Title: Forum Rules
Post by: Rawr on February 17, 2007, 10:36:06 pm
Is there a list of rules somewhere?
I have yet to see any, and every now and again, I see that some of my posts have been delorted.

Is there something against posting IP adresses?

bazuka, that's Internet etiquette. You NEVER post someone's IP address unless you have a really good reason.
For example, here's a bad reason:
"OMG HACK THIS IP: #.#.#.#"

Good reason:
"Admins, please ban this ip from your servers: #.#.#.# He is a griefer."

I never noticed anything about that in RFC 1855...

Pretty much this is what timbo told us (mods) to watch for:
• Spam and trollers, people posting pure advertisements, just posting to be an ass, or posting links to malicious content
 • Pornography, keep it in your pants, seriously
 • Flamewars, people saying things like "You fuckheaded fuck, get the fuck off the forums fuckhead" and the like
 • Useless posts, threads like "OMG! PANTS!" and whatnot
 • Off topic from main post. Either
• Split off into new post
 • Tell to get back on topic
 • lock[/list:o][/list:o]
On points 1, 3 and 4, you could probably ban just about anybody you liked :/ (myself included)

I believe it's an addendum to RFC 2549 (http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2549.txt)

Ironically, all IPs are constantly scanned and there are attempted hacks (scripted, viral, etc) regularly.  Posting or not posting an IP will have no affect on the safety of the system behind the IP :)

True.  But as Odin pointed out and this forum demonstrated recently, you ripen the vine for witch hunts and some scarlet letter type exposés.  Always place prudence before presumptions when posting such things.

We were told to only stick/announce a few things here and there.

Yes, but forum rules are important.
Most of them are standard, but you cant expect people to follow rules they don't know exist.

Let's add another rule:

Stop posting images that are so goddamn big they totally break the page layout.

That would be nice.
Would an automatic resize or a hard size limit be practical options?

A nonbraindead clumsy and slow forum would also make the trick. Such "layout breaking" problem has been solved for years in most forums, but for phpBB we need to use the version 3 for that.

The trick is that big images and big lines only break the layout for the post they were made in.

Hmm, dunno what it is, i even turn off all my plugins and greasemonkey scripts, but the images are resized down, with a blue dashed border.

Anyway, there is a greasemonkey script that does prevent layout breaking.
