I have been doing research into dedicated server's trying to see what classifies as one.
The reason is because im almost finished building my new pc and was thinking about trying to update the older one to be a dedicated server for a server , forums and teamspeak for some lucky clan or whoever.
P4 2.8 ghz
160 gig drive
1 gig RAM
Im looking into running windows server 2003 but ill get to that when the time is needed.

Nice man :)
I would like a server :)

I've always been here I just didn't post where it wasn't necessary :)
Anywayz lets not get off-topic or we'll ruin rabbitt's post.
Also Rabbitt..you seemed you needed some help or advice on the server 'cause your posts seems that you want to tell us something not we tell you something or maybe thats just me.

that hardware is more than enough to run all that stuff on (assuming you have the connection for it), but i would recommend some *nix instead of win2k3 (unless you have experience with windows server 2k3) because it's much more painless to set up a trem server. you would need httpd and mysqld (or whatever you end up using), niced to at least 10 to avoid locking up your server for 5 seconds every time someone accesses the page though.
-
So all i need to do is get a server os and install what programs i want and it will then be a dedicated ?
Kobra and Nitrox jacking my thread like bandits.

For a safe and free linux distro which makes a good server i suggest Adamtix, EnGuarde Secure linux, freespire, QiLinux and trustix.
for more check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions

:P My apologies.

eww, freespire? (i'm sure i could come up with good complaints about the others if i had ever heard of them). debian makes a more than decent server OS.
-
Freespire is easy to use. All I have to say.
Most of the distros mention were developed for security.
Ubuntu and SLED are also good.
-
Ok so once again all i need to do is wipe everything on it format it install a server os then install trem programs and boom its done ??
-
No.
Installing Linux is easy. (ish)
If its debian or whatever, install a good web server and whatever else is also easy.
However it will fail miserably if you cant maintain it, and if you've never used *nix before, you will fail miserably.
-
So coul;d i run it on a regular os like xp or red hat ?
-
not really, there are a lot of tasks that a server needs to perform so its best to have an OS that is designed for use in servers, windows XP cant run a server (so i think) its possible on mac OS (i think).
i dont know much as much about computers as these guys (but im learning atm :) )
Edit: removed stupid words (didnt know linux and unix were basically the same... :-? )
-
Thanks lord for the help.
OK so im pretty sure i can do this.
Im just worried about the thing being too much to handle at first.

Just drop any linux distro (even Ubuntu) on an old crusty machine. There are many docs and howtos on the net for setting up just about any game as a dedicated server on linux - as most every game has a linux binary for it (even for win only clients).
You will get far more greater bang for the buck on old hardware with linux as a dedicated server for anything - from ftp server to a game host. If you used Xubuntu for example, you would still have a minimal GUI and plenty of resources left over for running all kinds of dedicated server applications.
What's the old computer specs? I thought the one you listed above was the new one you are putting together. If I misunderstood, then what you listed could easily run Ubuntu (or Kubuntu), it's 100% free, there's a wealth of docs out there, and you would join the many hordes of server admins already using linux for everything.
-
The specs are the old one lol.
My newest creation is a 3.2 with 2 gig ram and 1.5 terrabyte hd

I love XFCE. it kicks gnomes arse into next year.
Also, what ever distro you use, disable X at boot, it will just eat ram that could be used elsewhere. When (if) you need it you can login at the text prompt, and do startx to get it back, or you could even add it to bashrc so it runs when you log in.
Although I can see no reason why you would need a nice flashy desktop, I routinely have my desktop with just a few terminals open, which seems kind of wasteful...
