Title: Visual Change On Stage Increase
Post by: Odin on January 09, 2008, 04:09:37 am
When a team goes up in stage, their structures should change visually(at least for aliens), to show "upgrades" from evolving. Alien structures grow spiky and more menacing, while Human structures get more armored and high-tech looking. Switching the models would not be instantaneous(as this is unrealistic and stupid looking), so the structures would animate as they upgrade(with a 5 second animation, or something). Optionally, structures could be unusable in this transition, and again optionally structures could have increased armor or effectiveness(5hp upgrade for each stage, for example).

I think this would make the game more interactive(and thus more fun).

I'm reminded of researching "spiked barricades" in Warcraft 3, and as soon as you hear "Research complete" all your buildings get spiky at once.  Always thought that was a neat effect.

Don't see any problem with the visual addition except for the lack of modellers. The gameplay addition however. Hmm. A strange one which can not be instantly thrown into the good or bad box although the 5 hp seems a bit weak in any case while the 5 seconds 'time-out' might seem unfair since you can't really control stage-ups when you are defending.

You would have to think of a way of making nthem look coller without escaping the hitbox.

Its an ok idea, but it might give away your uintended secret about being S3, so you can catch em with lucis when their pants are down.

There is no need for an animation, sure it would be cool, but anything will be cooler than the present state of affairs- A mere skin change might be enough to spice things up a bit.

It makes the camp strategy fail, the new one would be:

Kill, Stage Advance, Camp, Kill, Stage Advance, Own

Having buildables change appearance while nothing about their functionality changes is pretty stupid.

escpecially if you want to surprise-buttsecks the other team while it believes that you are on lower levels still...

Which is why I suggested an optional change in their functionality, in the first post.

And everybody knows the value of posts calling for changes to the buildables.

To someone like me, appearances and atmosphere of the game mean quite a lot...
I do not think I am the only one..

That is very true, but you overlook simple game mechanics. Changing appearance strongly suggests changing functionality. Just changing appearance without changing functionality is a bit stupid. It will just make things even more unclear for the newcomers who already have a hard time with Tremulous' steep learning curve.

Most of the time if you can see their base, you can figure what stage they are on.. usually if you are completely oblivious to stage changes it is because you are camping.

I think all things considered this is a neat idea. Though this would mess with balance in some way or another if there was functionality attached.. so while neat.. it can't be said it is a good idea.

If you need modellers, just make a competition in this forum... Also we should just get more improvements from things like :defcomp: :booster: :hovel: :repeater: and those may change the look of base/surrounding structures.
