Title: Tremded.exe Problems
Post by: soul-mine on March 12, 2007, 01:48:12 am
Hey, i followed the instructions on how to install Tjw's mod [tremded. exe, to be more in depth,] yet i still get the following problems:
Quote

Loading vm file vm/ui.qvm...
...which has vmMagic VM_MAGIC_VER2
Loading 1075 jump table targets
VM file ui compiled to 786313 bytes of code
ui loaded in 4596672 bytes on the hunk
Unknown extension for ui/menus.txt
WARNING: couldn't open music file ui/menus.txt
recursive error after: menu file not found: ui/menus.txt, using default

I know i followed the directions very carefully and i am wondering what is wrong right now. If you could help, that would be nice.

1) make sure you replaced the qvm with tjw's qvm in
C:\Documents and Settings\username\local Settings\application Data\tremulous\base\vm

2) start tremded.exe with this cmd : tremded.exe +set dedicated 2 +exec server.cfg

3) if unsure, restart from bottom in a different directory, with fresh configs in base, and clear out the C:\Documents and Settings\username\local Settings\application Data\tremulous\ directory again.

Tremded doesn't load ui.qvm. You don't run Tremded but Tremulous. And Tremulous doesn't start Tremded to host the game.

That error about menus.txt means that one of the QVMs Tremulous has loaded doesn't match its version.

If that is supposed to work, when i type in my password, the console "blue thingy says": "unknown command: /rcon. Or If ingame,it says" Bad Rcon Password." Thanks for all your help guys.

It works. Your problem is either you didn't set the rcon password in server.cfg or you didn't enter the correct password as stated in there. You don't enter the rcon command in console. When you're in console it's assumed that you have full control of the machine and you don't need rcon. Rcon is supposedly for remote connection (hence rcon).

In console,
!setlevel UnnamedPlayer 5

in-game console,
rcon pass !setlevel UnnamedPlayer 5

After that edit your admin.dat since you now have your guid in there.

Thanks for doing so much for me, sleekslacker. This is what my Server.cfg reads:
Quote
// remote control
set rconpassword "bob"      // This is the rcon password you can use to run
// server commands from within the game.

If i try any commands in game, it will still have that same message: Bad rcon password. Do i need to colour code it? Thanks.  :)

in-game console
/rcon bob !admintest

the blue console
!admintest

please change your password later, after releasing it to the public

your admin.dat lacks guid, which is why I suggested you to do !setlevel to set admin level to a player (including yourself). What you should do to populate admin.dat is define all the admin levels and flags required, and then do !setlevel on the to-be admins when they connect to your server. That should create the [admin] entry automatically with the guid.

As a start, connect to your server, !setlevel yourself ( /rcon bob !setlevel soul 5 ). it doesn't matter what your nickname at that time is. You can change that latter by editing admin.dat. The important thing is to capture the guid.

Something is messed up.. I still get that Bad Rcon Password blaring at me..  Could i have done something wrong?  D: Could the quotes be getting in the way?  I read that somewhere... :( I know i followed all the directions.. I did edit some other things inside the server.cfg.. But that doesn't relate to Rcon... Could you show me how to make the rcon be correct? Thanks.

sorry it's

\rcon bob !setlevel nickname 5.. note the slash direction.

but you should be able to enter rcon and press tab for autocompletion, and continue with the rest of the syntax.

If this doesn't work, this could only mean one thing. You're editing the rconpassword 'bob' into the wrong server.cfg (possible when you try so many times in different directories it becomes confusing which is which). AFAIK, the original files when downloaded has the password set to 'SuperUserPermission'.

