Tremulous finally transferred to Simple Machines! Give the dev's a w00t!
-
Finally. This setup is WAY better than the last, just add some better skins please.
-
Looks great, Timbo. Hope you don't get too many "zomgwtf it's different, kill it" emails/PMs/etc...
-
Its the form of my website but change the skin it looks like crap
-
Freaking A, this layout is such a wonderful break on the eyes from the old one. Guys, when you make a custom theme for this board could you consider using some lighter colors, at least in the post windows? :)
The quote code is a little more cumbersome than most forums, but look at all the stupid new formatting styles we can have
fun with! :D:D:D
(Oops, looks like about half of those don't work right. Oh well.)
-

Unfortunately they're inevitable. See this thread ;).
-
Oh, and the best thing to ever come to these forums, avatars. Although it appears animated ones won't work, though perhaps that's just because it had to resize the one I tried; it might work if you get one that it doesn't have to resize. Timbo, any word on this?
-
avatars +1
settings +1
design -1 (should tremulate it a bit, i liked the previous icons. now its a bit.... off-topic ::))

I'd still prefer an overall darker theme myself though not to the point it causes readability problems.

I KNOW! ITS AWESOME!!! That is the first thing i checked for.. i've been wanting avatars on for a long time. Mine is animated and appears to work though it isn't resized..
I also just noticed i now have the power to ban people.. :D!
Let the karma bribery begin!
-
Where in the hell do you change the shins!!! OMGLAWLZAGAHWEEB!
-
btw how does this karma stuff works? :-*
-
btw how does this karma stuff works? :-*
You can applaud or smite people. If you applaud them for being awesome their karma goes up, if you smite them for being stupid it goes down.. its just a feature mainly, nothing happens when you reach 99999 karma.. (or does it!) though if you reach -99999 Karma you get poked in the eye with a pointy stick.
-
i kinda liked the old forums. the brightness of these forums surprises my eyes.
-
Good Skin That should be good for everyone would be the DilberMC Theme. There are 12 different colors to the skin and every user can select which color they prefer.

When you change someone's karma, is it anonymous or does the recipient get to know who did it? Also, how often can you change a single person's karma?
EDIT: By the way, these smilies are ugly as sin. Any one of our members could make a better set, or you could just as easily find one free online. Can we arrange this, please?
-
I don't care if they know if i am smiting them. If they say or do something stupid, i will smite them. I will award useful posts though, although i doubt i will see very many.
-
I don't care if they know if i am smiting them.
Nor do I, it's just nice to know is all.

There are settings i believe to change it to be several different ways. I am pretty sure people can not see what karma you give them, that is typically how it works, and i have no idea where mine came from. As far as the limit goes... i dunno.. just keep applauding me until it tells you to stop and let me know what the limit turned out to be :D
-
I wish karma was post-based(like Slashdot).
-
I think David made an SMF theme that looks like the old forums.
-

If you're talking about my original post, it was a congratulatory one.
However, Get some skins
-
btw how does this karma stuff works? :-*
what you do to the universe it does back ;D
@Timbo: Could this change in forums mean that other oft-spoke-of and much-anticipated Tremulous news may be rapidly forthcoming? :)
-
Grrr...
Don't worry phpBB, I still love you...
Honestly, I fucking hate SMF. It may have more features, but it looks butt-ugly.
Is there any way I can access the old phpBB forums?
-
.. i'd expect a better theme eventually.. one thing at a time though. I'd rather they spend time making games then playing with themes.
-
Honestly, I fucking hate SMF. It may have more features, but it looks butt-ugly.
I've seen some decent looking SMF themes.. but the one thing that annoyed me the most about phpBB was it's lack of properly defining "since last visit" for new posts. Hitting refresh over a weekend would yield me a page of 80-some posts, all of which I've read already but it still shows them as new (and doesn't take me to the "new" post when there is one, but somewhere around where the new post was the first time I clicked on it).
-
I agree with Kaleo in that I thought the old forum was slick looking.
I agree with PIE in that I'd much rather have devs spend time being game devs and not worrying about forum themes.
I applaud you both. Bravo, sirrah and sirrah, and a lovely good day to you gentlemen. (PlayerOne is raising the level of discourse in honor of the pleasant new surroundings.)
-
Wohoo SMF the best forum platform :) Nice upgrade.
-
Good job Timbo, I know how long this has taken you. Let us hope moderating is a bit easier now. Onward with the banhammer!
-
Niiiice, SMF... I mainly am on the HLP forums (which uses SMF), so I'm used to this. :D BTW, for those who are wondering, this blue theme is the SMF default. HLP looked like that at first, too.. take a look at it now (http://www.hard-light.net/forums). ;)
-
Well, finally a new forum :)
I guess the natural thing to happen is to have the 'tremulous' theme looking like the page, but also a 'classic' theme for the ones who liked the old forum looks :]
-
i like it. i can finnaly punish people for having second life avatars. :police:

