I've finally got the new driver installed and it works alright, but there is one problem.
In Tremulous, mouse input lags about a 3/4 second behind the actual physical movement. For instance, I can move the mouse over one inch on the mousepad, and about a 3/4 second later the cursor moves, sliding into it's spot.
This is a pretty large problem, as Tremulous is a FPS involving quick mouse movement, and a 750ms lag is a bit of a problem.
fglrxinfo:
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon Xpress Series
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6747 (8.40.4)
Anyone know how to fix this problem?
PS: And yes, I know ATI + Linux sucks, but I don't have the money or desire to upgrade the family computer when I don't need to.

how exactly did you assume ati's drivers are to blame?
-
Because they've be extremely fussy to set up properly among other things
-
8.41 is the newest

dud i use 8.39 u suk

Version 8.40.4 can do that, yes.
- Get another one, but preferably another VGA.
- recompile your kernel with an increased polling-frequency.

I'm using a debian stock kernel, so I will download and install a vanilla kernel and make-kpkg it.
My polling I assume you mean mouse polling interval? By default it is set at 500 which works on every other computer I run tremulous on. Nevertheless, I will do what you say because I've never had this problem before and I don't have the money to get a new graphics card.

IF you are using debian-stock then the polling is set at 250 and not 500, check /boot/kconfig26 for CONFIG_HZ_*
-
Oh...I didn't know that. Thank you Caveman. The vanilla kernel is set to 500 when I defconfig it.

You have Windows.
Your name is Dexter.
You probably don't know what a graphics driver is.
