Title: aliens and cg_thirdPerson
Post by: tjw on April 14, 2006, 03:34:56 am
I would like to see cg_thirdPerson available to the alien team.  What I'm envisioning is a menu option for third person view with the options:

Never
Always
Wallwalking Only

I turned on sv_cheats with a few players the other day to try it out and at the very least it made wall walking much more tolerable.

Since aliens don't have crosshairs it's no disadvantage.  I guess the only advantage (in the sv_cheats sense) is that they can see around corners a bit, but hey they have radar anyway right?

I take it back partially.  I tried this again and it is pretty annoying with the larger models.  Perhaps just for Dretch/Advanced Granger/Basilsk?  Or change the view position or limit z axis for the larger aliens?

Could you give a reason to why this would be necessary?
It would be fun, but that's all i can think of.

Mostly it just makes wallwalking easier (for me at least).  I often get very disoriented when going from one surface to another.  Seeing the orientation of my player model in relation to the surface I'm walking on helps me out a great deal.   It may not be for everyone so if it is added it should be configurable.

Yeah I agree. Third person would definitely be fun for aliens and I think should make controlling dretches a lot easier particularly on wall-climbing. I think some players might find this imbalancing though so I suggest that server admins should be able to control whether it is allowed or not with an svar_allowthirdperson like they do in the battlefield games.

I also think that it should simply be a key that toggels between third-person and first person. Again, like how it is in battlefield.

third Person view = cheating, you can look whats behind a corner

I cant really imagine how looking around a corer would be extremely helpful to someone in trem... its not like knowing what is around the corner makes it easier to attack, expecially if your something that can wallwalk anyway.

yeah, it only works for smaller aliens that can wallwalk, from marauders and up its a nuisance as it makes it hard to aim.

Radar only works to a point - its no good down long corridors, and crucially it doesnt tell you which way players or turrets are facing. If you always knew when a human was looking the other way, and so you could approach safely, thats a serious issue.

I say no to third person - wallwalking is fine if you spend a bit of time practising it.

I was thinking we could just make the game 2D from an overhead view. Could be fun, but you could probably use it to cheat to see around corners. ;)

I have a idea about 5th dimensions.

The players sould be attached to a dimension, and have a item to toggle dimension.

Maybe the alien team start on one dimension, and the human team on other.

This way the map magically double the size, and the human base and alien base can use the exact same area.

A restriction can be: you can't change dimension near a human/alien structure.

Are you sure you want a 5th dimension ? Go there : http://www.astrolog.org/labyrnth/daedalus.htm download the labyrinth generator/player and play a little in the 4D labyrinth ;) And if you think it's still too easy, go for the 5D labyrinth.

PS : SLAVE|Mietz, your location messes up the forum layout ! We know that phpBB sucks so no need to prove it again by annoying the users :)

Zip the contents of the 'self extracting zip file' and upload it somewhere plz.
I will probably be able to wine the program, but not the extractor, it seems.

You should be able to use unzip on a self extrating .exe made with zip ;)

SLAVE|Mietz : your location looks right here too but the left part of the forum with the names is twice the horizontal size because of it :) This is with a recent version of Mozilla.

I tell you the unzip command line utility can be used to unpack the .exe file and I really mean it because I've tested it right now. Anyway, you can get the file you asked here :

3rd person would be a definite help...it also seems practical...but it would throw off the balance of the game (or what exists of a balance); dretching would be way, way, easier, and it would be very easy to dodge luci's no matter what alien you pick.

I want to test this, but i can't get the sv_cheats thing working..
I set sv_cheats 1 in my server.cfg and at the menu, it's turned on, but when i start my own server it's off?

I think you also need to start the game with the devmap command and not the map command.

yeah, devmap is basically the same as /map but with cheats and stuff enabled for testing.

Ooh, i love it!
It isn't 100% useable out of the box though, it will need a few patches :)