Clicking 'smite' doesn't even come close to the punishment they deserve.
-

and we can stick a [smite] toothpick up into your ass ;D
-
Big YAY to the new engine, I love SMF... tho -1 for turning avatars off and still showing turned off karma... :-\
Since we can turn on and off other ppls avatars it wouldn' be a bad thing to have them. Unless you're concerned about the sizes of them...
-
There is one thing I dont like here..
In phpBB, new posts in a thread were visible, there was an orange file-icon, small but visible.
I miss that in SMF :(
And there are no good, dark themes :/
Besides, it's a good software...
-
And there are no good, dark themes :/
www.hard-light.net/forums
-
And there are no good, dark themes :/
www.hard-light.net/forums
slightly better, but that contrast would burn out the eyes of the uber-l33ts.
-
You could use it as a starting point, and modify from there, I guess... replace the red with the alien bluish egg / OM color.
-
lol, avatars disabled. i was expecting that to happen rather quickly.
-
Equilibrium
F!@#ING !@#$ !^&*ERS WITH @$#* CAKES! The party ends before I even get here!
Wanted to use this little gem as an avi. :(

Hey, I was too lazy to find something interesting :P
Big YAY to the new engine, I love SMF... tho -1 for turning avatars off and still showing turned off karma... :-\
Is it turned off now? I didn't have access to the buttons yet since I haven't spammed enough on the board.
-
...
...
Ok, Timbo: COMMUNICATE. Just tell us if you're going to do something like disabling avatars. Otherwise, we'll just think you're crazy off your ass and disabled them because of all the positive feedback people were giving regarding them. Really, if there's a good reason, you're kinda responsible to tell it to us as the leader of the community.
-
hmmm i was online when the change came, got some 404errors, then smoked a cigarette and came back to a fully working new forum. it's understandible that some changes had to be done afterwards.
switch was SMOOTH and thats the point! ty devs.
-
IMHO, the best forum upgrade would have been to phpBB3 (http://www.phpbb.com/) which has an infinitely better default skin and I believe is much more powerful.
They are at the finals test versions (RC7 :o) and hopefully will have a Final "soon". Considering the old forum was using phpBB2, it would be a natural upgrade.
Despite of that, the update broke many links. Links pointing to the old URL (e.g.: http://tremulous.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5059) are not being redirected to the new ones (e.g.: http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=5059.0).
-
That's fixed easily with a small PHP-Script...
-
I thought SMF had an admin function you can use to do that automatically?
-
karma works, why are all of you so stupid?
-
GAH! I want my avatar back! I've had a taste of the good life, i can't go back to a pseudo sig avatar again!
-also it appears my ip address viewing ability is gone...
-
I heart the moderator tools.
Now trolls are a thing of the past.
-
Are repeating sigs (more than 1 per page) next on the chopping block? :P
-
Are repeating sigs (more than 1 per page) next on the chopping block? :P
If timbo says we can, then yea.
-
Well, you can turn all sigs off in your preferences.
But Paradox still has an avatar. How long until the masses arrive at his door with pitchforks? :P
Glad this system seems easier for the moderators to deal with the crap (from the handful I've talked to already). From moderating other boards/sites/etc, I know it can be a boring job to wade through it all.
-
Well, a majority of the commands are more intuitive, and the instant moderation options are quite nice.
PHPBB3 isnt that great. It has no ajax, and is only a marginal increase.
I would suggest MyBB, but it isnt as widely used (read supported) as SMF
-
I think David made an SMF theme that looks like the old forums.
Ages ago when the SMF idea was first floated. Did a bit and then stalled, mainly due to lack of knowing what it should end up like.
http://tremold.davidsev.co.uk/
My suggestions: Remove post counts. Really easy to do, and cuts down on spam. Remove post-based groups too.
Despite of that, the update broke many links. Links pointing to the old URL (e.g.: http://tremulous.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5059) are not being redirected to the new ones (e.g.: http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=5059.0).
Easy to fix, in .htaccess:
RewriteRule ^phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=([0-9]+)$ http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=\1
-
While I applaud your efforts, the old forum theme was based on the old website which has long since been retired. It's pretty impressive how close you've got it, really. Ideally a new theme would fit more closely with the existing website. One of us will probably get around to this eventually, but if anyone else wants to give it a go they're more than welcome.
-
I'll look into it, but no guarantees.
(I suck at designing)
EDIT: Spelling. Need the edit reason mod...
-
if this new forum makes the devs post more often then that's great ^^
-
"Holy crap, where the freak am I?" was my first reaction
-
EDIT: Spelling. Need the edit reason mod...
Always seemed redundant to me. Who reads the things?
About the upgrade:
Karma system: good. Banhammer on mods: very good. I can see the coming weeks being a lot of fun.
Style: hm. A bit blue and washed-out. Nothing a quick bit of firefox plugin wizardry won't fix.
To those who took the opportunity to have another underhanded jab at the devs: you suck more than words can say.
-

I do.

