Title: Error when creating a local server
Post by: *<|:D on July 08, 2007, 03:04:36 am
Whenever I try to create a server (ie /devmap atcs) I get a "Starting Up" screen, then it reverts to the mainpage with an error that says "sv_botfreeclient bad clientNum: 33551196" This didn't used to happen...any idea what could cause this?

SEARCH.

Just use the original Tremulous, no TJW.

I like to talk, and I like to try and help people.
except much more often than not you provide completely false information, then when one of us corrects you you go back to spamming that thread.
Give me an example.

here you go:

I use the original Tremulous which I downloaded off this site, no TJW, no GUID, to devmap. That's the only thing that works for me. So no, that isn't false information. Nice try, kevlarman. By your attempt here I assume you haven't been able to find any other examples. Am I right? Prove me wrong. Just try.

using the stock client just empties your base folder. the real issue is a game.qvm compiled with svn syscalls in your base/vm/.

However, using stock Tremulous solves the problem, so while not the best solution, it is in no way false.

except it doesn't solve the problem for people who had downloads enabled before they got the backport client, or put mod pk3s in base for whatever reason.

Perhaps not, but some time ago I found a solution to that with a quick google search. Now I simpily use stock 1.1.0 because that's what works. Besides, who on these forums doesn't have a GUID, and therefore wouldn't have my solution work for them? Srsly.
Four posts already. This is in majorly tiny font because it's completely irrelevant to the discussion.

Still it's the wrong solution. Instead of getting the new fixed server to run, you just go back to the old broken one. And you don't even fix the problem for good because the game just ignores the Tremulous user directory. If you put SVN game.qvm to the global base folder, the problem is back. The correct solution is to get SVN compatible tremded.

this community sucks
1) how do you know he can find the solution using search
2) if you know there exist such a thread, you have the link why dont you give the it?
3) if you think the question is stupid why do you even reply

point is "use search blabla" doesnt make sense

Yes, this community indeed sucks. But the reason is that noobs don't bother to search for obvious keywords like "opengl AND subsystem" or "sv_botfreeclient" first. Search for "sv_botfreeclient" gives you 12 results including this thread and 5 of them include complete description of the problem AND a solution.

I wish this forum worked like travian.cz where mods lock duplicit threads within a few hours and point the lazy noob to game FAQ. That would save a whole lot of my development time wasted answering the same questions over and over here.

simple solution: don't answer them.
So you can have more "development time"

That's not an option for me. Out of 20 troubleshooting threads that somebody posts each month there's always at least one real issue I can help fix. So either I can quit Tremulous development completely or I can keep pointing lazy noobs to search.

Pointing the noobs to search seems to shut them up so at least it reduces the number of posts I have to read looking for real problems. I'd really appreciate if .f0rqu3 and other noobs' rights activists would shut up as well unless they're willing to find the correct solution and keep posting it over and over instead.

next_ghost, who do you think you are to say my solution is the wrong solution? Hat, correct me if I'm wrong, but you don't expect any people on your server, right? You just want a quick devmap session to test a map or something. If that is the case, then my solution works perfectly, so I'd appreciate it if you'd stop your bitching, next_ghost. Why don't you spend your time answering the one of twenty rather then pissing us off in the other nineteen. This one's obviously been fixed by me and kevlarman. If the first post is retarted, press the fucking back button and save us all five minutes.

I'm not exactly tech savvy, but deleting this (http://tremulous.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5287&highlight=zzzolz+pk3) seemed to fix it. I am not running a dedicated server.

That pk3 seems to have been made entirely for the purpose of breaking things. A pox on whoever created it.

Quick fix for that error when making a server that noone mentioned and im very surprised.......

DONT MAKE IT DEDICATED !!
In the making server options change it from dedicated and it will work.

Technical reason why your solution is incorrect: it works only on Windows and only once! If the problem happens again, you're screwed.

With TJW's client you have these base folders:
X:\whereever\Tremulous\base
C:\Documents and Settings\...\Tremulous\base

You connect to some crappy server and download some useless PK3 that overrides your default game.qvm breaking localhost server. So you go back to stock client which doesn't search C:\Documents and Settings\...\Tremulous\base and it seems the problem is fixed because that stupid PK3 is not loaded anymore since stock client doesn't search Documents and Settings base folder.

Then you connect to another crappy server (or even the same one), the PK3 now goes to X:\whereever\Tremulous\base and the only way to fix the problem now is to go for SVN compatible tremded which is the right solution in the first place.

Oh, and you'd save us all 10 minutes in each troubleshooting thread if you'd stop trying to solve problems when you don't understand their cause.

Doesn't work. Listenserver throws a dialog box with that error message and dies. Dedicated server throws error message into console and dies.

My solution works. I, myself, haven't run into this error again. It's not the best solution, but it is a solution, and it does work.

it works sometimes for some people, and that makes it a bad solution, especially when someone finds this thread by searching and this doesn't work for them.

I wasn't aware it didn't work for everybody. It works for me, and I use what works. Other people can choose to or not to use this method.
