Title: Screen blanks / display freeze
Post by: KoS on April 05, 2006, 10:00:59 pm
Hi!

I have a quite strange graphical problem playing Tremulous.

If I set up High or Normal quality (Options->System), quite often all moving objects vanish and the display freezes. This means that the map objects stay where they are but all players and most of the structures vanish from the display and also display freezes so no display reaction on moving.
Although if I press Esc (brings up the menu) then everything gets back and another Esc (removes the menu) still everything OK for a while... then it happens again.

If I set up Fast or VeryFast Quality, then quite often the screen blanks (black screen). The Esc brings back everything, another Esc still ok, I can continue to play or observe... then it happens again.

It takes maximally 5 minutes for these things to happen (the difference is only the method of the problem), but the "frequency" vary from 1 min to 5 min.

I checked if it is my window manager, but both under Fluxbox and Gnome it happens.

One very interesting thing is that the method of the problem only depends on the starting quality. This means that if I set up Fast quality, and then I change the sub settings to be the same as for High quality, the screen still blanks (az for Fast quality) and not freezes as if it should if I set up High quality.

My system:
Linux: Arch Linux
Kernel: 2.6.15-ARCH
Graphics card: nVidia GeForce FX 5200
Driver: 1.0-8178
X: Xorg X Window System Version 7.0.0
xorg.conf relevant part:
Section "Device"
        Identifier  "Card0"
        Driver      "nvidia"
        VendorName  "nVidia Corporation"
        BoardName   "NV34 [GeForce FX 5200]"
EndSection

If I can provide any other informations, please tell me.

It looks like nobody else encountered my problem...

If someone is playing the game under Linux with an nVidia card, can you please tell me which version of the nvidia driver are you using?

Thanks in advance...

I have a 6600 go graphic card and xorg 6.8 and I do not have the problem you are facing. It's a Gentoo system with the same nvidia drivers, 1.0.8178.
There are newer nvidia drivers out there, they might help.

maybe theres some other program running while playing that might be interfering with it...tremulous does suck up a lot of memory and usage from ur pc... other than that i dont even have a video card on my laptop... just have the basic intel (r) that came on it and the video is fine for me even on high...

Thank you dekki, and [EVIL]Unknown for your response!!

I have updated the nvidia driver as dekki suggested (1.0.8756), and the problem is _gone_, so it looks like it was a driver problem. :)
There are still some segfaults occasionally, but hopefully they will vanish as program improves.

Those drivers are ancient man ... I always upgrade my drivers ASAP whenever possible (assuming it doesn't break anything)

The driver 1.0-8756 is the latest for Linux.
When dekki told me that there is a newer driver, that was the day when the newer driver was released.
I also always use the latest driver when it doesn't brake anything...
