Hello,
I am new to linux and have just discovered Tremulous which looks like a great game. I have downloaded tremulous-1.1.0-installer.x86.run but when I run it, I get the following message:
Could not open the file: Path/tremulous-1.1.0-installer.x86.run
gedit has not been able to detect the character coding.
Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file.
Select a character coding from the menu and try again.
currently the character coding is set to current locale (UTF-8 )
Could someone give me a hand or redirect me to a install manual? I do not know what character coding is. It is the first time I try to install an application without synaptic.
Thanks in advance!

cd to the directory the installer is in, then type this in a terminal:
sudo sh tremulous-1.1.0-installer.x86.run
(the sudo is optional, but i like to install tremulous for the whole system rather than just 1 user)

cool!
Thanks, it is installed and present in the game menu.
Now I have problems launching it...
The screen goes black for a split second and then nothing happens. I think it must be my graphic card (ATI Radeon Xpress 1100). Do I have to look for some kind of accelerator on their site?

run tremulous also in the terminal and post it's output here. It will give some information on the error.
the easy way is to run:
tremulous > outputfile
and it will save the output to a file named outputfile.
Post the contents of the outputfile.

Wild guess: MESA Indirect rendering. In that case, install ati-drivers.

Good guess man!
I got Tremulous to run and learned a lot about the console doing so. Thank you guys for your help!
Hope to see (frag?) you soon in Tremulous!
