Title: Mods and servers - user friendly UI needed
Post by: UniqPhoeniX on November 30, 2007, 10:09:45 pm
Currently, there are a lot of small & BIG mods and changes, with only console and 1 menu - "Mods" to change between mods.

What I'm suggesting, is make using mods easier for everyone. So that you could take the main menu from 1 mod, background from another, Alien HUD from third and so on with loading screen, Human HUD...
Also add a possibility for preview for HUDs and loading screen in Main menu.
This probably requires changeing current mods a little, but shouldn't be that big of a problem.
Include HUD changing to in-game menu.

Also, the Tremulous folder would need to be cleaned up, the best way to do this is to add subfolders for your mod/HUD/map/whatever, and NOT just dump everything in base or base/ui folder. I think I read from somewhere that its recommended to only download newest version of a map because it allows playing older versions... not sure where and which maps it includes.

Making a server needs to get easier. Changing options in Main menu, like: map rotation (just add maps from a list 1 by 1) and # of BP should be easy to make.

I would REALLY like this to be added in Tremulous 1.2, to make this game easier to use for everyone, especially new players, which can only be good for the Tremulous community. Of course it would be better if some1 made this before 1.2 to find as many bugs as possible and to help devs get 1.2 out faster.

You can do the first suggestion. Unzip the .pk3 for the HUD, and mix and match.
You will probably have to edit some of the menu files.

@OP, Please differentiate between client-side mods like HUDs and server-side MODS :)

As for the maps, afaik you are wrong in that assumption as every map gets MD5'ed and if you don't have the same version the server is running... you are out of luck.
Compatibility of different MD5s is an urban myth.

As for the rest. It is a good idea. Just go ahead and do it, it's only zips and text-files :))

I am not suggesting this to only use myself.
I meant that it should be easier for those players who are not used to editing files, who don't know all the commands, simply NEW players. I can change HUDs, .cfg's, but not everything. I can't make a new version of every mod to be compatible with this. It would also be easier and faster for others.
It should be possible to do this from main menu, not game folder and text files.

So basically you want a rewritten client, that takes every old and new mod into account?

They can go inside of the .pk3

The only games where servers are easy to run are those like Half life.
Keeping the server system as it is ensures a marginally higher quality of servers.
