i read that topic but still dont understand. i just got a new computer, and am new to mac (was using windows before), and have no idea where the heck the tremulous base folder is.
edit: ok, i see the base folder in something that is named "Tremulous-20060704.dmg" but it says i cant modify that folder when i try to drag something in.
edit: i think i found the base folder, and when i am checking the server list, the new map pics show up, but when i click on a server with that map, trem just quits. wtf do i need to do?

Thank god we have another Mac user! Welcome to the club!http://tremulous.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4811&highlight=mac
Anyway. The folder you are looking for is located in ~/Library/Application Support/Tremulous/Base
Edit: I noticed that the ~ doesn't look like a tilde in the code box, just live with it, though. It's the thing that looks like a -
Basically, the Tilde (~) = Your Home Folder.
For example, if your home folder was called Equilibrium, then your path would look like
Equilibrium/Library/Application Support/Tremulous/Base
As you play Tremulous and download mods, your ~/Library/Application Support/Tremulous/ will get cluttered with various folders representing the mods. For example, I have folder called Relic, Risujin, Base, Base2, Base3, Base4, Base5, Balance, TremX and more.
Since you have multiple autogen.cfg's and multiple autoexec.cfg's in each of these folders, you might find it convenient to copy all of these files between folders. One last word of advice. You only put your map files in the ~/Library/Application Support/Tremulous/Base folder, the other folders read the maps out of there.

look at my signature. lawl

TinMan, I for one recognized your signature for what it is, however you could put a caption for new users (I'm kinda kidding, but kinda not...)
-
.dmg is a disk image
that's the Trem download
stuff you want is in Trem base or Applications Support Library
I use autodownload
'cuz sometimes I get maps
and it's not as straightforward as I thought it would be
check out the Spotlight feature
it's occasionally helpful
What kind of Mac did you get Equi?
And welcome to the club.
-
i think i got it to work now. thnks all for your help.
@player1: it's a macbook pro. i dont know much about comps, but i am pretty much the first one to join in-game, so it must be pretty fast. i got this for college, cuz i will be going to college in the fall.
-
You should probably be copying the entire contents of the disk image to a Tremulous folder in Applications. Although you can often play from the dmg, it's not a good idea on the whole because as you've found out the volume is read only.

@Equi: one of the new ones? (post specs so I can be truly envious) :P
they're screaming
nice
using the trackpad?
majoring in art or design?
let me know if you find a good chat client
or if you configure iChat for teemspeex
haven't messed with either yet
except to inquire about it herein

*AdimX, built on Purple (Gaim) libraries. It's tied with gaim for a good all-around client in my book.

ok, first off, i am not comp savvy. so what i remember is basically 2gb memory and 120 gb harddrive (ya that's all i remember).
uh, no trackpad for me. i like mice.
i'm majoring in architecture.
uh, i DLed teamspeex for the heck of it, but i don't have a mic, and i probably wont use it unless i join another clan.
and, i don't like chatting programs. i can chat in-game. that's good enough for me.
-
actually, if you have one of the new MacBook Pros, there is a mic built-in, next to the iSight camera (those two tiny dots on either side of the 1/4" square lens, iirc)
it should come loaded with iChat and a bunch of AV stuff
Photo Booth, iPhoto, Preview, etc.
the usual OSX iLife stuff
it's weird being online with a camera pointed at yourself at all times
I prefer to have the laptop closed and use the external monitor for Trem
(and private browsing) :P
the computer I had before this MacBook was really cheesy: PII350MHz 4Gig HD
btw Equi, the Apple symbol is the place for system info, software revision info, software updates & etc.
I bought the extended care program, and I recommend it, because they're making 'em so fast right now they're gonna make some lemons
tell your parents it's the prudent thing to do
then get an external hard drive and a MacMini and back up EVERYTHING!
the Mini is only another $600 & when the laptop is buggered, you'll still have your files and your assignments and your schedule and your music and a copy of Trem
architecture is hard
without the laptop you'll be screwed
get a cheap backup like a Mini
and some external peripherals (monitor, mouse, keyboard)
save your back and your eyes
and get a $150 hard drive for files
information on external hard drive
programs/applications on computers
how much are you gonna have to spend for CAD programs?
and if you're running anything 3D
stay away from Parallels
and be happy you bought the Pro
also, cache stuffed with game artifacts will slow down
memory-intensive programs for rendering and such
me not very computer savvy either
but the 21st century sure did creep up and bite me right in the ass...

whoa, thats lots of stuff you wrote. i have just one question. how do i get the mic to work with teamspeex?

You need to check the TS preferences (In the TeamSpeex dropdown menu) and if you want to plug in a mic, you'll need an iMic, which is a USB mic adapter.

