Title: The Crossing
Post by: ShAdoW on November 26, 2007, 09:21:21 pm
Hiho everyone!

I don't think every-one of you heard of "The Crossing", it's a Cross-player game also: SP into MP all mixed up
Here some trailers:
[Interview] (http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/8142#/)
[teaser] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rR8F_ik8A1I&feature=related/)
[trailer] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhroZHTjNFw&feature=related/)
Now my question: How should this work O.o?
I mean there are a bunch of ****** in the Internet who can't follow the rules while online playing.
Have a nice day!

How it _should_ work?
Ask the people responsible for it, not us.

Hmmmm....

Could be interesting.
SP+MP... dunno... Probably you can do missions alone to get equipment and some kind of rank, then you can access missions at MP...? What can unlock further missions at SP and so on. At least i imagine that like this.
If yes, i there should be some savegame limit (MaxPayne) or checkpoints (KnightsOfTheTemple) to avoid die->load->die->load->win->save->die->load at single player sessions.

i'll check this later.

the sprint loaded swing out sword looked kinda cool. and the movement mechanics. my guess though is that a lot of people will just go round attacking random guys so you can never really do what you want.

WTF CrossPlayer? New?

Multiplayer games with Cooperative mode or Bot support have been around since ever. But I haven't seen any game where you can save a multiplayer game. That would be new.

Why the checkpoints? I prefer to play like this:
lose_any_hp_or_armour->load
use_ammo_when_not_necessary->load
accomplish_anything_as_excellent_as_possible_to_t he_limits_of_human_capabilities->save
No unlimited savegames? Son of a!

If you read the Wikipedia article (which I'm sure most of you have if you want to know about this game), you'll find that the main game mechanic seems to be a sort of "juggernaut" style of play, with one person playing as the protagonist and everyone else as enemies that are trying to stop him from completing the game.

Now, I'm absolutely in favor of radical new game ideas, but this one will be hard to pull off. What if the protagonist has to leave the game early? We hardly notice things this when it happens in normal multiplayer rounds, but in this case it'd ruin the game for everyone else. Then there's also the problem of you being stuck as an enemy in the game most of the time when you join a server, even if you put the game in wanting to play the protagonist.

On the other hand, this game could really strike a nice blend for some people. I, for instance, like the style of single-player gaming, but I prefer multiplayer games just because I like having other people there--whether I'm communicating with them or not, whether I'm getting pummeled by them or not, I just like playing with or against other people. So if I could get the wholesomeness of a single-player gaming experience and the community feel of multiplayer, that'd be neat.

Oh, and if I find out this game will have stealth missions, I'll have to change my opinion and my pants.

Sounds interesting.

Perfect Dark on the ol' N64 had a similar game mode called "Counter-Operative" to go along with its cooperative game mode.

It had some rather severe balance problems, but it was fun sometimes anyways.
