I'm not suggesting that we give humans tanks, I'm just wondering if something like this would be at all possible. Vehicles scattered throughout the map that can be entered and exited if a player is close enough and presses a certain hotkey. Something like what the Halo: Combat Evolved engine offers.
edit: FUUUUUUUUUU NOOB POST

I haven't played for a while, but are there any new maps that are appropriate for vehicles?
Also, what would you propose for alien vehicles?
-
As I said, I wasn't suggesting it be implemented, I was just asking if it was at all possible.

If you know enough and have the time for it almost anything is possible.
Whether it is easy or not is another question.. and if you don't want to implement it then ease doesn't matter.
-
It's possible, and fairly easy in the sense that you can make a vehicle model and bbox move around in Q3/trem, but Q3 physics only deals with bbox translation which b0rks any vehicle that isn't square and gives a very unrealistic feel to driving them.
-
Thanks for your responses.
@ PIE - I'm thinking of using the Q3 engine for a game that my friend and I are working on, and I'm just broadening my knowledge of the abilities of the Q3 engine.
@ Taiyo - Yeah, I had forgotten the Q3 uses square b-boxes for rotation. That's a disappointment.

Well, this is the problem with coming up for new ideas in Trem as opposed to other FPSs: balance is such an important issue that nothing new can be implemented unless it either has an equal counterpoint for the other team or serves to correct an imbalance that is currently in place in the game.
No matter how fun any potential mod might be (I honestly don't think vehicles would be very fun in Trem, though), a balanced game is always more enjoyable. If you tried to shoehorn something like this in, it would wreak havoc. You'd have to create a new alien component to compete with the purpose of the vehicles (what purpose do you think they'd have, by the way?), then you'd have to create new maps to accommodate vehicle transport, then you'd have to tweak all the alien classes (or even create an entirely new set of aliens) to be effective on this new, different style of maps, then you'd probably have to tweak the human weapons to deal with the tweaked aliens. When that brutal process has run its cycle, what you end up with is an entirely different game. Or maybe... 1.2?
I CHANGED MY MIND. DO IT NOW.

Yes, single-person vehicles are possible, 2 people ones, youd have to be imaginbative to get it to work.
Aliens would have to have some way of taking these doown, a mighty snot ball launcher?
-
As I said, I have no plan to implement these ideas in Tremulous. I'm simply exploring the possibilities of the engine, and it sounds like ioTech3 is not the way to go.
-
I think your game shouldn't have vehicles, it should have aliens in them!
-
FPS based in the future. (Like Halo, Quake, Doom, UT)
Hopefully small, drivable, vehicles, (Like Halo)
Game-wide leveling system with the ability to filter out certain levels per server. (Like GunZ)
Buy able weapons (outside individual game servers) that are usable in every game server you enter. (Like GunZ, Warrock)
-
I sincerely hope Trem doesn't become another generic korean MMOFPS.
-
Name one.
-
Back on topic:
You would probably need to make it a full-fledged mod, at the very least. You could start by stealing the vehicle code from SW:JA, I suppose.

Plague Bringer:
Nice to hear from you again. This (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torque_Game_Engine) may be of interest to you. I'm sure you know of it, and it sounds applicable to what you are doing (making a Tribes-type game, but putting the buying outside the server, like in Starsiege). (It sounds like a Halo meets GunZ thing, kinda like a MP version of Starsiege meets Deus Ex). Good luck with it. How's it coming along? (I thoroughly enjoy the artifact design and naming aspects of the process, if you need any free and somewhat useless help). Cheers!
-
Thanks player1. I had looked at the Torque engine, but we're going to start game design more reasonably by modding an existing game (Tremulous), rather than coding from scratch.
Naming is definitely one of our (My and Delrey's) shared weaknesses. We could use your help, thanks.

I think the maps are a bit too small for vehicles. With all the luci spam you get at the end of the game, it would be hard not to blow up your teammate's tank.
Although, a one - man speeder bike for humans might be cool. For aliens, you can just hitch a ride on a tyrant if you're small enough ;) .
-
We shouldnt cage people with, OMG BALANCE!!!!!
Do what you feel like, itll probably be very cool.
-
never thought of anything of the like in trem, but now that you mention it, I think it could be fun.
Now for the alien-human balance. The vehicles could have minimum range, so anything too close to them and that isn't directly in front of them would be impossible to shoot. This would make the vehicles useless by themselves, by powerful with an escort (that doesn't TK).
And for ideas of vehicles, I was thinking of these. 1. A narrow circular one (like circle standing) with one guy in and one/two weak guns with the ability to fly and move fast. 2. A lucitank, very slow, very big (perhaps too big for some places) with little ammo but very powerful. 3. Teslatank That could be interesting, a four wheeled tank with an inbuilt tesla generator, the driver decides when to release a short burst of energy, during this burst, any alien around is zapped, it wouldn't be as powerful as the immobile teslas, but would be great to have a portable defence while moving base ...
And as to the "alien vehicle", I guess there could be a type of alien hijacker. I'm taking this idea directly from the "terror drones" in red alert 2 (C&C). This small aliens would not be able to inflict mush damage and wouldn't have much health, but unlike other aliens, they would be able to enter an vehicle and either decide to damage it (from within and on a Xdmg/sec basis) or it might be able to try to control the vehicle. That could be really interesting, the human trying to aim, and the alien putting him off-aim :)
Anyway, these are only ideas, it's only my imagination going wild, no need to take me seriously :D