@Anger: Cool. What apps are you running? Do you also use BootCamp or Parallels (or have you)?
@Equi: Yeah, I got all talky. Anyway thought you'd be very interested in this, college boy. Buy a Mac, get a Nano. (http://www.apple.com/backtoschool/?cid=WWW-NAUS-BTS20070525-LYZ8N&cp=BTS07-APL&sr=apl/) Seeing as how you already bought one.
-
actually, i did get a nano with the mac. now i have 2 nanos. an old one, and a new one.
btw, do you happen to know how to get chomper's hud to work on a mac?

also, unless you want team speex to randomly crash on you, cmd-i the app and set it to open in rosetta.

The coder of teemspeex did a lackluster jobs and if you are using the intel compiled code, sound will stop working afterabout 20 minutes and it will shortly therafter crash. it crashes it self and closes. nothing else happens. but, if you force it to open in rosetta (ppc emulator for intel macs) the legacy code is ran and teemspeex doesn't crash. blame whoever made teemspeex for being a lazy bastard.
cmd is the "apple" button. i is the key i. it will display the info of what ever you have selected. so, in finder, browse to your applications folder, select teemspeex, then hit cmd+i (hit cmd and i at the same time). then check the box that says "open in rosetta".
Also RTFM, noob.

or just ctrl-click and select "get info" rdizzzle, dont scream RTFM at him, you'll drive him away :(
-
i've been playin since last august. it will take a lot more than that to drive me away. i'm just working out how to use my new comp. anyway, thanks for the help.
btw, i actually did RTFM before i ever started playing.

i was meaning the osx manual.
:P
and i was being sarcastic, if i really meant for him to go out and find the info on his own, i wouldn't have written such a detailed how to.

um...teamspeex is not in my application folder... o.0

um...teamspeex is not in my application folder... o.0
Put it there then?
Standard installation process on macs: open disk image, drag icon to applications folder.
Often you might not bother with the second step, but it's really important if you ever want to find anything :P
Also:
Macs just work.
I lolled. Harsh but fair.

um...teamspeex is not in my application folder... o.0
hey E, two things:
1) sorry, definitely can't help with custom HUD
I haven't even made keybinds yet
I'd PM somebody like benmachine or the ever-helpful TinMan
who're pretty leet and sometime-Mac guyz
2) also check out Finder and Spotlight for finding stuff inside that little box
I couldn't find anything in mine for the first week
it was either right in front of me
or done some Mac way I'd never heard of :P
look for the Applications Support Library
and other strange places that the Mac sticks stuff
good luck and welcome to the wacky world of Mac
glad you got the free Nano
that's an OK deal

yeah it did stuff and I didn't even know how or what
the thing just works
most of the time
unless the hardware breaks down
if something doesn't happen
usually you can just try again
and/or close the application
not your whole OS
@ben: really?
thx I couldn't figure out what to do with all (three or five) of the .dmg shortcuts littering my desktop
since the MacBook seems to have already put stuff where it belongs
and these icons are either just shortcuts or copies or something
they look like a document icon with a folded corner  :-? :P

Yeah, just pointing out where the button is. For maximum clarity.

ya, and its not there. guarenteed. btw, how do you take screenshots on macs again? apple+shift+4?
-
are you guys on non-intel machines?
cause that might be the issue here...
that or maybe you don't have admin privileges on your machines?
-
ya, and its not there. guarenteed. btw, how do you take screenshots on macs again? apple+shift+4?
cmd-shift-3 = whole screen
cmd-shift-4 = selection
There's something clever you can do with option or control but I forget what. Might want to look it up in the help.
edit: cmd = apple

maybe the two of you shouldn't be allowed to use macs. as penance for failing the mac god, you shall send your macs over to me.

believe me, if my college (and major) didn't force me to buy a mac, i would use a pc no doubt.
and is rosetta soemthing i have to download? i searched for it on my mac and did not find it.
-
If your mac is an intel mac it has rosetta. Else, it doesn't. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it: if the checkbox isn't there, just use it anyway.

