ok i need help with the strafe jumping >_< im a newb and dont understand how it makes u go faster, can somebody explain this to me?
-
it doesn't
your thinking of other games
-
Are you sure?? im sure ive heard of it in trem
-
if you are practicing jumping a lot, and tapping space SO wild, probably you will push button 'x' also, wich is for sprinting. that makes u move faster :-)
-
Here you go.

Though the best way to learn it would be by meeting someone in-game that can do it so they can help you 1 on 1. Just PM me a time.
-
Have not heard of this before.
Thanks for the wiki :)

wikipedia is an unreliable source on strafejumping because that article tends to get deleted a lot. this (http://www.velocity.lunarpages.com/trickjumping.html) is the best source of information on learning to strafe jump i've found so far.

There is no tactical advantage to strafe jumping in tremulous. Bother with aim, timing and predictive analytics since they are of far greater consequence.

It does help. Might not help a lot but it does give aliens a quicker speed.
Grangers/Adv Granger: The humans are attacking your base and you need to escape to build somewhere else. So you strafe jump to get away quicker.
Dretches: Just for overall speed, way faster than normal bunny hopping.
Marauder/Adv Marauder: I don't know how many times I've escaped as a Marauder because of strafe jumping, way faster than normal jumping.
Tyrant: If you're good enough at strafe jumping you can find that it is almost as good as charging, if not better.
Pretty bad showing of the strafe jumping's usefullness but like I already said. It helps with speed on aliens.
-And on humans, sometimes I escape Tyrants by strafe jumping to get back to my base faster.

Thanks a lot Kev and Anger.

dretches and basis benefit the most, both in traveling across the map and closing the distance between you and a human (although strafejumping means that you're going in a straight line, so doing it at the wrong time to close the distance can and will get you killed).

I have some jump demos in here: http://neonpulse.net/files/games/tremulous/base/
-
I use a circle jump which is a variation of a strafe jump. For clearing the atcs gap.
Also Mara is the best I think with strafe jumpin. You can get from one end of atcs to the other, around the middle thing in 3 jumps without stoping. Im sure anger knows what I mean. You dont hit anything or stop, its so fast.
-
Aside from the speed, trickjumps also gives you something different to do that your opponents don't expect. Most of shotty vs rauder is the shotty predicting where the rauder is going to land, but circlejumping gives the rauder a second type of jump that makes it land in a different place. This is much the same for dretch v s1 human dancing games.

Well, I read up a little bit on strafejumping and tried it out today, and I figured my limited knowledge is enough to take a stab at answering the question in the OP. So here's a very informal and possibly inaccurate tutorial on strafejumping (AKA circle strafe jumping, or CSJ). Please post any commentary or corrections, you'll improve the tutorial and teach me something as well.
EDIT: I guess I shouldn't spread misinformation, so I've taken down the tutorial and will now work harder at the "never talk again" bit.

you can easily get across the gap on atcs with just sprint, and half of your directions are completely wrong.
-
kev is right.
Computer, go DL DeFRaG and watch some demos before you talk ever again.

I thought sprint only worked for Humans :-?
does it do anything for Aliens?
-
all aliens except granger have a speed multiplier equal to or greater than human sprint (except maybe basi, i don't feel like checking exactly) and except the tyrant they have much better jump heights as well. all aliens larger than granger can make that jump, but some of them (mostly tyrant) need to do a strafe jump and possibly a bunny hop to pull it off.

Doesn't look like many ppl can do it, and its a great way to escape the tyrants
(And yes, trem's stamina sucks)
-
Getting good at making that jump with a tyrant makes for some fun times. People feel they're safe for a little bit, and then you just skip the walking and jump across. Always a surprise for the humans on the recieving end of your slashes.

it's a lot better on tjw's actually, jump costs half as much stamina now.

I remember I did that once and the guy chasing me called me out for hacking.

In the end jumps have to look like this (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1660628336267047494&hl) or Dvinsk Clan (http://youtube.com/watch?v=JEbYtOEftc0&mode=related&search=)

anger what servers do you frequent? I wanna catch you sometime.
damn, i understood what they said at the end of the clan video.
"are u gonna train tonight?"
"no, the train is coming"

we really need a trickjump server/map :D
-
I'm quite used to get over the ATCS gaps with a Tyrant, but it is indeed quite more easy with humans... Or dragoons :D

Dretches getting killed on the far side of human base, and then returning before humans can cover the short distance to their base and back can be a big advantage. They don't expect you so fast, and you can prepare an ambush (pre s2 :) )
edit: Lots of people evolve in base then go to attack the human base. Not me, I'll strafe jump a dretch to a location near their base then evolve. Some maps (Like UTCSB ) you can evolve around the corner of the low side. Humans don't see a tyrant go down there, only coming out a little closer to their base. There are lots of such locations, and as a dretch you can get there very fast.

do flame jumps work. I know alot about strafe jumps but other types of jumps. Luci jumps are pure annoying and flame jumps, I have only seen once work. And other devices of jumps?
-
I doubt flame jumps work because the flames bounce off of the walls and floors, but they don't provide much knockback.
Go get a flamer and shoot it at the ground and see if you fly up.
-
Flamejumps only work if you turn on godmode and turn knockback way way up.
-
Hmm, interesting stuff.