Ehhh.. I only have 1 server.cfg, to my knowledge. Perhaps this will clear the case a little: When i press tab, this shows up:
Quote
Rcon
 RconAdress='.'
 RconPassword='.'
I don't get it.. But does it clarify some things? 8)

P.s. Something else showed up:
Quote
RconPassword is: '.' Default:'.'

perhaps its a READCONFIG error!
Quote
!readconfig: [level] parse error near soul-mine on line 950
!readconfig: [level] parse error near = on line 950
!readconfig: [level] parse error near Server on line 950
!readconfig: [level] parse error near Operator on line 951
!readconfig: loaded 6 levels, 2 admins, 0 bans, 0 commands

One last thought: when i do !listplayers on my blue console, it doesn't list them. We can focus on that later. I wonder whats up what rcon though.. D:

If you cannot find the place where to fix the rcon password and admin.dat, I don't think you should be administering a server honestly.
Title: uh
Post by: soul-mine on March 13, 2007, 06:08:51 am
I know where I can find them. Don't worry. How else could i have edited bob, [unfortunately it didn't work]. I am getting the nagging feeling that you didn't answer the question.. But that okay for now. I just need to know what the Rcon password default means when i press tab. I went this far. Please dont give up on me now. :(

Oh yeah, about the directories: C:\Program Files\Tremulous\base\server.cfg[rcon pass]

C:\Documents and Settings\Me\Local Settings\Application Data\Tremulous\base[admin.dat]
In reply to the last post.

Title: Tremded.exe Problems
Post by: sleekslacker on March 13, 2007, 11:34:45 pm
no don't listen to that

tremded.exe +set dedicated 2 +exec server.cfg

is correct.

find all server.cfg and change all rconpassword in it to "bob" if you don't know which one is the correct file. Also please correct / blank the admin.dat if you have syntax error and don't know where the error is.
Title: thanks
Post by: soul-mine on March 13, 2007, 11:40:31 pm
There is only 1 server.cfg (I ran the search) and ALL the passwords have been turned into bob. I deleted everything in my admin.dat as well. :)  Nice to have you back.

P.s.: When i run that command, (tremded.exe +set dedicated 2 +exec server.cfg ) only the blue console comes up. If I'm reading the script correctly, shouldn't tremded.exe also run?
Title: Tremded.exe Problems
Post by: David on March 14, 2007, 12:02:45 am
for rcon, do
/rconpassword bob
/rcon cp test

the /rcon <pass> <command> that people constantly say has never worked for me, and is an obviously flawed system, as the accidental omission of a / would result in your server being stolen.
Title: Tremded.exe Problems
Post by: sleekslacker on March 14, 2007, 12:03:06 am
The blue console is tremded.exe. It is expected that only the blue console comes up. After all it's a dedicated server.

Here's a working copy of server.cfg

Code: [Select]

set sv_hostname "My Very First Server"
set g_motd "^1Welcome to my server! ^2Play nice and don't be a jerk, please."

set g_needpass 0
set g_password ""

set sv_privatePassword "PrivatePassword"
set sv_privateClients 0

set rconpassword "bob"

set sv_maxclients 12
set sv_pure 0
set sv_allowdownload 1
set sv_minRate 3000
set sv_maxRate 25000
set sv_minsnaps 10
set sv_minping 0
set sv_maxping 250

set g_allowvote 1
set g_initialmaprotation rotation1

set timelimit 55
set g_suddenDeathTime 35
set g_teamForceBalance 1

set g_friendlyFire 1
set g_friendlyBuildableFire 0
set g_friendlyFireHumans 1
set g_friendlyFireAliens 1

set g_dretchPunt 1

set g_humanBuildPoints 150
set g_humanMaxStage 2
set g_humanStage2Threshold 20
set g_humanStage3Threshold 40

set g_alienBuildPoints 150
set g_alienMaxStage 2
set g_alienStage2Threshold 20
set g_alienStage3Threshold 40

set g_gravity 800

set g_adminNameProtect 1
set g_adminParseSay 1
set g_adminTempBan 1800
set g_privateMessages 1

map atcs

if you still couldn't use the rcon, then run tremded.exe, enter the game separately using tremulous.exe ( I hope you did this earlier ), al + tab, go to the blue console and type !setlevel yournamefromtremulousexe 5. Although I don't see why you wouldn't be allowed to run rcon in-game with the server.cfg.

