Kaleo's Mapping Competition [TAKE 2]
NOTICE!!!
MAPS ARE DUE
Rules
• Maps must use textures and shaders from only one official director (i.e. you may only use textures from Nexus6, ATCS and other maps released in the official build). The reason for this, is this is a
competition. I want to make it a challenge.

Shaders:
If custom shaders; allowed, but they need to use the textures specified.
Criteria:
Map's will be judged on candy and playability. Other factors may sway judges too, such as creative thinking, good lighting and a $100 note*.

Deadline
All maps MUST be in by the 30th of September. Late maps will not be counted. Finalists will be announced on the 7th of October, and the winner will be announced on the 10th.
All maps will be released in a map pack at the end of judgment.

Kaleo, I'm missing the criteria to judge of. Could you please specifiy them? Else the level designers and the judge won't know, on what they have to cast an eye.

Also, what is the criteria? I'd like to know what I'm going to be focusing on. Are we going for gameplay? Objective based like the current version of Siege? Looks? Is there a theme?...i smell a phail ... again

I encourage everyone to write your own shaders
using the existing textures.

You are of course right Survivor, this is kaleo's competition, therefor he has the final word on the rules. Maybe the word shader sounds somewhat touchy in my ears and I was bitten in the behind by monday-morning :wink:

Agreed.
This is a competition. It has challenges. I fully thought this through after it failed last time.
However, if you want a stronger light, or a transparent wall, then you are free to do so... Just make sure that all the textures are the same.

Yeah it's just that. Without using own shaders and particle systems, it is just recycling. With own shader and particle systems, it is creativity.

Thank you for clearing this out, now you should update the first post. By the way, shaders also mean, that detail textures may be used (those are no real textures, which you can simply put on a wall, but they are needed for glass- smoke or other kind of shaders. Bump map textures (normal maps) should also be allowed.

also can someone post a list of the default maps we can steal textures from? my base folder has 30-50 maps in it. I installed trem when it first came out. can't remember what came with it initially.

Are custom models allowed? Because my models contain textures that are not included in the maps listed. Then I'll think about making one... Since most of my maps are pretty based on models(I didn't release the maps because they are unplayable)

btw... maybe ull find this question silly, but can i use textures from eg. niveus AND nexus6? or only niveus or nexus6? i found that not really clear... i guess that from both but i ask just for surety...

I don't. It makes it more challenging and exciting this way because there are limitations. If everyone could do what they wanted it wouldn't really be a good competion.

That limitations can improve a competition does not mean that all limitations improve the competition.
Limiting that which outwardly is most important in making things look more varied is a surefire way of actually killing creativity.
Imposing limits on brushcount, entitycount, modelcount, min/max size, forcing people to include certain elements like teleporters, 3 tiered bases or so succesfully is what makes it a better challenge.
If you want a competition and you limit something so basic yet so determing it would be like having a timberbuilding competition where people can only use screws no longer than 6 cm or only 1 kind of screw. It severely limits the moods one can set in a map.
For example there is absolutely no way for someone to introduce a real alien feel to a map because all official maps are heavily techno oriented and you can't edit them. If you were for example to impose the rule 'make an alien area in your map which feels and looks so' it would add to uniqueness of a map. Someone could go for having defaced techno textures, maybe editing the original ones to have webs and slime over them, truly ambitious might go and make or look for alien looking images.
We have discussed this however in the other competition and compared to that this one is at least free.

but its just that the most textures that fit my theme are in one map, then some useful shaders (like grates etc) and textures (in quite low amount) are in another one. that made a problem, tho as i said - i will handle it, just doin it in a different way, cuz its idea-dependent.

If you mean you want to release your map for the comp and in the forums, then you cant... Maps are to be given to me, then the judges will test them before announcing them to the community.

I've been thinking this over and I might be in. We'll see if I have the time, though, now that summer has past.
The required use of textures limited to what comes stock with trem is tough. I have already had to scrap several good ideas because of this.

Yes.

Yes. You cannot use textures from Nexus6 to write new shaders if you are using a Niveus set.

I am posting my map now because i will not be able to post later without being late for the comp. I have noticed a few errors but i can't be bothered to correct them now. I know i used the ladder shader from transit but that is the one thing i had trouble with so i had to use it from a different map. D:

He can't really hold anything against you. The ladder shader only uses a texture inside radiant and only if you want it to. Ingame it has no dependencies and in my view it is a standard part of the common textures where I've also put it in my install.

I think you're only supposed to release it after its been judged. I think i even saw it being played in the maplist today. Better check it out with kaleo.

i didnt do a public release, i only tested it with friends to find some bugs. and there was a password on the server.

I would personally like you to remove that picture.
The maps are supposed to be for the judges eyes only, so if you could edit your post.

why prolong the release of the maps for the public?
isnt the point of this competition to get more maps out there? why make people who have put a lot of time and effort into their maps wait to release their maps just because youre judging them?
it really doesnt make any sense to me...you guys can judge maps while others play them regardless.
and asking him to remove a screenie? thats even worse.
it barely shows anything.
btw, kazior you do realize you have light circles in that screenie without actual light sources, right?

If that's true, I'd like a couple more days to clean up my map. There were several bugs (z-fighting, leaking, nodraw on objects that weren't meant to be nodraw'd) that I left unfixed because I was in a rush to send it in and I didn't believe my entry would be able to compete with the other maps. If it's just kazior, creature, and me, though...
Are we going to need a take 3 on this thing?
