We all know the search on this forum is pants.
So, to fix this I have made a goggle Co-op search thingey.
Its a normal google search except it only searches a set list of sites.
The list is currently very short, but if people like the idea, more sites can be added, and people can volunteer to become 'contributor', and be able to edit the list. with 5-10 people maintaining it it should be able to become a valuable resource.
www.mercenariesguild.net/search
http://tremmods.sourceforge.net/tremsearch/ <--Sexy interface
http://google.com/coop/cse?cx=006737082779578233838%3Ax-bbwj96c9g
Hope you like it :)
EDIT: it looks shit but that can easily be fixed.
EDIT2: keep finding new stuff... (http://buttons.googlesyndication.com/fusion/add.gif) (http://fusion.google.com/add?moduleurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fcoop/api/006737082779578233838/cse/x-bbwj96c9g/gadget)
EDIT3: Yet more! contributors and use the google marker bookmarklet to annotate pages, adding extra tags and ensuring that the good how-to's and tutorials get near the top.
EIDT4: say who you are if you volunteer. (stick name in profile)

IDEA THEIF!
I had this premade, and was just coming to post it.
MINE HAS AJAX!
http://tremmods.sourceforge.net/tremsearch/

Assuming yours is going to be open (as in let others add url's etc.) then I don't really care which is used.
But if yours is to be used, it needs some updating.
On mine, both searching or 'tjw' or searching for 'tjw client' has how to install the client at the very top, on yours, both only have 4 hits, and none explain how to get the client.
Just a random observation.
-
Sticky please or replace the "search" with them URLs
-
Nice thingy! I likey!
-
Ha ha.
May I just say, "Pwned by an }MG{ Member once again!"
Also, David's version now searches over 130 tremulous related websites.

Edit: I'm a contributor (I added 115 pages)

Despite whatever your country's respective patent office tells you, ideas cannot be owned. They are only yours for as long as you keep them to yourself. Claiming a propriety on a concept is arrogant and indicates a fear of competition.

Don't feel sad Paradox. I appreciate your hard work. Thing is we could have discussed which solution is better first-hand before working on anything. Your announcement -> solution progression was too quick, and I can say you must have put hard effort on it to finish it that quickly.
I haven't tried any of the search engine yet and I think both can co-exist. But please be aware that in the future there's a possibility that one will become more popular than the other if its advantage is clear. If that happens, please know that your (either of you) effort for the community is very much appreciated. Things happens. We abandon a few things and move to the next one for everyone's benefit.

First off: How did he steal your idea? He posted BEFORE you, and you posted in HIS thread. David was talking about this in IRC a LONG LONG time ago. He just came around to do it today.
As far as I can tell, YOU stole HIS idea.
Secondly, your page comes up with very few relevant results, and first few show up something like 300px wide (annoying).
It's a good idea, I just think David focused more on results than the look and feel of it. I'm sure it won't be too long untill he fixes that up too.

Actually, i made one the same day the service was first offered. But it was for personal use only.
Now stop arguing about silly stuff like that
:D

Do I have to pull the car over? Cause I will! :P
I like this a lot. I haven't put it through it's paces yet but I will when I get some time and anti-lazyass pills. :)

AJAX pwns all...
-
It's not about ideas, it's about execution. Good job David, don't mind Paradox and his moaning.
(btw I had the idea for a game like trem long before timbo did!!!!!)

Actuall, earlier yesterday, i posted mullings about a search engine in a different post.
http://tremulous.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=54136#54136
And whining put aside, maby we could merge the 2 engines, using my interface, and david's collection. It is easy to do, i just need to be able to access admin on davids, then change one line of code.
-
What's the deal with the 300px search results?
They are both ugly and annoying, and in various browsers your page comes out all funky. In my FF the search box is waaay of the the right, almost coming off the page.
As far as ajax goes: I dont see the usefulness of your implementation. Maybe you could add some vivisimo-like stuff such as ajax page previews or loading up example parts of the results in a hovering iFrame.

As i posted, i am willing to delete mine and merge the two, to provide the best service to the community.
Also, i did some designs to the site to add something last night, and it borked the page, and i have yet to upload the fixed version.

Paradox:
I didn't mean to steal your thunder, had I known you had done all this work I would not have done this.
As I see it, both of us have aimed for different things. I have set mine up to provide the best search results, and include all tremulous links, while you have placed more time and effort on providing a nice interface, and integration with other tremulous related sites. I think merging the both would be a great idea, providing the best of both worlds. I think this is the code you need: 006737082779578233838:x-bbwj96c9g
-
Ok, ill delete mine. If you want to, you can use the logo i provided.
http://tremmods.sourceforge.com/tremsearch/logo.png
Also, if you want to add me as admin, my email is paradox460@gmail.com, then i could copy the text out of the indexing list and into my list on the interface
Well, they have been merged, and you can now find the interface that uses davids at the old site, http://tremmods.sourceforge.net/tremsearch/logo.png
(http://tremmods.sourceforge.net/tremsearch/logo.png)
Its a transparent PNG, so it looks like shit here, but view it.
-
Great, thanks.
Also, if people want to volunteer to help with adding site etc, that's cool. but please stick your name in your profile. Or at least PM me.
EDIT:
@people who help: all you have to do is add sites, or pages. iff all of us add the same page, then it gets a lot higher in the results, so add all the good tutorials etc you find. (we can have 5k each).
EDIT2:
also, the category's suck. if you want the list changed tell me. We can have up to sixteen that show on the google page, but unlimited on paradoxes page, (if he adds links, which apparently is doable)
-
I can, but ill need stuff.
Also, sorry bout announcing this, it was a greasemonkey script bug, i fixed it.
-
Ok nice, but its annoying. It could keep the results in english and i cant even spot an option to turn such setting on :-?

Note:
Now that Googlebot has actually indexed many of the sites we added, it's very useful, everyone should have this page in their bookmarks:

Khalsa, the interface ties right to that, and it is a bit easier to remember than http://google.com/coop/cse?fasjkhjrkhaskjfhjskh=sdfakerhjdsfnsncjhrejbfdsanfjdsafhejfnsjdhf8i23824jfbsa and so on
http://tremmods.sourceforge.net/tremsearch/

Paradox: As i've stated before. I DONT like your "interface."
Once I get some time I'll probably make one myself. If all you are worried about is the URL, here you go: www.mercenariesguild.net/search
Khalsa
Edit: Also now embedded into our mainpage: www.mercenariesguild.net (colors will be fixed)
-
How about adding a search link to the front page that is similar to MG's or maybe replace the search button at the top of the forum?
-
Forum administrators/site admins pls add a search ENGINE:)[/size]
-
Why the hell to use google for that, use your own search engine! This is free! :P

well, if you write something that rivals google for getting the right results, then sure.