Equi:
I have lots of Mac experience, especially with gaming. This post is going to be kind of long but I'm a huge Apple geek and you're my buddy, so I figure I owe it to you to impart some knowledge. Trust me, you'll want to read the whole thing.
I am running 10.4.10 on a MBP 15''
2.33 GHz Intel Core Duo
2 GB RAM
256 MB ATI Radeon X1600
Yes, this computer is wicked fast. It hauls ass on all games. In Trem you can bump your max_fps to 125 and not have any problems provided your ping is under 100. I have some tips for you:
1. DMG files - you seemed a bit confused about what the .dmg file was. A DMG file is a virtual disk just like an ISO. When you open it, it will mount a disk on your desktop just like a CD would mount. You can't edit files that are on the mounted disk because that data is technically not on your hard drive, but enclosed in the virtual disk. DMGs are used for a lot of Mac software, you have to download a .dmg file, open it, open the mounted disk, and then drag-and-drop the application that is in there on to your hard drive (Applications folder usually) to run it properly.
2. Boot Camp - it's ridiculously easy to use and especially if you are going to be gaming it is basically essential. I play Oblivion, Neverwinter Nights 2, and many other graphics intense games in Boot Camp and they work beautifully. It is kind of a pain to get everything set up just how you like it, but the Boot Camp assistant is fairly easy to use. Switching between your Mac and PC partitions is easy if you use Quicksilver [see below], just follow a tutorial I published here: http://www.macinstruct.com/node/129.
3. Teamspeex - yes, it is fairly buggy but here is my experience: it works well all the time, even after leaving it running for an extended period of time. There have been a few instances where it has messed up transmitting my voice, but a quick restart fixed that problem. The main thing to worry about is that sometimes it causes a kernel panic when quitting out of Tremulous. If they are both running and then you decide to quit Trem, your screen may go black and you might have to do a hard restart (hold down the power button). I have contacted the developer about this, but I haven't noticed any damage to anythign on my computer.
4. Mac system - a few things for a newb Mac user.
A. In your Applications/Utilities folder there are a bunch of useful things. Activity Monitor is the Mac equivalent of Windows' Task Manager, although it's kind of painful to say that because Activity Monitor is so much more powerful and easier to use. Check there for system stats and to quit hanging applications (you can also press command-alt-escape to bring up the Force Quit window).
B. The Library folders - you have two Library folders on your Mac. Mac Applications use library folders to store preference data, resources, and temporary files. The first folder, /Library, is system-wide (works across users) and contains a lot of system preferences and data for applications you have installed "for all users on this computer." The second one, /Users/yourusername/Library, contains user-specific settings. This is where you will find the vast majority of application settings and resource files. You'll remember that Trem's resources appear in /Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/Tremulous.
C. Application preferences. You asked a question above about how to access Teamspeex's preferences, so I figured you might find this advice useful. Unlike in Windows where application preferences might be in the Tools > Options menu or something like that, on a Mac every app's preferences are under File > Preferences. This is where you need to head to change settings for any program. To change settings for the OS itself (system settings), use the program System Preferences (you might want to just open this up and look at every option to see what is going on on your computer).
5. Recommended software (go to macupdate.com and do a search to DL any of these):
A. Quicksilver - First thing I tell new Mac users is to download this program immediately. Its closest equivalent on a PC is Google Desktop, but Quicksilver totally blows it out of the water. QS offers instant access to a console-like interface that lets you search, open, and manipulate your files in real time. There are lots of plugins and options for system-wide hotkeying, and the power is basically endless. It may seem intimidating at first, but just hang in there and you will not regret it. There is lots of documentation for Quicksilver online, do a google search. QS literally saves me an hour every day.
B. Onyx - Gives you access to a whole bunch of hidden preferences, also maintenance and cleaning tools. Advice: don't muck around if you have absolutely no idea what a certain preference means.
C. iStat Menus - System monitoring information in your menubar. You can always have your CPU usage, network usage, RAM usage, fanspeed, temperature etc. at a quick glance. Basically essential for diagnosing any problem you might encounter, and for identifying when a program is eating too much RAM (although with 2 GB that rarely happens).
D. Adium (aka AdiumX) - the premier Mac chatting application. It's just the best, supports virtually all types of accounts and is highly customizeable.
E. smcFanControl - MBPs can get very hot, especially when gaming for hours when it is 90 degrees out already. smcFanControl allows you to control your fanspeed from the menu bar, so you can max it out before your system knows it is going to be doing a lot of work (I always set to 6000 RPM before opening Trem).
6. Useful websites:
www.macosxhints.com - the classic repository for all tips Mac. If you have any sort of problem or question it's likely the solution is here.
www.freemacware.com - they post a new free Mac application every day. Look through their archives and you will find many, many useful tools. BTW on a Mac, there is no such thing as adware.
www.macinstruct.com - a lot of articles and tutorials on how to do cool things with your Mac, ranging from beginner to advanced in difficulty level.
www.daringfireball.net - great commentary on all things Apple, will make you into an Apple cultist if you are not already.
www.tuaw.com - primary source of news for Mac users.
Well, that's all I have to say. I hope you find some of it useful and of course you can email or pm me any time if you have any Mac questions aand I will really be more than happy to answer them. I've been using Macs for 7 years now and consider myself very knowledgeable. Enjoy your MBP, man!!!
-
thanks. i'll look at it more in depth when i have the time. wow, you wrote a lot. 0.0
-
where do u seach this ~/library thing any way  :-?
-
You don't need to search for it, the tilde means your home directory. Go to your home directory and there's a folder called "Library".
It's in my signature.
You can also go to it in Finder with some hotkey like Apple+G or something that lets you type the location you want.

I was looking for this information again, and then just tried it anyway, and now I've got the files where they belong.
