Title: GloBan
Post by: ShadowNinjaDudeMan on August 06, 2007, 04:05:30 pm
GloBan, is my wee backround project, in which people can send in ID's, IP's and offenses of diffrent people so that server owners can update their server lists with these entries.

Im just working on some sort of data submit system, then storing that in a database.

aha, and who validates the data?
who get's to decide if it is a positive positive?

where to appeal to for false positives?
who is the arbiter?

but most off all.... Who get's access to the IDs, that is if there really is still a retard that does not have server-unique-id?

Well, Ill let server masters decide if the person should be submitted or not.

who get's to decide if it is a positive positive?

Srever Masters

where to appeal to for false positives?

Me, I suppose...

who is the arbiter?

What, is an Arbiter?

but most off all.... Who get's access to the IDs, that is if there really is still a retard that does not have server-unique-id?
Well, Me, and any other individuals I can trust (at this time, no one else could be able to edit the registryies.)

Weellll, Ive decided that i will get rid of ID's, since the ppl will just change their nmes.

Instead, the only fields will be offence and IP.
Shall I make it only IP?

It has been thought of many times before. The idea is flawed, it will not work. Teh End, kthxbai.

I know it is flawed, but I might as well try it, see how it goes.
But Im not gonna dissmiss it.

Well, it's a decent idea.

I, however have a few ideas to add to it.

How about whenever someone on the global ban list shows up on your server, a little window pops up to all admins (of a certain level) that says "[Name|Slot] Is on the Global Ban List. Allow to Play, Remove Certain Priveleges (Auto-Denybuild Him, Turn BFF and FF of specifically for him, etc), or Kick / Ban?" the admin could then decide on whether to Allow him to play normally, to deny him certain rights, or to Kick / Ban him. If an admin is not present, he gets auto-kicked / auto-banned and the next admin to enter chooses to unban him or leave the ban.

The only flaws are that someone could be banned without proper reason. My idea fixes that, with admin choices.

Besides the obvious flaw of registering dynamic IPs that might have been used by an alleged cheater with no real point of appeal.

Too much power resides in the hand of _one_ player/admin that trusts all server
masters (that is at least 2 steps below the server owner) to submit an IP-Name combo.

Sorry, I wish you best of luck with this project.

The *Wraths will not be using this project. Neither to submit nor to poll bans.

And I urge all Server-Owner to think about if they really do trust hear-say from strange server-masters from a place that has neither an arbiter nor someone to verify the allegations.

I meant to say server owners, srry, i thought they were the same thing.
I dunno, maybe Trem could connect to the online DataBase, and search thru the IPs itself.

And that would mean a project like PunkBuster. Which btw can be circumvented as easily as d/l an aimbot.

There is just no way this will really work. Especially not in an OSS game.

Oh and btw, did you consider the legal ramifications?
Not all countries take kindly to slander, if a player gets wrongly accused of cheating and gets barred from playing on a server that uses your DB you just might be liable... IANAL

And your Idea with the IPs is the flaw in itself. Consider dynamic IPs. You just get _one_ IP banned that was used, and then you might get into trouble when the next trem-player gets that IP.

Baning by IP is only useful if the IP is static, but how many player have one of those?
(I don't know of one)

The only use I could see for such a system is where someone isn't autobanned because of hearsay from a strange server owner, but perhaps just tagged with a warning.

IE someone connects and active admins are sent a message that they have been observed doing offense x before and perhaps you should watch out for them.

Granted, but that would require _really_ identifying the player.
Which is not possible at the moment.

How about by GUID as well as IP. Both can be changed, but if you're an admin on several servers, deleting your GUID and getting a new one is a painstaking process, as you have to request admin all over again.

I agree, however, in that there is no completely effective method.

This only improves the chance that aimbotters will be caught.

i think that this should be a something like a permanent record, the user will remain banned from the server for the alloted amount of time, but the ban and reason will be logged with name, ip, and guid

can you spell "unique guid per server"? So such a DB is senseless here.

And baning by GUID is already available. So again, a DB is senseless...

True

I should have thought of that.

I think this idea would work but you would have to employ highly skilled players to report the hackers. Only accept reports from these players.

People who have been playing for a long time know how to spot hackers much better than the random reporter who got owned by someone who's good at the game.

The system would block people who have abused trust.
The system would rely extensively on trust.

Anyone else notice a major problem there?

i still like my idea of a permanent record system, on the master there would be a database of guids along with namelogs and previous offenses.  the server would send the player's ip to the server, the server would request the guid from the client, and the ban and reason would go on the list
