Title: benmachine's engineering challenge thread
Post by: benmachine on August 10, 2007, 02:38:39 am
Here's the deal: I post a screenshot, you get me a demo of how I did it.

Challenge 1:
http://www.bandstand.org.uk/~benm/trem/engineer-challenge/01/winners.xhtml
Challenge 2:
http://www.bandstand.org.uk/~benm/trem/engineer-challenge/02/winners.xhtml
And number 3:
or if that's not clear enough you can have three (http://www.bandstand.org.uk/~benm/trem/engineer-challenge/03/screenshot2.jpg) additional (http://www.bandstand.org.uk/~benm/trem/engineer-challenge/03/screenshot3.jpg) angles (http://www.bandstand.org.uk/~benm/trem/engineer-challenge/03/screenshot4.jpg)
Get that set up in stage 1, with no more than 100 bp and standard gravity, speed settings etc. Markdecon is not allowed.
I'd like you to name your demo [yourforumusername].dm_69 or similar, so it's easy to keep track of whose it is. The relevant commands are:
/record benmachine.dm_69
/stoprecord

Once you have your demo, you can get it to me via a number of ways:
PM me with your entry, do not post it in this thread. I will add you to a list of people who have completed to the challenge, but we don't want to go spoiling it for everyone else now do we?
The winners get a prize of some kind, whatever I can assemble at short notice.
Challenge 3 has been extended a bit - because it is the hardest and because I was kind of late setting it up - into the middle of next week. I entend to have number 4 up by Wednesday.

khalsa, Fluxflashor and next_ghost added the the completed list.

Guys, if you go and get lakitu7's QVM and put it in the appropriate place, you get instant building in devmap... anything that obviously could be reproduced in normal Tremulous is allowed.

YourMama: you can't use it anyway, so why ask? :P but it's g_markDeconstruct 1, if you have the right QVM.

If I knew we were allowed to use devmap I would have used my clan server for this challenge since we run Lakitu of there :( I wasn't sure if we were allowed to use quickbuild so I didn't want to chance it.

Taiyo.uk: heh, someone sent me a demo for that by accident :P still haven't got your demo, by the way.
Your latter imge can no longer be reproduced, though - that bug has been fixed somewhat. Paradox's is more like it but it's also boring :P I mean, anyone can build on a box. I'm looking for creativity here, and lateral thinking. That kind of stuff, not exploits.
Today I discovered a third challenge to go in the pipeline - and it is a cunning one.
Terribly...

...cunning.

Nux, you sneaky bastard :P

I'll allow that one, but from now on you may not connect more than ne client to the server to complete the challenge :P
although granger towers are decidedly awesome.

Nux and YourMama received, verified.

edit: Nux's second demo received and verified properly this time :P
/dev/humancontroller... that overmind jump looks suspicious, but I'm going to let this slide because it would've been so easy for you to get up there anyway.

Third :-? ? We haven't even finished the first one   . Well, the more the better I guess.

EDIT: I think I just figured out what the "very original" way of doing it was, must go test it and use it in the other challenges.

EDIT # 2: It works.

Third because I like to plan ahead :> they are quite hard to come by, so I made sure I had one or two spare before starting the challenge.
And I didn't say it was "very" original, it was just another method of doing it which had not ocurred and I did not expect to work.

Right, my mistake.

I think I do know a VERY original way of doing it though, but it might be the same type of thing as Nux's sneaky one. Hmmm...

Got it, verified it. Although I'm suspicious of how you managed to call up an overmind blueprint while the old one was still alive, it was ultimately of no consequence.

Everyone: you have until I post in this thread again, which will not be for at least 9 and a half hours but could be any time after that.

Verified AKAnotu and patriotpie.

Also thanks to nux and puma for sending me some nice ideas for future challenges. Feel free to send me them, anyone, and I will consider them for inclusion. I'm still not entirely sure which idea I'm going to use for the next challenge, it may well be one of yours :)

Double post, so sue me.

And... it's over!
Due to the large number of images, links et al I've assembled a webpage detailing the results, distributing cookies (and one gold star) and linking everyone's demo.
Cookie stocks ran low towards the end of the entries, so I'm afraid not all of you got a whole one. Such is life! Get in quicker next time.

And for the next challenge, I'm bringing out the big guns:
Go!
Note: you are only allowed 100BP, so you must leave no buildables behind elsewhere. You need not replicate the base exactly, but I require that all thoes buildables be present somewhere near where they are at least.

Yup, same rules. Probably most of my bases are going to be s1, because the movement tools of s2 on both teams are just too powerful to make anything difficult.
And Bull Islander... can't believe I missed that combination :P excuse my insatiable curiousity.
Initial impressions, by the way, appear to be that this is a lot easier than I thought :( there are at least two shortcuts of which I wasn't aware. Finding difficult problems is harder than it seems I guess.

There's whole areas of transit you can walk through, jetpack through, see through... it patently wasn't designed with jetpackers/wallwalkers/pouncers in mind.

If you're really having trouble, I suggest building a medistat to stand on while you place the turrets, and when necessary only walking along the edges of the light.

I had intended to let this challenge run til Friday, but it doesn't seem to be going so well so I'll probably post a new one on Wednesday or Thursday.

ben, the reason you didn't see much building, because

1. I don't know what you want untill you tell me. I kept away from the time-consuming boring videos.
2. I've made the least building needed to build an egg there, just as if I were in a real game, where building speed is important.
3. I thought the placement was strict, that is, in your demo you rebuilt the overmind, I didn't.

So please stock up another cookies for me next time.

First of all, I made the "prize" intentionally worthless so that people wouldn't whine if they didn't get one. I am guilty of blatant favouritism but it doesn't matter because all you got was a little jpeg anyway.
What I didn't like about your demo is that I didn't see how you built all those buildings - just how you used them in the end. This is a building competition, not a jumping on buildings competition.

The fact was, I only bought one packet and I wanted to give a whole one to Puma because he sent me a bunch of other useful stuff. I already spent 59p on you ungrateful bastards and I am not spending any more :P
(well I say I spent it on you... but no prizes for guessing where the cookies went after I'd pictured them)

If you want a whole cookie you're either going to have to be nice, or be quick.

To be quite honest, I picked the 05 because I made the name in 2004 (It was december so I figured 05 would be a bit better).  Also, I looked and there already was a Bullislander.

To be back on topic, I don't think I'll be able to do any more challenges Benmachine, seeing that I've quit trem.  I'll keep checking the forums to see what the challenges are though (So I can figure out a solution in my head.  =))

Mmmm, that was a tough challenge : D. Meh, I think I didn't do it via the easiest way. I'm really curious to see how others did it after this challenge ends >_>.

Only tried once, got halfway, got stuck. Oh and I did the challenge in tremx because i downloaded arcade and it messed up my trem, and the nromal base devmap doesn't auto build for me.

Yeah I was surprised no one took this name too, and I'm famous for not having a name at school.

Contradiction!

Back on topic though, I'd like to thank benmachine for making these challenges and rewards because I haven't done so yet, and he deserves the praise.

The only reason I didn't attempt the 3rd challange because I don't play nonstandard maps. Today I took another glance at the screenshot. lol

Arachnid2 isn't standard now? When did that happen?

No, I didn't mean that arachnid2 is not in the mainstream Tremulous anymore. I mean when the first time I looked at the screenshot, I didn't recognize that it was arachnid2. I thought it was some quick noobmap with very bad graphics. Some time ago I looked at the screenshot again, and discovered that it was actually arachnid2 without lightmaps.

This looks cool, maybe I'll try it. I want a cookie like the first round.

And so does my friend.
