Post by: Mopatop on February 13, 2007, 02:49:03 pm
how come tyrants cant walk over dretches?
they look like they could.
i know they can get punted as the tyrants charges. but when u rush the humans base there are usualt dretches which block ur way out so u get killed.

this is one of the most common complaints, and hopefully some modder will fix it, the only way i see is moveing the tyrant's bb up too high to make logi cal sense, so for now, hope ff is off

tbh, i'd prefer if it just killed the dretch while not hindering the Tyrant in anyway regardless of FF it would teach dretches to use their wallwalk ability if nothing else  :)

Trampling dretches is worth it so long as you kill the human(s) you are charging at.

I wish somebody would make a mod where everytime you run over a dretch it sticks to your tyrant like velcro.  That way, I can run into turrets carrying 10 dretches with me.  That'll learn 'em.

I like the velcro idea.

Maybe if you pick up like 10 dretchs you can become a big rolling ball of death, any humans you touch die, also, the dretchs absorb the fire and fall off.

Oh yeah, and howze about the fartfire cannon XL80V2 for the humans, it requires 2 humans to operate, well, one is the cannon, the other loads, fires and lights the, um, gaseous projectile.

Savage.

with the velcro idea, the dretches could become a shield so for each dretch u trample u gain 25hp or something.
or dretch punt should be on whenever a dretch walks into a goon or tyrant.

though if the humans are S1 or 2 then they will 'very' quickly get stage ups if they flamer (or in case of them being S1, chaingun) the front of the tyrant they'll get a lot of kills

I've supported the increased Tyrant step-height for a while.
While you are at it, remove the Tyrants ability to jump, only used for making larger steps anyway.

Tyrant jump is great for taking out jettards in nexus6 who think that building on the lights outside their base will save them and their turrets.

Hmm... Just like the "harvester" pickup in Carmageddon; would the tyrant get artistic impression bonuses if it smears the dretchen into the walls?

Sometimes when I play as aliens we end up punting dretches over the turrets straight into the humans at head-height.

Title: Bounding Boxes (some technical stuff)
Post by: Sushi on March 20, 2007, 09:38:54 pm
First, lets get some things straight!

Now the reason dretches don't go under the tyrants is simple,
Most games (like tremulous) use Bounding Boxes to keep the physics simple and the frame rate nice and smooth. Bounding boxes are basically boxes that, oh well i find it hard to explain, like cover up the mesh of an object with an invisible box so it makes the physics simple to calculate

Look, see that faint trace line around the head, thats its bounding box.
Now, the box around the tyrant reaches from its head down to the bottom of its legs, so the dretches are trampled by the box (hope that makes sense)
If the box was removed, it might slow down the game completely

Well thats about all

the dretch boundary box is MASSIVE! So shooting near the dretch means you will probably hit it.

By 'anti bounding box' what do u mean?
if u mean the tyrant doesn't have a b box over its legs, then its legs would go though the ground.
think of the tyrant as a ghost, it can go though walls and the ground.
think of the b box over the tyrant as its mass (and a load of other physics things!) if the box was changed in its size, like half of its hight chopped of, say the b box over the tyrant's legs, then the b box over its upper body would pull the 'ghost' tyrant down, and because its a 'ghost' then the parts that don't have the b box over it will just go through the ground (or wall as well) Have u ever played trem with cheats on and turned 'no clip' on, 'no clip' is just your character with no bounding box applied to it, then you can float anywhere u want (like through the walls and floors), but it has no gravity because there is no b box!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope u kinda understand that!!!!!!!  :)  :D  :)

Oh my, this is getting complicated!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand bounding boxes, and now I understand that you cannot have space between the bounding box and the ground, but....IZ'm assuming all bounding boxes have to be cubic (hence the size of the dretch's), am I right? Do bounding boxes have to be cubic or rectangular? If not would it not be simple to make the bounding box of the.....nevermind, bounding boxes cannot rotate, right? (This next idea isn't going to work since bboxes cant rotate but it's worth mentioning) What if we compsed the tyrant's bbox of three bboxes? One for the upper body, one for the right pair of legs, and one for the left pair of legs?
Title: tyrants

just make the dretch noclip the tyrant and goon.

