five teslas there and if gives the rants a helluva hard time.

that depends on the person, personally i think the teslas are not so useful
