Title: good analogy
Post by: floodbud on March 28, 2007, 06:38:25 pm
Here's a good analogy:

So three airlines, a Mac airline, a Linux airline, and a Windows airline, are started.

On the Mac airline, the flight is smooth and everything, but whenever you ask a question (i.e. "Where's the bathroom?" or "how do I adjust my seat?") they just say, "It's all right, you don't need to know."

On the Windows airline, they tell you everything and the service is incredible, but in the middle of the flight, the plane stops flying and crashes into the ground, taking out an entire city block.

On the Linux airline, the only people on it are you and the pilot.  Before taking off, he hands you a bunch of metal scrap parts, some screws, a wrench, and a screwdriver, and goes into the front.  It is a bit of a bumpy road at first, but after an hour you are able to put the chair together and figure everything out, and it works exactly the way you want it without exception.  You never use another airline again, and you get so many Frequent Flyer miles that every flight after the first is free.

Ubuntu is screwy, get SUSE or something good like that. :)

Um...any distro can be what you want it to be?
If you really want choice then go with gentoo.
If you want to do little tweaking to get your hardware working right then go with an Ubuntu derivative.
If you want 64-bit then try to avoid a .deb system
If you like the BSD license then go with FreeBSD
etc...to each man/woman his/her own.
Don't just bash two distros for being like windows...

Let me give the real punch line: And then, the plane landed before you could even sit in your chair ;)

If all you can come up with to support your point is irrelevant analogies, you would do better to give up.

Please, check out the truth here (http://www.mac-sucks.com).  Though the site name may not be very official-like, the content is all completely true, so keep an open mind.

Here is the way things really are:
1st place:   Linux (okay, okay, all distros)
2nd place:  Windows
3rd place:  Vacuum-tube powered ENIAC
4th place:  TI calculator
5th place:  Pocket calculator
Dead last:  Macintosh.

hmm... why do you think so?
I'm using Debian AMD64 and I can't say a word against it. :P

If you mean problems with running 32bit apps, then it's only a matter of installing few packages and maby a bit of configuration, but in UNIX world it's nothing unusual.
I even use x86 version of trem on my x86_64 debian :D

Besides, Debian provides more packages than every other distro - when using 64bit Fedora for example, some apps just weren't available in 64bit version (in Fedora's repo) and I had to either install 32bit versions or search the net for 64bit ones.

I just get annoyed by all the problems that you have to work with on debain based systems when it comes to /usr/lib and /usr/lib32 problems with (mostly proprietary) binaries.
Title: Windows vs Linux [COMIC]
Post by: tomek-k on March 31, 2007, 01:13:21 am
right... I forgot about that. Maby because I try to avoid proprietary software
Only proprietary soft that I have installed are the NVIDIA drivers, which are in 64bit version, so they are no problem, and 32bit only flash plugin. but I don't like flash ads so the lack of 64bit flash is not a problem for me - normally I use 64bit firefox (w/o flash and anoying ads) and when I want to watch some youtube, or the like, I run a 32bit firefox with the plugin installed.

But the more 32bit-only software you need, the more anoying it gets in debian - that's true.

BTW - since a while there is wine (32bit of course) packaged for 64bit debian (it depends on sobme ia32-libs packages of course), so there are no problems with running 32bit windows apps under 64bit debian

Actually that isn't even close to the punch line.  This was orignally posted on diggs.  I tol dthe story to floodbud or whoever orignally posted it at school and he didn't quote it back right.
The true punchline is
When you tell others about the flight and how good and easy it was they just stare at you blankly and reply "Wait, what did you have to do with the chair?"  For those of you who are to dense to understand this.  It is pointing to the fact that linux is free and easy and after you get through the first couple, bolts and nuts it is a good alternative to the other expensive operating systems.  Windows and Mac both have several issues and give you less ability to tweak things to your prefrence than linux does.

Oh btw,   slackware FTW

Actually, the ending to the plane scenario as I recall it was that the Linux flight was quite enjoyable, upon landing you were asked how your flight was by your friends and told them about how great of a flight it was and that you assembled your own chair, but they all couldn't get over that you had to assemble your own chair and thought it was ridiculous.

Indeed Linux is first place
Windows is a huge virus which has bugs in it which counteract the virus, and make it work

Two negatives make a positive (and if two wrongs dont make a right, try three)

Just a blind stab in the dark, but you are a Windows user, Right?