Moving this to Feedback.

Mech Walker Vs Giant Spider Crab Slave? (Do a Google image search for "Giant Spider Crab", I love these things!) Maybe make it so they have to be built and require a Reactor/Overmind to function. Just a suggestion, I'd rather have walkers than any other type of vehicle in Tremulous if this gets done.

You'd need to register an account or something like that for it to work?
sounds good tho

There was a mod for Quake 3 Arena that was called called Military Forces Quake 3.
It had vehicles (aircraft, tanks, Humvees, a boat, etc.) and supposedly ground infantry
though I was could not find out how to play as infantry. Maps seemed large and were outdoors.

just make it look like this

this is a good idea but i am afraid that tanks would be nececery for the aliens to make it even don't u think? but i was just thinking y don't we do motorcicles ans jeeps for the humies and worms and flies for the aliens? also what about planes?
-
A human in a car would be fun plus along as it doesn't shoot its just an easy way to get kills for aliens dretch jumps on car when humans get out it eats them easy
-
I 'spose it is not a matter of whether it can be done, as JKA has working vehicles (although crappy). Ground vehicles, like cars, would get a bit of a pain but floating things such as speeder bikes (or, if you've played JKA, a Swoop bike) would work fine. The problem is getting first person for passengers.

I think the collective wet-dream boils down to MechWalker vs. Flying Alien, which, if introduced together, could influence the Jetpack vs. Tyrant (Skybase/Ventbase vs. Too-Big, Non-Wallwalking, Lame-Jumping Lumbering Behemoth) type of endgame (on a map like Karith or Thermal or even ATCSzalpha). Both together, in one mod, with a lot of play-testing, and maybe initially limited map rotation, might be a cool mini-mod. Love/hate/indifference?
Humans as lurching berserkers and Aliens capable of flight? A new alternative at Sudden Death (new weapon/class unlocked and "buyable" for a goodly/major amount of creds or comparatively few evos)? Open the Sky Project meets the old Berserker idea? IDK, mebbe could be cool. The walker could have one of the following: rockets/nades/freezer/zapper/gaussgun/sniperrifle; and outside it the Human is naked with a Blaster. The flying alien would be a relatively cheap class evo-wise (2-3 evos), while the walker would be the equivalent of "buying" a Tyrant, like 1000-2000 credits.
Instead of a kills-based stage-up, it would be time-based (and therefore unearned in the hardliner/oldtimer school of thought) like Sudden Death or Rampage, but unlike Rampage each individual player still needs the credits or evos to get the upgrade (cool stuff), and unlike Sudden Death it doesn't affect structures or rebuilding. An endgame variant, time-based, but still with a cost in credits or evos to participate, that doesn't affect buildings, and could be combined with SD, or not, as the ServerOp sees fit.
Also, the walker would be a field pack which the Human would have to deploy beyond his own buildzone; in other words, you have to take it away from base and "unfold" it to get inside. You can't carry another weapon besides your blaster, and you can't wear any armor (well, maybe a helmet and light armor, but I'd rather that your team has to support your lone berserker scheme or that you have to be skilled and lucky to use it).
The flying alien would either not be available to evo-down to or would only be available at respawn, limiting its use, likewise.
-
In a team-based game, maybe each mechwalker should cost Bp and be a movable, usable building.
And it can only be built inside power radius, and recharges inside power.
However, it can only fire outside, to avoid Electromagnetic interference with the buildables.
And it must be repaired with a construction-kit.
-
And you have to be able to hunk the horn!
so aliens know when to make space.
And a minibar would be nice!
windshield wipers....to remove the dretches on the windshield.
-
well when i think of it doesn anyone of you people play HALO? because i was thinking for the humans a "jeep" 4X4 with a montable ret on top and a passager's seat also for the aliens the same but it is a worm throwing/spewing acid on the human (like the adv goon only a worm) and make it look good! (i sugessed to copy the "warthog" and the "gost" from Halo 3/2/1 but mak the ghost that ONLY aliens can use the ghost and ONLY humans an use the worthog ( make it simpler just copy it ) LOL
