Single Player Game Mode hass been discussed for ages now, by differen people.
I suppose it might be time to give some thought to the matter.
This isnt meaning to say:
"hai GuYz!!! Lets make single PlayER!!LOL!!!!11!! Itll be easy!!11"
This is to figure out how to do so, the problems and suchlike.
It makes sense to me to make a Human Single Player first of all, as we know what we would want and need to acheive.
But I understand the uniqueness in an Alien Campaign to rid the galaxy iof humans.
Its just more scary fighting against aliens (scary, aliens) than ourselves.
We need:
Objective Maps
K0dez (not my area)
OBJECTIVE MAPS
Objectives might be:
Kill all aliens in the area
Hold off alien attacks for ??:??
Take and hold strategic points in a map.
Go around pressing buttons, unlocking doors so you can escape
Escape the place.
That sorta stuff.
Now, it seems unfair to me to make one person do all the mapping, it would be a huge operation for one person, to make 20+ decent maps.
As well as this I dont think any of us would see it come out in our Natural Lives.
I believe the workload should be shared among people.
This would make the Trem Community a true community ("We Fucking Built the Game"), and it would be a much quicker operation.
However, problems of this are:
Co-ordination
Co-operation
Following the plans.
Confusion
Communication
(Im sure some members of this forum will be able to think of/make up many more... But thats good, we need to be realistic)
Before we get any ideas on the table, we need to give this idea a survey, some critisism, some development.
See if it can be done.
The best thing about a community made Campaign is that you would never finish it, the story could be continued for ages.[/list]

Make Ingar do the maps, he'll probably do it all in like, 20 weeks (If they're NaNo sized of course ;) ).
-
Really?
I would rather he volunteered himself, rather than being volunteered.
-
Yeh, he speed-mapped the first NaNo beta in a week ;)
-
nice.
Pretty fast stuff.
I wanted to promote the whole community mapping with this as well.
As long as maybe he checks over, edits them and if he so feels, details them.
But I really dont wan to even think of commiting anyone to anything yet.

Please post all your fantastic ideas in the Feedback forum!

multiplayer is always the betst part of nay game. single player is meh. maybe a co-op campaign or something would be interesting.
-
co-op campaign, sounds complex, though its an idea, how would it sorta work?
-
play half life 1 on the ps1. That's gotta be the closest thing to a co-op trem possible.
-
multiplayer is always the betst part of nay game.
Complete nonsense. I don't think I even have to clarify to you why this is complete nonsense.
-
well, its the best part of this game anyhow.

Quite the eyeopener when you realize Tremulous has no 'singleplayer' option.

Jay Fullmer, 38, yesterday became the first American to get to grips
with the concept of irony.
"It was weird" Fullmer said. "I was in London and like, talking to this guy and it was raining and he pulled a face and said, "Great weather eh?" and I thought - "Wait a minute, no way is it great weather".
Fullmer then realised that the other man's 'mistake' was in fact deliberate.
Fullmer, who is 39 next month and married with two children, aged 8 and
3, plans to use irony himself in future.
"I'm, like, using it all the time" he said. "Last weekend I was grilling steaks and I burned them and I said "Hey, great weather."

if a bunch of people are going to collaborate on a single player mode it should be super detailed whith many possible courses of action to take: Ex. pushing some button makes ship blow up sending humans in pods to some alien planet, or aliens invade ship, if button not pressed, and your forced to fight hundred plus aliens. im sure it would take long time to make but the product would be amazing and introduce a new level of gaming to open source free games on the web. so if a team is ever made to do this time should deffinately be taken to make it as kick ass as possible; even if it comes down to years. probly pretty obvious but hope it helps :D

*Cough*.
With Quake 3 engine...? Ewwww!

Alien behavior is so much more complex than human behavior. All of the aliens would have to behave differently, and I don't even know if you'd be able to get AI to handle wallwalking.
For these reasons alone, I think an alien mission would be significantly easier to make.

Didn't TremBot have wallwalking aliens?

Wallwalking aliens has been done.

Now thats what I'm gonna agree with for single player ;)

****sitting near human bot-base for 3d hour in the single-player game...
"When those ****tards will finally stop camping? "
-
I'd like to see an alien campaign too maybe.
In the case of an alien campaign against humans, you'd need to make some nice dancing patterns to have the humans actually be a challenge. Alien movement is more complex in general than human movement and such, but don't forget that dodging on humans can also be complex.
-
An alien campaign would be easier :P
Haven't you been listening?
An alien campaign = player controls alien
human campaign = player controls human
Human campaign would be harder to make, because realistic alien play with bots would be very complex.
Alien campaign would be hard but not as hard because you could make the bots only use hitscan weapons.
I know someone who has a scaleable aimbot, which could make the alien campaign have difficulty levels.

