Title: CrystalSpace3D
Post by: Kaleo on March 11, 2007, 03:25:52 am
http://www.crystalspace3d.org/main/Main_Page

Why this engine is cool:
PlaneShift (http://planeshift.it/)
CrystalCore (http://crystalcore.crystalspace3d.org/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php)
It can use BSP files (The same as the Q3 engine for those who are ignorant)
Open source

A lot of other reasons[/list]

Darkleigion Development sould make use of this engine. Not for Tremulous, but for a new game. I'm not pushing you guys, but seriously consider it...

Yeah.... Crystal Space, Ogre3D, Panda3D, Blender game engine, Doom3, darkplaces, Tenebrae, etc... There are many good 3D engines / SDKs out there, FLOSS or otherwise.

Yes, Crystal can load Q3 maps.

Still, making a decent game is non-trivial. These engines do not create game content, concepts or even much of the required code. See the Ecksdee project: http://ecksdee.sourceforge.net/wiki/wiki/Main_Page - there is a video there, one of the main developers gives a talk about the project, including some of the technicalities of using crystal to make a game.

Coming from someone who gets his info from other peoples posts, that's a lark!

I have it and the sdk, shit 3d rendering even the rendering system in 3ds max is better and i'm not talking about r9 i'm talking about r3!

If they were both designed to be photorealistic rendering systems then that would be true.
Crystalspace is supposed to render in real-time using normal 3D hardware acceleration.
Comparing Crystalspace and 3DS is like comparing Q3 to Yafray.

How good it looks depends on how good the artists are. A 100% photorealistic realtime rendering system would not compensate for poor content.

Besides, rendering isn't everything. Crystalspace gets used for realtime physics, being able to create maps and other 3D content in many different 3D tools, blah blah...

Whatever the case it's an SDK, not a "l33t 1-click game maker". Just like a tremulous map it'll look good when you make it look good.

I dont not like it because its not a game engine, I just dont like it very much.

Why would anyone want to use a piece of shit engine like Crystal Space when you have the Quake III Arena engine? That's like wanting to play NS when there is stuff like Tremulous around.
