I've downloaded Tremulous, but when I click on it to open the client, a blue window appears. Then my computer goes black screen (like it should when it opens the client). After that, here is where the problem is. Then, the blue window reappears and at the top, flashing red, it says:
GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem
What's going on? How can I fix this?
-
Q: I get the error 'GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem' when I try to run Tremulous!
A: This error is caused by the game not being able to detect your Open GL drivers for your graphics card. There are two things you can try to resolve this issue:
-If you are using your vendors graphic card drivers (i.e. Asus, Abit), try using your manufacturer's graphic card drivers (i.e. ATI, Nvidia)
-If you are using the manufacturer's graphic card drivers, try using the vendors card drivers.
-If the above steps fail, try uninstalling your graphic card drivers completely, rebooting, then reinstalling the latest set of drivers, rebooting a second time, and trying to run Tremulous again.
Note: ATI's Windows Vista Beta 2 drivers DO NOT INCLUDE OPEN GL. There is currently no known work around until ATI updates their drivers with open gl support.

Oh ok thanks......all the graphics card stuff sounds too complicated.
I'll just pass on this game.

HAHAHAHA!!!!
we've just lived to times when installing a graphics driver under the most simple operating system ever is too complicated to an average user.
And Microsoft's policy has finally succeded in preventing the spread of alternative technologies on their platform. :)
Guys. I think that as of now it makes no sense to support the Windows platform - it seems that an average Windows user just doesn't give a fuck about OpenGL games. :D
-
How much did you spend on your computer?
How much of that was for the graphics card?
Don't you want to use what you paid for?
If you brought a keyboard with a load of cool media keys, plugged it in and found the media keys wouldn't work with out the drivers, would you just think 'well I paid extra for them, but meh, too much effort'.

But David, the problem is that OpenGL games are in minority in the Windows world. And unless one pays for an OGL game (eg. Quake), I bet that in most cases he won't bother.
Just look how many people who reported the famous OpenGL "bug" have a post count = 1. That means something. There are many more that haven't even bothered to look at the forum.
and btw:
all the graphics card stuff sounds too complicated
he is right - it really is written in a complicated way. Even on the Quake support site this is explained more clearly.
But don't know, maby it was the FAQ writer's intention to scare off people who know nothing about the OS they use.
But, as I wrote somewhere before - it's not my business. I don't use Windows. :P
PS. The subject of this thread is formulated very well - there certainly is something wrong... (not with anything related to Tremulous, of course)

The forum should include a message that goes over top of everything and follows you down the page that says "READ THE FAQ FIRST" and supplies a link because it seems searching is even too complicated for Windows users.

Or better, the "New topic" button in Troubleshooting section should display FAQ and the textboxes for new topic should be at the bottom of the page.

+1
it would finally make people read the FAQ, hopefully. OR they would just scroll past it :)

Convenient, a recent thread on this topic.
At the loss of my iBook, I'm trying to install Trem on my neglected home computer, and I'm getting the same problem. I looked at the FAQ first, but as someone said earlier, it's pretty vague to someone who knows nothing about their PC. Can anyone give me a more in-depth, dumbass-oriented explanation, please?

Been there, done that.
J/K, I don't like media keys anyway.

The answer is: install the graphics drivers.
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
for nVidia or ATI based graphics devices, respectively.
For Intel, look at http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Default.aspx
For Matrox - at http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/corpo/support/drivers/home.php
find the driver you need, download it and then just DOUBLE-CLICK (or single-click if you prefer)!
You probably will have to restart the computer after the whole operation.
Yes, it IS as simple as installing a dumbest shit you can download from the internet...
MAN...

Yeah, if you're running Windows, it's no tougher than double clicking on the .exe...
Is it okay that I feel sad about the current state of computing? I get down on myself for not knowing enough assembly sometimes, but then I remember there's people out there who still think the icons on their desktop are the programs themselves.
Then I feel better about myself.

phew, you scared the crap out of me :D

Hm, I should've known better than to actually ask people on the internet for help, lol. First they'll give you the same instructions that've already been said, then they'll insult you for it.
The problem was that I didn't know what my current driver was, or how to find out, smartass. I did find out, though, while I was trying to get a different game to work. So if anyone else is searching the forum for this problem, go to Start -> Run and type "dxdiag". Then go to the Display tab and your graphics card and current driver should be listed. From there you can look on the site of your card manufacturer (probably one of the ones David listed) and see if there's any updated drivers for your card.

desktop is a folder noob
Yes, but do you want all that shit on your desktop?
And my desktop isn't, I don't have one ATM, but when I did it was a XML file.

Hmm... sorry, but your initial question wasn't precise enough so that one could get your point. You didn't write what you would like us to explain.
Besides, you wanted a "dumbass-oriented explanation" and you got it.
