A friend and I want to try setting up our own dedicated Trem server, more as an experiment than anything else, and we were wondering whats required to run a decent server with around 12-16 players. This includes, how powerful does the PC need to be(CPU, RAM, HDD, etc), and how fast a connection we'll need(including up/down speeds). Actual connection speeds would be appriciated, not just "Cable or T1". Cus cable can run anywhere from 256kDown/28kUp to 5MDown/512kUp, and many wireless connections are synchronis up/down.
Again, this is just an experiment, so we don't want to spend muh(if any, weve got a fair amount of hardware lying around). So don't go telling me to just rent. If I have to rent, I don't want to set it up. Also, keep in mind, it'll be a PC running just a Trem server and nothing else.
Any help is appriciated, thanks.

I'd say: If you don't have at least 10mbit upload, don't bother. Will lag too much for everyone if it's larger than like 8 players.
-
To have a lag-free experience with decent (playerside-) netsettings you will have to get about 56-64kbit/s up and 56-64kbit/s down per player.
Meaning on a 512kbit/s upstream connection you may host up to 9 internet-players, 8 if you want it really stable.
Mind that it only works for 8-9 people if nothing else is running on that line.
I have some experience with hosting dsl-servers on a 512kbit/s line as I did so for 3on3 clanwars (moh:aa, cod) in the past.
In Germany it is possible to rent decent linux root-servers (Athlon 3000+, 1GB RAM, 1TB traffic included) for 39EUR/month. We have up to 4 tremulous servers (50 player slots) running on such a machine without lags.

This exchange might be useful. I don't think I'm going to host a server on here yet, but I thought someone else here might:
Ok I can setup a server but you will need to get a cfg to run server. Also it
will $1.50 a slot, so for 24 man it will be $36 a month due on or before the
1st.Please let me know if you want it at that price and I start getting
files.I have a paypal account for you to send payments to.Just need to know
if you want it still.

In my opinion, that price seems reasonable. By comparison you could spend $65/month on renting a dedicated linux server capable of running probably two 24 player trem servers. Although you would have to do all the system administration yourself.

I agree with tjw. If you know someone with linux knowledge, and that is trustable, join up with him for hiring a linux box. He could have the calls on the system, and you could have the calls on the server.

I am setting up a guide to running a tremulous server.

If you need any help, you get the box set up, and ill do the rest when you have that done.
