Laser fence from Unreal 2:

Wouldn't that be cool in Tremulous?

Yes it would be cool, but what would it do?
Stop aliens from going thru or damage them when they try to pass?
Fence would also have to have some sort of size limitation or you would just be able to place it over the whole map :)

I thought humans need more encouragement to attack, not to defend ?
How about this: humans get no money for killing if a turret deals the killing blow. It would certainly encourage humans to come out, without touching the stats of turrets and teslas.
Not that the fence doesn't look pretty, but tremulous is designed as aliens-are-melee-only game. It would be too hard to take down with only stage3 adv. dragoon able to shoot. Now try taking down the fence with melee aliens... I'm sure players would soon find a lot of abusive places where laser generators can't be seen, not to mention touched.. Aliens don't have grenades or splash damage.
And if you make it deal too low damage, then what's the point of it ?

I have other idea.
Attach lasers to triggers that make alarm sounds. So if some bug cross the laser, will get a bit of damage and will trig the alarm. Will be interesting because is a strategic artifact, and will enhance the feeling of the game.
map idea, anyway. Its mappers that make maps so maybe will ignore anithing about that, mostly because mappers area everything against gimmicks.

Mappers can already do such things with a bit of shader editing and triggers, I guess it would be good for mission styled maps.
Some kind of buildable that does 'alarm' job in later stages would be cool though.

Laser fences in Unreal 2 ( and in the official mod for UT2004 ) don't work like that. Once up, they block everything, even bullet fire from both teams. Once they absorb enouth damage, they are destroyed. Using that to hide behind would work but you'll be unable to fire back.

Interesting, what mod?
