Title: Trappers
Post by: Mispeled on June 27, 2007, 01:42:19 am
How do trappers work? I just know you're not supposed to put them on the floor and they work better on the walls than ceiling, but I don't know any specifics. Could someone explain them?

The require direct line of sight to work. They do not fire upwards, therefore floor trappers will only trap a human who actually treads on them.

Just /devmap and build a load of trappers in various locations then change to humans and see how they work.

They have a cone of aim, they fire a trapper shot and when the shot hits, the human is trapped. Best used with other alien buildings that can slow the human down so the trapper blob can hit. They also have more range than turrets.

If only there were some kind of thread (http://tremulous.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=641) that completely detailed all the little nuisances of building an alien base, like trapper placement and how their Conefireā„¢ works...

Nah, I'm joking with the snark; took me way longer to re-find that thread than it should have.  Dunno why it's not pinned, anyhow.

Dunno why it's not pinned, anyhow.
mainly because there's already too many sticky threads in general.

If that's the case, at least link it from here (http://tremulous.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1049).

and yet...

I bookmark useful threads, even though I barely save anything else on this laptop.

@David: even (especially?) with four wikis, the information is easier to ask about than look up, at times... just because somebody wiki'd it, doesn't mean that it's gospel/canon/true/accepted knowledge... and wikis tend to peter out and trail off, to a large extent... that unfinished feeling leaves a question in the user's head... driving them to seek knowledge from current users... thus people ask questions in a chat forum... no major surprises there :P

@Steely: one thread that was alive a year ago for ten days? no shame in reviving/remembering/linking/necroing/bumping that one... thx, glad you were here then... I'm too new to even know that one ever existed... :D

Sticky Prospect: List of Useful Threads, arranged by topic, corresponding to the ordering of the manual

Which brings up my point. My suggestion is not to sticky all useful threads, but to make one sticky of useful threads, arranged by topic. As a template one could use, oh I don't know, the manual? In addition to the FAQ & what's-missing-from-the-manual, how about one sticky, arranged by topic, in the same order the material appears in the manual, with links to useful threads? Just a big list of topics, and a big list of threads.

In other words, made by a mod, with the first post being continually updated - possibly by a group, like a wiki, but right here on the Trem forum. Also, users could post proposed links, which could be added (and posts deleted), or not, as mods see fit. Threads which degenerate in their usefulness could be removed from the list.

Sub-Forum Proposal: Strategy & Tactics

Alternatively, I'd like to see a section of the forums devoted to just strategy, tactics and teamplay, separate from General Discussion. A purely "How to Play Tremulous (As it Exists Today)" section, with all the base-building, room naming, map strategies, combo move, "how do I use this class/weapon/item/structure?" questions and etc. Discrete from the rest of the discussions. Let's just talk about playing Tremulous, or provide references to where those discussions/threads/wikis/blogs exist, in one section of the Forums. Not what could be changed about it (Feedback), or how to compile it (Mods, for some reason), or who is a spammer (Off Topic, v0t3 4 m3), or my clan rulez/ur server sux (duh), or 0h n03z! t3h 4!mb0773rz0rz'l'z! (General Discussion), or "OpenGL won't load!" (Troubleshooting), or "tjw's admin commands" (the Secret Cabal of Ownerz, Opz & Adminz), just actual gameplay questions about how to successfully play Tremulous.

Anyhoo, cheers, y'all... ;p

I have been thinking about that one and will come to it, right after reworking some parts of the gameplay/flow guide, the entity list specific to trem on the mapping wiki and fcp. Or maybe I'll do this one a bit earlier. I've just been so busy with life in general for anything more than a skimthrough of the forums for modding lately.

Ooh I like that one. But keep it a secret.

player1:

After multiple requests in IRC and your post now, I approved the idea and added a sub-forum: "Strategies & Ideas". I don't know if the mods can, but if they, it would be kind if they could move regarding topics to this forum.