It's not weird if you ask me.. must be something silly you're doing. :)

Post by: soul-mine on March 14, 2007, 12:19:54 am
Yep.. Either something is weird, but i do think that I am jacking something up.
Allow me to give you some pics:
I changed my server.cfg, but this shows up >.<
(http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l281/soul-mine/rcon.jpg)

I don't get it.. it doesn't seem like my console knows that I'm connected.

Thanks for helping out, anyway.  :)

and also, you seem to have connected to a server with playing people, which to me indicates it's not your server. The blue console showing 0 players only strengthen my suspicion. Connect to your server at 127.0.0.1 aka localhost.. try again

You should do this in-game when nobody is in the server, i.e when you setup the 'root' admin. After that you just use !setlevel somebody 3 to level him to admin status. No need to run rcon all the time. afaik rcon is mostly used with a separate rcon client which generates the rcon cmd. Assuming that the client generates correct syntax, nobody will see that "rcon bob command". This avoids the "I know your password ^^" replies.

This is your silly mistake. You setup a server at localhost. Now you want to configure that server. Why would you want to connect to some other server to configure your localhost server ? :| Servers are separate. They don't share their config. No, you will never be an admin on other servers by setting yourself as admin on your server.

that error is caused by a qvm / tremded version mismatch.
search on the error and you should get all the help you need.

It's not tremded/qvm mismatch, it's Tremulous client executable/game.qvm version mismatch.

Solution 1: Run dedicated server
Solution 2: Compile tremulous.exe from SVN and make yourself unable to play on any pre-SVN871 server.

soul-mine:

David is correct.  You need to be sure you have the correct tremded.exe and game.qvm installed, and that they are in the right places.

In order for other people to connect to your server from elsewhere on the Internet, they need your external IP address and the port your server is using.  But they can get this automatically if your server is on the master server list.  If your server is NOT talking to the master server, you still need to do some work.

I have a question for you:[list=1]

He was trying to configure (rcon, setlevel etc) his localhost server by connecting to another (Internet) server. In my experience of answering computer related technical questions, these type of people shouldn't be running any kind of server, or configure their firewall,  or install linux/freeBSD/unix.

They are the user-friendly type. 'nuff said.

  • Have you read my guide for setting up TJW's server (http://tremulous.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3586)?  It looks like you've read PART of it.  If you follow it carefully from start to finish, your server WILL work.  If your server does not work, it is very likely that you skipped or missed a step.[/list:o]If there's anything in the guide that's unclear or that you don't understand, please ask!

Moderator: might be useful to have a sticky link to the guide in this forum as well as the "Servers" forum...?  Some people
don't seem to have found it there...
Ive read it in its entirety. Tremded.exe works, and i have the latest versions, but i still can't make maps. It's fine.. Sleek told me that im a destined loser anyway...

I'm sorry!  Let's start over.  I guess I'm not entirely clear on what you're having trouble with now.  So maybe you could summarize your current situation and what's not working, and I could try to help you with that?  Sorry if I'm asking you to repeat yourself, but the thread seems to have gotten a little confused... I just figure that if you restate what you said earlier it'll clarify things and make me feel less dumb.  :)

I know you and I don't totally agree on whether and how we should encourage newbie-server-operators, but we've already talked about that, so I won't beat a dead horse.  :)  Anyway, your comment about the executable/qvm mismatch was somewhat enlightening to me, so thanks!

Please, just play on other servers. You're not knowledgeable enough to run your own server. It requires more than what you know now.

Do me a favor.  Envision a world in which people ONLY try to do things they ALREADY KNOW HOW TO DO.  We would all be crawling, drooling imbeciles, because no one would have learned to walk, talk, or read, let alone cook food, make music, or use computers.  Actually, we would probably all be dead.

If you recommend to someone that they not try to do something because they don't already know how to do it, you're basically suggesting that no one should ever learn anything new.  Because the ONLY way to learn -- in fact, the definition of "learning" -- is to pick something that "requires more than what you know now", and work to FIGURE IT OUT until you DO know enough.