Oh words can say, just not within the limits of civilised society.
-
Someone please get rid of the fucking scrollbars in posts!
-
O.o .. what scrollbars?
-
Look at David's post above mine.
Also, we need Fast Reply!
-
Fast Reply: Check your Profile settings, "under Look and Layout Preferences", turn "show quick-reply" option to "On by default" (1st thing I did).
Scrollbars: There aren't any... are you running at 640x480, or is your browser resized to half window size, or what? Which browser you using?
-
SMF makes scrollbars on posts that are over two lines long. They don't look like they're useful either.
-

Are you sure about that?
Because, I've been using SMF for about 2 years now.
And, I haven't seen this problem.
In fact, the only time I ever see a scrollbar is if there are

tags, or oversized pictures, in a post.
What do you mean?
Can you take a screenshot, using the PrtScrn button, and upload the picture to www.tinypic.com ?
Because, as you can see, this post is well over two lines long... and I can see the whole thing on my screen.
Do you want me to post a screenshot of what I see?
-
>_< had to reregister
-
Screen resolution is 1280x1024.
(http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/8364/scrollbarlr6.th.png) (http://img142.imageshack.us/my.php?image=scrollbarlr6.png)
It also does it for Hard Light's forum, which is SMF too.
-
That's a feature
Scrollbars even for large avatars exist

jr2
Daaaaayum, you've got everything but a nail clipper and a corkscrew on that thing.
// Ever played the Ur-Quan Masters? I had a nice spot of fun with that space sim (though the time limit dealie really annoyed me).
// Can't say I ever tried FreeSpace, though. I'll have to take a look.
-
Ahhh, SMF, good work :D
-
What point would it serve if the posts already scale to the post length?
-
I have scrollbars. They don't seem to be moveable. I really don't care though. They take up a fraction of the screen space all that crap jr2's has installed gobble up :P
Personally, I like the new forums. You can turn off images, signatures, avatars, many of which were an extreme annoyance on the previous boards. More options, mod tools are better... If I dig deep for a complaint, I'd say that it would be nice to have skin options, but I gotta dig real deep for that. The present skin is pleasant and readable, if a little bright in a dark room ;)
Timbo and anyone else that may have been involved, much appreciation and thanks. And that extends beyond the new forums.
-
They take up a fraction of the screen space all that crap jr2's has installed gobble up :P
:p Some of us have nice monitors... If I want space, I press F11 and: (and, I have a 2nd monitor with the same rez!)
EDIT: Ann: take a look at my signature for a Walkthrough for setting up FS2: Source Code Project.

Answer me this: what the hell is going on here
http://www.bandstand.org.uk/~benm/tremforum-broken.png (http://www.bandstand.org.uk/~benm/tremforum-broken.png)
edit: it works now. but for that brief moment where it didn't, it looked very odd.
-
It loaded the pic as position:absolute. My guess is only some of the css had loaded, or you have old stylish / GM scripts designed for the old forums.
EDIT: I now have motivation to make a cool new theme. By doing so I can forcibly remove that travesty below my name, the 'Posts: leet' counter.

That happened to me as well. I just reloaded the page and it worked right though...

That happens in SMF if the page isn't completely loaded (usually happens to me if I'm uploading & downloading @ max speed while trying to view forum pages, or if I'm having Internet connection issues). And, yeah, the fix is to reload the page.

Just disable the post scrollbars for all browsers with CSS.

i have a new icon next to every thread, even ones ive read repeatedly.

Your browser is not properly refreshing the page?
seems to be working a bit more correctly now. :/
another thing ive noticed is that suddenly everyones email is visible, even though they were hidden before (and chosen by users to be hidden)
-
What is mine? I chose it to be hidden. But I don't really care, it the email I use for all forums/games and never check it on my main computer.
-
Suggestion: Turn avatars back on, but make sigs appear only once per page (or per thread even).
Yeh? :D Neh? >:( Meh? :-\
(Vote Yeh!)
-
Hmm. Maybe that would work...
-
There are various mods an so on that can be applied to SMF, but I want to make sure the base forum software is running well for a while, before we start adding things.

What is mine?

its hidden for me, i guess mods can see any email tho?

Hmm... I'd edit that e-mail out... otherwise the crawling spam-bots will be a-comin' to spam your e-mail account into oblivion.
-
hmm only admin status can be seen, mod status not.
it should.

Although it is handy when you have a certain 'disfunction' rofl

I'd be more worried about people from the forums emailing me (00)... i edited them for safe measure. Believe me though Geni3 he did post the actual email you provided. You definately will get spam if he posts your email out in public like that though... maybe a PM next time lava..
hmm only admin status can be seen, mod status not.
it should.
I agree.. If someone sees something fishy is up i'd like them to know i'm a moderator and tell me about it so i can do something about it.
-
Avatars kinda tell it, but not every mod has one.
Timbo, know any way to get the moderator rank to show?
-
I know you guys dumped the "Administrator List" and "Moderator List", but on the main page, you could perhaps have a "Meet The Team", or something.
-
On HLP, the user's custom text shows their status. I'm not sure if this was done by an SMF mod, or just done manually... I can ask them if you want.