I just got a cool idea:
A Tremulous "tower defense" mod.
Wouldn't that be totally sweet?
-
That would be sweet lol

A mission map for painsaw training would be superb, someone please do that :)

A mission map for painsaw training would be superb, someone please do that :)
Or even just a mission map to train noobs to play the game, not necessarily just the painsaw

A painsaw vs tyrant level would take out 2 variables that make it hard to program ai: wallwalking and bullet dodging.
But of course, the level won't be only that or it would be too boring :X
-
I believe it's a great idea. If we could make a series of training missions for newbies to the game (Similar to America's Army, for those of you who have played it) it could help them become better players before they entered multiplayer servers.
The ideas that SNDM expressed in his first post are probably the most realistic. None of them seem that hard to complete. They would require pretty heftily modded games, though. (For example, kill all aliens in the area would mean there are no spawns for either team, and the humans would have an invincible armory and medistat. You might even want to eliminate the need for an RC in that mode.) None of them are out of the question, though.
So, if we're going to actually do something about making a single-player trem version, I say we get started now, and sign people up for certain jobs (Coding, mapping, leading, co-ordination, etc...). We would need to get the word out that we're creating a single-player version and get a group of interested individuals together. Also, we'd need to have a forum so that the new "Devs" can communicate besides this forum.
I'm dead serious about this project. I'd love to see our tremulous community band together and have the gamers create the game.

Wow, you just expressed what Im trying to say clearly, forthright and with a hint of bravado, I like it!
I would like to help in this, but Im not the worlds best mapper...
Im sure we should let the best at their areas play a big part in this.
-
Ok, so I took some initiative and created a forum for the future creators of this project. (I also tentatively named it TSPM, for Tremulous Single Player Mode)
If you are interested in submitting ideas or helping out with the project, go ahead and sign up and start posting your ideas. The quicker we get ideas up and the more members we get going on it, the better.
The link to the forums I created is: http://tremdevs.freeforums.org
I'd love to see some of the best modders and mappers of the trem community come out and share their abilities. Together, we can make a kickass game.

A Tremulous "tower defense" mod.
Basically that's what you're looking at. Tremulous does not use botlib (adding that is not easy) so it will be pretty much tower defense or "clear the room, here's a medpack, keep moving" type of co-op/single game. This would end up looking a lot like SVEN co-op probably.
Things to do:
* AI controllers for enemies
* Additional scripting entities
* Campaign maps
* New weapons/entities/rules (medpacks, limited spawns, etc)

The AAS file is provided for ATCS. The human bot is functional but currently minimalist, it runs with his rifle and shoot eggs, ignoring aliens players and defenses.
Probably a good base for starting what's discussed above ;)
-
If you want to see some 'pretty good' AI with bots (Human & Alien), then join [T]Tbot, GEZ|Defense|Twin has done some pretty impressive work on them. Awfully intelligent acting, except for flame-throwers and Lucifer cannons. That, and they won't pounce or go around to climb up ledges.
-
then join [T]Tbot
Whao, I haven't noticed that before. Any info about this mod ? The GEZ website doesn't mention it.
-
It is not fun they use aimbot But kick you when you use it I do not use aimbot But they let them use aimbot

Okay, better understanding now :
1/ lame bot by vcxzet
http://www.mercenariesguild.net/patches/?do=details&task_id=58
(stopped, but source code used as a base for TremBot)
2/ TremBot v0.01 by Amine Haddad (amine)
http://www.mercenariesguild.net/patches/?do=details&task_id=96
(stopped, but source code used as a base by GEZ team)
3/ [T] TBot by the GEZ team
http://tremulous.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=97914#97914
(in development by Defense|Twin of the GEZ team, currently no release, only a running server : [T]Bot)
Single Player seem more realistic every day ;)

I'm not expert but I believe you'd need one for every possible entity size so it becomes a bit cumbersome.

2/ TremBot v0.01 by Amine Haddad (amine)
3/ [T] TBot by the GEZ team
Can anyone tell me what the difference between these are? What was each developers contribution?

Yes :

since the patch-release i got the bolib to handle multiple aas files and figured out how to pass a bounding box size and physics values as parameters to bspc. so every class gets its tailored aas.
I have never heard about somebody working with the cyrri source code.
As I know, lame bot and TremBot doesn't use path system, they follow human players or camp.
[T]TBot seem to be an enhanced TremBot with waypoint files, evolving, etc ... Play on the [T]Bot server, they are clearly aggressive ;)
-
Whoah, haven't seen you in ages SirFrancis, Do ya remember me? (I must have fed you enough times ;) )
Anyway, I would agree with psaw training, and possibly base building tutorials for the new players, seeing as all they do now is camp or feed :/
-
The people from [T] are the kind of people that do not release sourcecode.
-
AVPS could do wallclimb and pouncing made by aliens.
maybe it wasn't so smooth also, but the story and the environment scared the shit out of the audience.
So... dumb bots can work well when placed in neat atmosphere.
I rly didnt expect much more of those xenos than to crawl into my face as soon as possible.
-------------------
but i guess SP should have a kind of quality to be successful that is way over the power of the community.
for training and once-in-a-lifetime fun... well maybe...
