So I know Tyrants have 400 hp. Yeah, duh. And the rifle should do a better-than-average 150 damage per clip. So I've been heatedly told by many alien advocates. However, this is a situation I'm usually faced with:
UCTBb2, that ledge outside of the far entrance into the human base makes a nice spot to take potshots at tyrants while they charge into the base. I'll usually stake up there if I've joined late and have only a rifle. Now, what usually happens is a Tyrant charges in - I fire off one clip as they speed into the turrets. I am POSITIVE all my shots hit, since first of all there are no black marks on the wall and frankly, they aren't hard to hit at that angle. So the Tyrant does his business, usually eats a turret while getting shot by 2-3 and perhaps another rifler or somesuch. Then as he makes his get away I empty ANOTHER clip into him, again not with any misses. At this poing I'm thinking he MUST be near dead so I leap off and pursue. I'll be honest and say I get in maybe half a clip due to misses before getting eaten by something. My response is usually "Errrr....what? HP?" And I've even gotten responses as high as 200.
So assuming a) they arne't lying on HP b) I can safely look at my screen and see I got in anywhere from 2-3 clips
What is happening here? Tyrants don't have any sort of armor against lower forms of weapons and the rifle DOES do 5 dmg per round, correct? I've been talking around OPP and Beer Garden lately and was surprised to hear some higher-end players share similar stories.
150 on the way in + 150 on the way out + 25~75 in pursuit means they should have only what, 75-25 hp to spend on those turrets? And yet they can take one out while most likely being hit by some other human weapon.

-You are probably not as a good a shot as you think you are
-The turrets maybe werent actaully firing at the tyrant
-The tyrant regenerated health
-
It is true that tyrants regenerate quite quickly.
Also, it's not that hard to dodge rifle shots with a tyrant, even if you are moving straight at the shooter. Also, i usually move at the turrets from an angle so that only 1 or 2 can shoot at me at the same time, and i will usually strafe- dodge my way in (slightly) so that i will reduce the amount of bullets that hit me.
And i can usually pull off before i have lost too much hp, kill any chasers and get off with some evos.
What you should listen for, is the sound: any alien makes a special sound when it's hurt beyong a set amount of hp, learn to recognize this and your chases will bear more fruit, but they might still end in your death with a goon shot to 2 hp.

hitscan + lag means that regardless of what you see, not every bullet will hit.
Apart from that tyrants heal about 12hp per second after a few seconds of being untouched.
Sounds don't always work with tyrants, as in some cases it makes the 'almost dead' sound at around 250hp.

wasn't that bug patched a while back?

1) Turrets are not that damaging to a tyrant. It takes a while for a turret to kill a marauder or an advanced basilisk.
2) Turrets have to turn to fire, a smart alien will hit the side or the turrets not facing them and move around to avoid them.
3) Lag makes people miss. Not just lag from shooting but the tyrant could be moving faster than they appear, making you miss. Your reaction time could be longer than you think, so you feel as if you got all your shots off but in reality, the first 10 or so could have missed.
4) Tyrants are bulletproof and can't be killed. They just feign death occasionally to keep the game interesting for humans.

Buy a better gun?

Solution: Stop camping and provide cover to your teammates who attack.

hey next ghost will the tyrant bug be fixed in 1.2?

You mean the "almost dead" screams at 300hp? Yeah, it's been fixed since SVN859. Tell your admin to update the server.

No, that's a layer 8 problem. There's nothing we can do about that.

Gotta love answering questions with complicated answers, relatively speaking.

fix it by using a layer 9 solution? :)

Ummmm, like.... banning the whiney noobs? Yeah, that might actually work :D

The problem is simple when you reload (took 2-3 seconds) the tyrant can regenerate health with safety.
That's why.
The best way to eliminate the tyrant is to fire at him with 2-3 guys equiped with chainguns/pulse rifles these heavy weapons are defensive. The Flamethrower, grenade, painsaw, and Luci are offensive weapons only.
Since stage 3 STICK TOGETHER!!!

rifle tyrant ...

I think the rifle only deals 50 damage per clip if I read that right.
So 2 clips is 100 dmg if all hit, and prehaps 75 from turrets, that leaves 225 health, so that seems about right.

The rifle does 5 damage per shot.
The rifle has a magazine that contains 30 rounds.
Thus, 5*30=150
I must say, though, this thread has remained remarkably civil considering that it's a complaint about not being able to kill a tyrant with a rifle.