Sometimes you can figure it out on your own, and sometimes you need help.  To get help, it's generally considered reasonable to (politely) ask more experienced people if they will teach you what they know, enabling you to learn more quickly.  Did you know that there are people in the world who actually teach for a living?  Yeah!  We call them "teachers", and the people who learn are called "students".  There are even organized locations where "students" can go ask questions of "teachers"!  We call those "schools"!  Amazing!

It's like we actually think this process of "learning" is IMPORTANT or something.

But here in the open-source community, and the online gaming community, we don't have "schools", and we don't have full-time "teachers".  What we DO have are "volunteers".  That would be people who know more -- like you and me -- who enjoy answering questions from people who know less.

Oops- I lie.  I said "like you and me", but apparently that should just be "like me", because you've decided you don't like answering questions any more.

Which is fine; no one's forcing you, and as a volunteer all of your time is precious.  I don't object to that at all.  What I object to is telling people to not even bother learning because they obviously don't know enough.  In my experience, the best time and place to learn is when you obviously don't know enough.  That is when people should be asking questions.

Sleekslacker, once upon a time, you didn't know very much.  And you tried to do things you didn't understand.  Maybe someone told you not to bother.  Maybe you were lucky and no one told you anything.  Or maybe you were REALLY lucky and someone helped you out.  Well, Sleekslacker, some day in the future, I guarantee that you will once again want to learn something you don't understand.  You will be frustrated.  You will be desperate.  You will beat your head against the wall.  You will ask someone for help.

And they will say:

"Please, just go play.  You're not knowledgeable enough, it requires more than what you know now.  You want what you can barely achieve.  And from my experience, you don't understand it.

I think I've said enough.

No offence."

I've tried to help. But in order for me to help him further, he needs to already have the prerequisite knowledge. I know everyone has been a noob some time, and that includes me as well.

Try asking a physicist how a cyclotron works and he will try his best to explain it to you in layman terms. But when you start to confuse too many things at once and it clashes wholely with his knowledge, he'll just tell you to 'go back and read your book son'. He can't afford to teach you from A - Z.

If he

1) followed the stickied guide
http://tremulous.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3586&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

2) made sure he cleaned up the Tremulous <user> folder

3) didn't mix qvms, servers and clients of the wrong build

it should run smoothly.

What irked me is he tried to configure his server by connecting to another server, and that tells me there is still a lot he needs to know before he can  understand server setup and administration. He will have to do a lot of troubleshooting in the future and he will be looking in all the wrong places.

Anyway I'll just shut up now. I agree with you FooBar but I still stand with what I've said.

I can see your point.  Mostly I agree with you.  I guess where we differ is...

Well, I actually AM a physicist, and up to a point I could explain how a cyclotron works.  I won't try to teach you from A-Z because, as you said, I can't afford to spend that kind of time.  And honestly I'm not at 'Z' -- I'm probably at about 'M' when it comes to understanding cyclotrons.  And I can easily bring you up to 'M' if you're at 'L', 'K', or maybe even 'J'.

But rather than say "go back and read your book son", because you're obviously not at 'J' yet, I would try to determine where you actually ARE, and then tell you where you are, and what your next step is.  That is, perhaps you think you're at 'E', but I can tell that you're at 'C'.  If I can tell you that you're at 'C', and show you how to get to 'D', that's very useful to you and it's not too difficult for me.

I guess that's basically what I was trying to say.  :)

Ok then, short list of prerequisites for running your own server:
A: ability to read
B: clicking mouse and typing on the keyboard
C: knowing the difference between directory and file
D: knowing why the program stops working when you move some important file into wrong directory - 75% of people I tell to give up utterly fail here
E: knowing how to write a plain text configuration file (no specific configuration knowledge needed) - that's another 15% down
F: being able to find out what to type in the configuration file to make the program do what you want - 5% down
G: command line basics
H: knowing how a server works in general - remaining 5% down
I: ability to solve common errors
J: networking basics - people who get beyond this point qualify to run their own server
K: ability to solve weird errors
L: ability to build your own server
