Title: Great Idea for Map!
Post by: Evlesoa on April 17, 2007, 04:02:21 am
(http://www.krahs-emag.com/images/wallpapers/halo2/halo2_diss.jpg)

Making a map thats like a ring, or atleast the halo landscape, with aliens, would be a great idea... be a planet like Ancients, but less of the blockade, make it like the beginning map, where you crashed and you are on there, where you see the water, or you can be in the ice place... if you played the game, you know what i mean... and I mean halo ONE not, halo 2... Or even making it like the halo mothership, and mothership i mean before they get evacuated to the halo ring, but the actual thing that is getting beat down by covenant plasma and they shoot out of the escape pods... w/e the point is, play the fucking game and make a kickass map like this...

Have a nice day, flame me, and watch you suffocate the next day by my invisible hands and thoughts...

k thx bye

If you actually want to be able to walk around the ring in 1 map, you would have to make changes to the game engine so you could specify the direction of gravity in different sections.  Also need to address vis issues if you make a ring of any significant size.  Would need to create a skybox that would mask the vis separation.

Without engine changes the tremulous world is flat.

I own a copy of the The Ringworld Engineers. It was a fine piece of science fiction, but took a long time to read through.

A ringworld would be just a handful of technical problems to map.

A ringworld, as in a strcutre 1 million miles across and the orbit of the earth in diameter? Do you know how fucking long that would take to walk around? Louis Wu only walked on about a 128th of the whole ring, and it spanned, what, 6 books. I have met Niven before in person, and he says that the novels will continue, so it will soon fill 7.
The ringworld is so fucking huge, here are some nerd stats i gleaned from Niven:
Mass: 2x10exp30 grams
Radius: .95x10exp8 miles
Circumference: 6x10exp8 miles
Width: .997x10exp6 miles
Surface area: 6x10exp14 square miles= 3 million times the area of the earth.
Even if most of the map were made up of nonaccessable area, the map file would be huge, and it would require a shitload of teleporters for the service stacks.

who the hell did your scientific notation

it goes x.yz*10^t

not .xyz*10^t

but yeah thats pretty big. and useless. my comment about this map:

OMFG TODAY I PLAYED HELO KITTY AND OMFG. WE NEED A FREAKING HELLO KITTY MAP BECAUSE ITS JUSGT SO  GOOD. GO PLAY THE GAME AND FIGURE OUT WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT. OMFG
MAKE IT IMEDIATELY!!

Maybe he isnt making it to scale?

If he did then I present to you:

T R E M U L O U S
The MMORPG

Fight Monsters!
Eat Humans!
Roar at them!
Shout at Them!
Run around!
Make a Base!
Defend your Base!
Attack their Base!
Go on a KSpree!

But whatever you do:
Don't Eat The Yellow Snow!

Except, ya know, ringworld was published in what, 1972? Halo is a tiny ring that orbits a gas giant. Ringworld is a huge ring that has a diameter the size of THE ORBIT of earth.

I'd like to see a map built using jumppads as the main form of transportation.

you don't have to change gravity or the engineering on this map.  Couldn't you cheat and make it flat and then just make it teleport at the end to the other end.  It would seem weird but it could work.  Also elvosa wasn't saying the whole ring.  He was saying like on the ship or just the start part with the water ect.

Why couldnt it be a ring?? What you cant make a flat surface seem like its a ring with the effect? And the gravity wouldnt have to be changed... all it is, is basically a Surface that goes like _ then - and then higher like ^ like an edge, or a wall... a wall doesnt go | it goes from _-| or _| so you could make a box, but you cant make a ring? thats retarded rofl... i think you could... or atleast the effect of the ring

you could make it sloped but it would have to be based off of teleporting unless you wanted to utter changes to the trem gravity engine.  Instead of one point of gravity you would have to have one every few degrees.  Making it from platforms would make the smoothness almost impossible and it would still have to be based off of teleports.  Getting them placed ride and making sure you don't lag into them to ruin smoothness would be near to impossible.  I don't know a lot about coding but I know building a ring like that is not an easy task.  I have worked with gamemaker and it has a nice simple graphics engine.  Normally you only have 1 point of gravity down.  You can change where the pull is coming from but instead of all around it being pulled to it in a circle type gravity like the sun its like its a giant flat object directly below where your pulled to.  That way you don't get pulled left when running right.  Only down.  Tremulous appears to run off the simple standard gravity coding and instead of it being like that for a ring it would have to be changed to several circular points of force for gravity.  Way to much hassle for one stinking map.  If the whole game was based on the ring then that would be one thing.  But for maps not worth it.
