Title: Spamming Hack
Post by: UnplayedNamer on May 13, 2006, 01:50:56 pm
Just got kicked from the Central Hive db server - not very surprising really as my name (Footissimo@Ubuntu) was coming up as spamming 'lol' on the messages repeatedly (like one or two times a second for a minute or two).  Obviously it wasn't me who was doing that (I was leading the humie board at the time and a tad busy trying to tussle with Coolero, well getting my arse handed to me, but thats another thing :) ), but someone voted to kick me because they saw my name and people don't think otherwise.

Anyway, this has happened loads of times - someone comes on and does some hack to make it look like another player is spamming (usually with 'lol').  I presume the devs are aware of this?  It's difficult to locate the one who is actually doing the spamming, though I presume they wouldn't actually be doing much in the game.

Oh and some guy was running around as alien, in a battlesuit yesterday - it was funny as hell as the suit was lying down then would jump up like a rag doll when the alien jumped..he didn't do anything nasty with the hack (and had the same stats as the alien he was currently evolved as) but it's not great news and presumably a problem with the Q3 engine.

Edit: Wrong forum :(  Supposed to be in 'Feedback'

I've seen something similar with a S1 human who had a battlesuit model that had textures messed up, was all flat shaded green and brown. So i'm guessing its somekind of hacked skin as i've seen similar effects in other Q3 based games.

Sorry for OT but I have another graphics bug. Once in a while when I try to zap someone as advanced marauder, I see the purple pulse gun shot between us instead of normal lightning. It looks funny. However, I haven't seen it as human yet.

Update: I've seen it as a human too a few days ago.

corrupted frames? who know.
I have played against this guy, "footissimo@ubuntu", and seems a good guy. Whoever kick him is a idiot.

Most servers allow people to use the same name as existing players which is likely what happened. It should be impossible for anyone to spoof chat in another way. I have yet to see any of the issues mentioned except for the marauder zap.

It seems to happen when humans are spraying with pulse rifles all over the place and you zap, or atleast if the target is doing it. Replaces your zap animation with a long pulse 'beam', but for me its the same colour as a regular pulse shot.

I have seen that "wrong skin" bug a few times... one time a clanmate was a dretch skinned with some kind of a mini-battlesuit, even producing battlesuit sounds.

It was neither a hack or intentional, it just happened. The next time he spawned everything was just fine again...

Cheers, Danny

Seen it several times with the spammer thing - I didn't notice someone with the same name as me entering the other night, but next time it happens to someone, I'll check the sheet.

For the incognito spamming, it could be that they have a name containing all spaces:

https://bugzilla.icculus.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2705

There is no fix yet, but you can identify the player by running "/serverstatus" and then "/callvote clientkick NUMBER".  Or on trembot,
"!listplayers", and "!kick NUMBER".

With an empty name, they would just type out the name of another player before their message.

For the battlesuit exploit, this is fixed in SVN:
