Title: Problems with OpenGL under Windows? - read before asking!
Post by: tomek-k on April 11, 2007, 08:56:00 pm
If you get this error:
Code: [Select]
GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem
and you use Windows, then do the following:

Step 1. Make sure your graphics hardware supports OpenGL in accelerated mode
Step 2. if you are sure that it does, then install the newest graphics drivers from your graphics hardware vendor - the drivers that come with Windows are not enough, because they do not support OpenGL (Windows provides only 'software mode' OpenGL library - that opengl32.dll, which is not a graphics driver).

Post a new thread only if after doing the above you still get the error.

To admins:
Please stick it!

Actually this is already in the stickied FAQ.

yeah, but two problems - it seems like not everyone is looking into the FAQ and if they would see the topic on the top of the list maby they'd have read it. Besides that mention in FAQ doesn't actually say that the drivers that come with Windows are bad, and some people just don't know that (maby they just think that this OpenGL error is Trem's fault and they just ask on the forum).

Just add some hack that prints some help besides that error

Even if this WHOLE SECTION had only "Can't load OpenGL subsystem" threads on the first page, noobs who don't read FAQ would post another one anyway.

This forum should take Czech Travian (real-time web strategy game) forums as example. When somebody ask a question which has been answered in the FAQ there, the discussion looks like this:

Thread starter: Question which has been answered before
Poster #1: FAQ
Poster #2: FAQ
Poster #3: FAQ
Moderator: Read the FAQ. Locked.

yeah, maby you're right, maby it's not worth doing anything for that noobs who want their computer to work w/o any effort from their side...
but what I don't like about all this is that they will think that the Trem has some bugs, while the only problem is their ignorance...
