We finally got our internet connection from telus.
They've given us a Siemens SE 567 'Wireless Gateway'. To put it straight, the thing is shit. But, we're forced to use it. I had a D-Link 624+ properly set up for my tremulous server and website.
My problem is that the Siemens gateway doesn't have static dhcp (which I require due to the wireless nature of my server...shhh), but the D-Link does.
Is there a successful way to set up the Siemens to serve an IP address to the WAN port of the D-Link (or perhaps DMZ it), and still keep our internet?
-
WAN IP address of your router is received from your ISP. Some ISPs offer static IP as a paid service.
-
Why are you forced to use the Siemens?
-
Because they've not given us a 'modem' seperately.
The gateway is the only thing capable of converting from dsl (telephone) to ethernet (rj45).
The gateway has a built in dsl modem.
The dlink works well, but refuses to work along with the Siemens.
Also, si it possible to use thatgateway only as a modem?
-
Get a proper DSL modem then.
Or, make the Siemens gateway run in bridge mode and connect your old router to one of the ethernet ports. Make sure you disable the wireless too on the Siemens gateway.

Apparently Telus has _updated_ their policies. The reason I cannot run my server is that Telus has decided that it is a security issue to have 'open ports' and so they disallow all access other than outbound.
Unless of course you pay out of the nose for a server plan.
WHAT THE FUCK IS THE POINT OF BANDWIDTH IF YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO USE IT? JUST PAYING FOR NOTHING?
:x
-
JUST PAYING FOR NOTHING?
Good for them, bad for you. Lots of ISPs promise more than they want to actually give you and when people start to figure that out they will sneak something in the policy with a bs answer or move it up to some business only tier..
-
ISN'T THAT THEFT?
-
As I wrote on broadbandreports:
What is the point of bandwidth....
If your not allowed to use any of it?
We bought Telus High Speed Enhanced December 26th 2006 and 11:30am. We were told to wait a week for them to call us, which they never did. So we called them at the end of that week, to which they said the didn't have enough 'ports', and that we were on a 3 - 6 month waiting list. So fine, we wait.
At seven months (Around beginning of August) we call them back and they have NO RECORD of our contract, yet we have a contract they signed as well in our possession. Strike One.
We then got through their telephone lines after two hours of wait, to which they again 'signed us up' and for us to wait 3 - 5 business days.
Guess what? Three weeks later we call back, and they are 'shocked' because we haven't had any modem delivered to us, BUT THEY WERE CHARGING US FOR THE INTERNET NONE THE LESS.
Strike Two.
Now we finally get our internet, nine months and two broken contracts later. The connection is shoddy, giving out during peak hours every 2 - 3 minutes, and moreso....
THEY DISALLOW ALL INBOUND CONNECTIONS! So all the 60Gb of bandwidth we are paying for is essentially useless. Not to mention the numerous members that were expecting to play on a new server slated to run in this week, are going to be upset, and my clan has no server any more.
Strike Three?
I'm so pissed off right now. I just...don't know what to do any more.

Maybe you should get a clue?
You obviously did not change your bandwidth, as Telus seems only to be providing 2 bandwidth, Highspeed (whatever that means in Canada) and dial-up (56k).
You my dear did upgrade to more free traffic (60gb), nothing else...
Oh and btw, Telus offers Web and Email service, be happy that you can play tremulous at all as that is certainly not covered by your plan.
Sure, it sounds nice what they are offering...
But ask yourself what is wrong with a so-called ISP that offers PCs on the basis of a monthly fee?
Oh and did I mention that YOU HAD the choice between the Thomson SpeedTouch 516v6 high speed modem with power adapter.
and
Wireless gateway deviceā (includes a High Speed modem, 4 port router, 802.11 b/g wireless access point and firewall).
Maybe it's time to start reading the manual and find out how that firewall works?

Perhaps Caveman, you could be a little less snide about this, as I have not attacked or insulted you.

This statement does not make any sense. I never said I changed my bandwidth. We never had internet before this at home because of my mother.

That is just stupid. Do you think I didn't read these things when signing up? I'm not as stupid as you make me out to be. What i do with my bandwidth is mine choice alone, and not Telus's. Playing tremulous is not an issue. It is setting up a server (which if you had actually read the thread, you'd know).

I'm not debating the payment, I'm angry that they're not allowing me to use the bandwidth that we pay for to be restricted to only outbound connections.

Yes, I have read the manual and talked with their representatives. Yes i do understand how the firewall works, and for the love of god I do not need it. I am running secured linux machines throughout the house, and one mac. The point is that Telus's firmware installed on the Siemens deliberately blocks everything except the web administration page and the telnet access. (The telnet server is accessible, but you are refused entry even with the correct pasword. So why they have it running I don't know.) Even with the proper port forwarding ( or even DMZ ) with that router, it's still blocked. And no they didn't give me a choice between router and modem-only. They just gave me the router. Only recently while on the telephone with an agent did I finally hear that I could get the Thomson.
PS: Now could you be a little less stupid and actually contribute. Your post (perhaps un-intentionally) was very offensive to me.

Threadnecromancer...

60GB isn't nearly enough to run even a small tremulous server anyway...
-
And he still does not comprehend the difference between bandwidth and traffic-limit... *sigh*
