Title: how does 1337ness work?
Post by: Lord Baxter on April 16, 2007, 11:13:40 am
how is 1337ness measured on this forum? is it the amount of time someone has been on the forums or is it some other thing (like percentage of posts, or average posts per day)?

The numero di posteros you have doenemundo.

Check up with that little post counter under your name.

I think its something lkike:

0 = Non-l33t
50 = appreciably-l33t
70 or 100 = quasi-leet
300 = impressivly 1337
500 = uber l33t

But thats just a rough observation.
Among people however, it is contribution to the forums, and how much they respect you. But I dont think that was what you were on about.

When you register on the forums the :overmind: establishes a psychic link with your subconscious mind. Through this link it examines the very essence of your soul and decides how l33t you are, then commands a :dretch: to log in to the forum server and update your l33tness rating.

Bad, bad, bad way to measure 133tness.  I think the designated forum moderators and admins should personally choose your l33t level by deciding how good your posts are.  Otherwise, people can post-spam (like spamming all threads with a link to the forum search engine) or something like that.  If the admins took care of it, then you would know how much to trust someone, whereas the current system means absolutely nothing.

Not that I would be benefited by it.

What we need is a karma like system, where people with 100+ posts can vote +/- on peoples posts, and the votes of people with good karma count for more, like with google and page rank.

David's idea is good, but I'll try improving his suggestion with a little more additions. We could also use the karma like system to to avoid people who have nothing to say from posting 3 word posts which IMO is also considered as spam.

There is a message behind that. I was leaving it to you to infer that message. Anyone with a brain could figure out that I really liked David's idea and agreed that something like that should be implimented. You didn't add any ideas onto David's suggestion, you simpily stated that three word posts would be marked lowly, something of general knowledge and common sense. Your post was spam, there was no bulk to it, and I believe you only created it to flame me.

I type enough paragraphs for English, can't I slack off a bit when it comes to a freaking forum?

You have a point, Bringer.  That said, lets back down.

don't look at the dude's post count. look at the substance of the post.

0? 2? 4? 8? 16? ...? Surely, to be truly l33t, a forum count must be in base 3!

Bugs me when people do that.  I don't think karma is a good idea, guys could team up and make a bunch of accounts, and forcibly vote someone up.  If the forum moderators have time, I think they should do it.  I have a lot of respect for them and the things they do.
