The charge happens automatically after holding down mouse2 after moving over a certain distance. It has nothing to do with releasing the mouse the way the dragoon's charge is. Is this intentional?
Also, some players are able to do insane jumps with tyrants, like up to high platforms that require wall jumping with dretches. I can only do little hops that are worthless and more of an amusing quirk than a usable game feature. Is this a bug or some trick that isn't mentioned in the manual?

yes, intentional.

They probably charged up a 'ramp' (angled objects, curved walls, etc) and timed their charge to reach max speed at the end of the 'ramp'.
And yes, the tyrant's jump is tiny.

I don't know what you're talking about. You will be able to hold and release the charge on demand in Tremulous 1.2.0.
-
The time between max charge and automatic release is increased, yes, but you cannot hold it indefinitely. Not at all.
The 1.2 HUD will have a meter so that you will more easly be able to tell when you've reached max charge.
Damage from Trample is also made effective again due to multi-hitting being fixed.
Yes, it's intentional.

Well no one has addressed these super jumps. How do some players jump a tyrant up a huge wall when I only get tiny hops?
-
They probably bounce against the wall somehow.. IDK, never seen huge walls jumped, but I have seen them do some pretty impressive stuff. EDIT: Read here (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=5589.msg84114#msg84114).

Note that the tyrant charge (when not used for locomotion), especially when you can hold it, is the alien equivalent of the luci spam. (I call it "charge spam".) Has anyone else made this "discovery" yet?
-
Not sure about that... I thought the normal rant attack was more of the Luci spam... they can do it fast enough.

The charge is very good for going up up and away on sloped terrain/walls, examples being the pit at Nexus and Arachnid's storage room walls (it's just awesome to see the "WTF"s of those humans who think they're safe on the highest stacks of crates).
Also, the tyrant's jumps have some practical uses when you use trickjumps, like jumping the gap between base platforms at ATCS.