Title: tyrants
Post by: Sushi on March 23, 2007, 09:06:01 pm
good idea,  and b boxes can rotate. this is know as rigid body. B boxes can be circular and other shapes as well though, but not in the shapes we want!
oh, and just making things no clip would let dretches fly and go thru walls, not a good idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speak to u guys tommo, hav to stop now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Title: tyrants
Post by: Plague Bringer on March 23, 2007, 09:09:37 pm
I think he means that as soon as the dretch bbox comes in contact with the tyrant and goon bboxes the dretch goes noclip, and as soon as..nevermind...because there would be no bbox to judge when the dretch leaves the tyrant's bbox. Even if that did work it could be abused by letting an army of dretches grab a ride into human base an wreak havoc once the tyrant dies by the armory that just blew up.

In the clipping calculations. if you are a dretch ignore all tyrants and goons.

 :P  :P  :P
Title: tyrants
Post by: Glunnator on March 24, 2007, 05:11:39 pm
look, I know how bounding boxes work, and no, I didn't mean deleting the bbox for the tyrants legs. What I meant, was, a kind of DIFFERENT box, which would be the opposite of a bounding box.
As in:
B-Box:  :armoury:   :dretch: --Lol can't walk through
and an Anti-BBox would cancel the B-Box out.
So, put a small antibox through a b-box and that area would be pentratable.
So: (No Antibox) :armoury:  :dretch: --I is stuck!
(Antibox in middle)  :armoury:  :dretch: --LOL! I can walk through the middle!

And then putting the antibox inside the tyrant's leg-area IN BETWEEN the legs, so a dretch can't walk through its legs but it CAN walk BETWEEN them.

Also, a second option would be this: Is it possible to set that certain b-box dous not interfere with another kind of b-box?
Then we could give the tyrant 2 different b-boxes. one on it's legs and one for the rest of him. The one on it's legs is set to ignore the dretch's b-box. The difference is that a dretch, in this one, CAN walk through the legs...  :-?

would you stop that?-- :tyrant:  :dretch: --wheee!
Title: tyrants
Post by: Sushi on March 24, 2007, 06:51:04 pm

I truthfully dont think that a physics overhall just so that a dretch can go through the tyrants legs is a good investment of developer time, but by all means you can get the source code from SVN and have a go at it yourself.

It's true, I don't find getting crushed by a tyrant annoying myself, but then I don't go on the aliens team that much, anyway, dretches are so fast they could easily outrun a charging tyrant. If people tried to fix it, it might make the game slower and more glitchy.

i like the idea about dretches not clipping the tyrants and goons, but the problem is that a dretch could leap through a tyrants chest cavity aline-style (which despite being hilarious would still be kind of weird).

i was playing a game once, and a goon got stuck down the tunnels in tremor, and he couldn't get out. i was a dretch and so acted like a portable ledge, the goon leaped as high as he could and i wallclimbed to beneath him and he jumped off me out of the tunnels.

my idea is this, to make dretches easy to push around, like if a tyrant walks (not charges) into a dretch its simply pushed out of the way, this makes much more sense game-wise as there is no way that a puny little dretch can stop a 300 kilo tyrant.

perhaps even change it so that you can push ppl out of the way without shooting them (for humans)

It's possible to get out of the tunnels as a goon. At least one of the ladders has an invisible ledge on the right side you can land on. It's kind of hard to describe, but it's there.

While at it, can we try to make game more interesting by adding weak spots, like center of head of tyrant (and goon) will be x2 more vulnerable to piercing weapons (and rest of body say 20% less vulnerable to keep balance)? To reward players that can aim well, simmilar like dretches can aim for human head.

blacky this was already discussed in another thread, dont start another discussion on the same idea in another thread.

the thing i was trying to talk about was making dretches inertialess when in contact with tyrants or anything bigger than it, and that it could also apply to humans to stop people who stay on spawn points or medistations.

it shouldn't be too hard and it makes more sense

cheap hack that might do it:

raise the tyrant's box up one dretch height, then drop down a "leg" that's infinitesimally small, on the corner.

The tyrant simply does not want to squish the little dretch. Is this not the clear reason? How about we use a little teamwork and some more "DON'T F***ING BLOCK!!111eleven" messages... it keeps the players edgy and ready to kill something.
