One thing that I've heard a lot of complaints about from people new to Tremulous (especially from NS people) is that Tremulous isn't very "newb friendly." I can see where they are coming from... The current manual isn't detailed enough, and Trem players aren't the most forgiving online community (although we're much better than some). Moreover, newbs can hurt their own team much more than in some other games (crazy feeding, bad building, etc.), which causes newbs to be kicked more often, which leads to them leaving the game and/or possibly whining on the forums. Which we don't want.
Which leads me to my idea. I believe most of us don't mind helping newbs, but we're not always sure if someone is a newb, and moreover a newb willing to take the time to listen to what an experienced player has to say. I propose that we designate a tag to go in front of the newb's name that will designate him or her as a newb that's willing to learn. Something like (NWL). With this tag, it will be clear to everyone that they are newbs, which would be good on several levels. We can help the newbs that aren't noobs- newbs that are willing to admit they're new and want to learn. We don't have to worry about being cruel to people who act like idiots but might be newbs. If one side has a bunch of newbs for the purpose of this example, humans), the few experienced players don't have to, when the aliens dominate, shout things like "OUR TEAM HAD LIKE SOOO MANY NOOBS!!!" that lead to newbs feeling bad and possibly leaving the game.
Foreseeable problems:
1. Implementation. How do we get newbs to use this tag? Two things that come up in my mind right away are: people telling them and servers putting it on their loading screen. However, people telling newbs is slow and inefficient, and server hosters probably don't want to put a message on their loading screen.
2. Griefers pretending to be NWLs. Not sure how to prevent this.
3. I'm wrong and people hate newbs (not noobs, newbs). Then don't implement this idea.
Thoughts?

There have been attempts to fix this, mainly with community driven resources.
An incomplete list or resources. (http://dretchstorm.com/node/580)

Let other whine all they want, especially NS. NS community whines bitches moans and comlains about Tremulous being a rip, some Gloom players even bitch about "Tremulous being some NS ripoff on the quake engine". I'm here, you're here, everyone else is here, we've got the hang of the game, if other people cant get it, who cares. Let them get the hang of it on their own, let them leave, whatever. If they put in the effort to make a forum account, yeah, we'll help them, but ingame - no. I'm not spending valuable time explaining how to vote, make binds, or color your name. I found out on my own, why cant they?

While I understand that helping newbs can be annoying, I'd rather spend a second instructing them and have them become an active player than belittle them and have them leave the game. Tremulous has a solid player base, but not so solid that it wouldn't benefit from more players.

Nice idea, really good intentions.
I don't have a problem answering questions. I haven't seen people kick beginners for being ignorant. I haven't see a beginner not get a question answered. I think NS players are just trying to be antagonistic because NS has jumped the shark.
I have seen people get kicked for not listening. There is big difference. If I take the time to explain and show people stuff, and they continue to do dumb things....they can leave.
A lot of 'experienced' players are guilty of not listening as well. They set a bad example. If I could have it my way, I would painsaw defend the base and use the flamer 24/7. But I know as soon as I get some kills, everyone will be doing it.
Tremulous needs a training server that runs ATCS 24/7 and let beginners learn there. Call it 'Training Grounds-Beginners Welcome'.

That's a good idea. Should be run by }MG{, they're good people.
IMO.

True. When I first thought of this, I ruled out forums as a way of helping newbs on the grounds that newbs might be hesitant to use the forums or not even know of its existence. However, upon further contemplation, I realize:
1. Newbs are probably just as likely to know about (NWL) as about the forums.
2. If the newb has already gone through the trouble of finding Tremulous and downloading it, they are probably more computer literate (and thus, more aware of forums) than if Tremulous was a commercial game and they had bought it in the store.
Forums are a better method of newb helping than I originally gave them credit for. They still don't identify a newb within the game, but I will admit I underestimated them.

Yeah, I agree completely. You could put the (NWL) message on this server if the idea caught on. The problem would be keeping it populated.

g_newbieNaming 1
g_newbieNamePrefix "(NWL)UnnamedPlayer"
Use that on the server for noobs...

i like this idea of tagging new players, is there any way we can make it automatic for any i.p that has been playing for less than two weeks?
it would also be nice if there are dedicated newb servers for the purpose of educating new players, if some decent players could just spectate and moderate the game then we could eliminate people who charge tyrants naked, or try to blaster a goon
-
I will help newbs and coach them if I meet them, I met a guy called Grim yesterday and I told him about the game and how to play basically, Im no killing machine God, but I know stuff.

There are actually a few atcs 24/7 servers though they aren't called that.

and they arn't dedicated noob training servers either, even if some of the experienced players were to make an introductory video, if people are willing to help im willing to make and edit the video

I am running a Trem Skills programme on my gaming blog. Which would certainly be of interest to help educate and old players of Tremulous on how to play better.]
