Hey all, I just thought I'd post a list of current events which are happening around the globe and locally. Feel free to add to this list :D
Date: 9/10/07
Event: Free Hugs Day!
Where: Everywhere in the U.S.A
Type: Causes and Rally
Start Time: September 10, 2007 at 12:00am
End Time: September 11, 2007 at 12:00am
Description:
This day will be remembered as the biggest Free Hug day this world has ever seen. Everybody get ready, this one is going to be HUGE.
The Reason for the date,
September 10th is the day before 9/11. We will all sit down on that day and think about the tragedies that have befallen this world, we will think of the twin towers, of the iraq war, of the terrorist attacks all over the world. We will think to ourselves...what has this world come to? where has the good gone. That is why i created this event, so when you do ask yourself that, you think about all the hugs you had recieved the day before and you think to yourself that there is love left.
i want people to be reminded that this world has a great amount of good left in it, and that it should never be forgotten.

Date: 8/28/07
Event: Total Lunar Eclipse
Where: Everywhere in the world
Type: Astronomical Event
Start Time: August 28, 2007 at 12:00am
End Time: August 28, 2007 at 6:00am
Description:So because I love science and particularly have an affinity for all things celestial I thought my friends all over the globe might want to join me for this. Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will culminate on Monday Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Monday Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it again.
Pluse how cool will it be for us all to be looking up at the night sky all at the same time : )
so not quite as cool or true as I was hopeing but a lunar eclips is pretty rad too...because we'll all be looking at the moon at the same time : )

Date: 9/17/07
Event: Police Accountability Act
Where: Portland, Oregon
Type: Rally
Start Time: September 17th, 2007 at 12:00am
End Time: September 18th, 2007 at 12:00am
Description:James Chasse was murdered by the Portland police. He was tazed, kicked in the head, beaten, jumped on, and hog tied. And then he "mysteriously" died in police custody. I saw a picture of him on the "beat goes on" thread on this site. It made me want to know more about him.
When the police kill someone in this city, too often they are allowed to define who that person was. Through the police officers' apologist mouthpieces in the corporate media, all we ever learn is a few extraneous facts, usually not even accurate. Whether the person ever did drugs or not, we are fed snippets to make us believe they were a drug addict. If they were ever in trouble with the law, we are told that. If they were poor or homeless or somehow different than the Brady Bunch family, we are told those details. But never anything more. We are never given a real picture of the real human being whose living and breathing flesh was so terribly assaulted by the police state that they have been added to the long list of people who gave their lives to the Force. The brute force of power crazed thugs in uniform.

NOT! (http://www.skyandtelescope.com/news/8708182.html)
:P  :)
plus which I just went outside and looked anyways
not only ain't it possible, it didn't happen
(I needed to walk out to the truck anyways)
the diameter of Mars is about 4200 miles
the diameter of the Moon is about 2100 miles
the Moon is about 350,000 miles away
Mars is never closer than about 55 million miles
both reflect sunlight
and the Moon is whiter
Mars can never appear as large or as bright as the Moon
unless something catastrophically different changes one of the related values
maths is fun!
also, Mars, in Taurus, has just cleared the ENE horizon, while the Moon, in Capricorn, is just about due south right now (@ time of post, from my location)

looking at the sky can be enjoyable when you know what it is you are seeing
take any person who says astronomy is better than astrology outside on a clear night and ask them to point to any three objects or groups of objects other than the Moon, the Big Dipper or the streetlight
the average person would be hard pressed to even find a planet, much less know what effect it was having on them (hint(s): they can be found almost within the same path the Sun and Moon take, and both Venus and Mercury are between the Earth and the Sun, so these two are always near the Sun; whereas Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn can be at zenith even at midnight)
most moderns know less about the sky (while feeling they are smarter) than any sailor, witch or priest of the Bronze Age
the scientists may know way more than the ancients did, but the electric light has made the rest of us much stupider in this regard than any farmer of the 19th century (another hint: not only do the planets come up in the East, take practically the same path that the Sun took and set in the West, you have a better chance of seeing at least three of them if you are facing South*; the other two, as mentioned, are always near the Sun)
challenge: see how many days per year you can actually see Mercury, unless you live on the salt flats
do like teh pl0x did
walk outside and look up (or even over)
*assumes that the reader is in North America, Europe, or Asia, and about 30 to 60 degrees North of the Equator; educated users should adjust accordingly
now that I've rained on ur parade I'm gonna go sleep thru the lunar eclipse
u guys go outside and play Trem on ur laptops by the light of the darkening moon
then write a report about how eerie and communal it was and post it here[/size]
Aug 28th
I get one year older
me just slightly before that
u must be t3h Virgo (http://www.astrology-online.com/virgo.htm)
Happy Birthday! :D

Just go and embarrass me there player1
-
didn't mean to make you look bad
I just happen to be teh space cadet, scifi boy and stargazing fool who stands in his backyard looking up a 2 am
:D
plus I coincidentally looked at this thread @ 12:30 am Monday, August 27th
after pointedly ignoring it for three days
spooky...
you may enjoy the above links
I don't have a telescope
so I use the listed sites to keep myself informed
of recent astronomical happenings
then with the use of google
I can sound like I know what I'm talking about
just happened to know about
the Great Mars Hoax
from last year
Rose City Astronomers (http://www.rca-omsi.org/) is another site which is very useful for skywatchers in Stumptown
also two of the above-listed sites are specifically tailored to Portland
(the two darksky sites)
and with yoursky (from the folks who brought you autodesk), you can show the sky anywhere @ anytime
(so you can make instant location- and time- and date-specific star charts: the shiz-B-nizzles, yo)
Cheers!
did the eclipse happen? it would be cool to IM somebody while watching the same celestial event from remote locations

Saturday the 15th of September is Software Freedom Day (http://softwarefreedomday.org/)
