Title: Best BB software
Post by: Paradox on April 09, 2007, 05:26:20 pm
Ok, what is the best BB software, for running a forums. I know of several, they are:
Free ones:
Cost ones:
There are likely several more, so if you know of one, post it and ill add it to the list.

Frankly, i choose vBulletin for the buy one, and MyBB for the free one. vB is more powerful than IPB, and has a cleaner interface and code. It is also easier to manage and moderate, and has more control over what you can let members do (setting it to only allow images after X posts, allow bbcode after X posts, user specific permissions, group based permissions, time based permissions, posting within X hour and X hour). It is easier to mod, and has a very easy template system to modify. You can add drop down gamercard display on user posts via 5 lines of code. vB's ajax is a lot cleaner than IPB, and seems to appear only where it is needed (on quick reply, quick edit, quick quotes, moderation, administration) and not where it isnt (profiles). Finally the price is cheaper than IPB, $165 for a permanent licence with 2 years of updates, vs $200 for perm ipb licence with 1 year upgrades.

As for the free one, i choose MyBB, because it is almost an exact clone of vB, missing a few features, but still very good. It has quick edit, quick quote, quick reply, similar admin features, and is much more secure than phpBB.

Thats just my 2 cents. What do you guys think?

I have tried SMF, and thought it a glorified phpBB.

I've used all of those listed and more, and admined almost all of them in various places.

I find that every site has it's particular user base and intended usage but for the most part SMF or something like vanilla works best.

SMF is not a glorified phpbb (though it can be argued it is a glorified yabb2se gold) and is much better than most.

IPB is good if you want to use it in a corporate venture with support contracts and whatnot (VB support sucks) and you need it for a large userbase.

I dream of the day I stop being so lazy and get a SMF theme made for the Trem.net forums.

What i really want is a new forums, that behaves exactly like a forums should, like phpBB, but all ajax where it is needed. Ajax quickreply list, ajax new replys, ajax forums view so new ones pop to the top, ajax Digg spy like feature (vbIspy plugin for vB does this), drag and drop quoting, pm system that behaves like desktop email, etc.

Among the open-scripts one, I have used both phpBB3 and SMF. phpBB3 always takes the lead. It has got more mods, themes etc. On the other hand, SMF doesn’t give you much features as compared to phpBB3.
