Title: [SOLVED] i have no clue whats happening.
Post by: war on January 20, 2008, 03:12:33 pm
Lately, i have been on trem and experienced going 999 every 5 minutes. its unbelieveable. i've played trem for about 1 yr and never had this happen. Also, this keeps on coming up :->Warning:Cg_Readnextscreenshot way out of reach, 18853>12458. I dont know if its my cable connection or tremulous.  The cable light on my modem keeps blinking and just randomly going on and off. I NEED SOME HELP! =]

i'm technically noob, but it is possible that your connection is set to a much higher amount than your provider can give.
in this case, you demand higher bandwith that is possible, and it makes the thingy frozen for some minutes.
like at my job we ordered 16Mb/sec where 4 was possible and we froze out in every 20 minutes.

but plz tell us if its only crashes in trem, or otherwise also.

eeerrr... do you play more tremulous as much as you use the internet otherwise? ;-)
if yes, you're problem is about your connection (as mentioned before), and expect to get a leather-covered copy of the Original Legal Copy Of Tremulous.

Well I'm assuming your using the same comp to post your responses, so it seems as if your internet is ok...

How long ago did this start? Have you just reinstalled Trem, or some big file? Did you do anything that might have affected it before this happened?

That it is your internet's fault, and you'll have to fix it. Check for loose connections, plus firewalls or anything easy like that. It could be that your service is just really bad in which case there's still nothing we can do.

Well if I think about it, if your connection been stable up until 3 days ago, then something changed. While your ISP could have quietly altered its bandwidth throttle to choke you a bit more....you might want to check your system for any  changes...some viruses nowadays don't actually do anything directly harmful to your system except steal bandwith to forward billions of emails about rich Nigerian widows of ministers etc etc. Check your firewall for outgoing connections, get a location of the IP for any funny looking ones, and if your computer is calling Russia or China then thats your problem. If you don't have a firewall:

Start --> run --> cmd --> netstat -a -n -o

should tell you whats happening. If you run Linux I wouldn't have the foggiest.

EDIT: - but then again if you run Linux this wouldn't apply in any case. :P

my 2 cents at any rate.

If the cable man says that the internet is fine (and plain internet is) than it's probably a problem with tremulous, try just reinstalling and see what happens.

I have the same problem, I think it's the modem you are using, if not then probably the bandwidth. With me every 10-20 minutes or so the connection drops down to 0 for about 5-10 seconds. It all started after I got a new modem since the old one died for some reason.
Hope this helps, even though it's late.

i think i know the problem its really stupid but may work make sure all your cables are plugged in to the modem and router tightly sometimes i stick my feet under my desk and i get 999 ping for no reason only to find that i disconnected the internet. a loose connection can do that and is probley what is causing your sudden lag spikes. sry about my other post was half asleep DX.

Well, I'm pretty sure all cables are connected, and I've even tried using cable instead of wireless, but still I get that period of minimal connectivity every 10 or so minutes.

Have you tried contacting your ISP?

Yeah, but not lately. Too busy to spend 40-60 minutes explaining what the problem is....So I live with my connection for now.
BTW my ISP is one of those companies that really suck with customer service. :(

Check for busted ports on your modem? Harsh damage to the ports can cause a ton of nuisances. My current modem is busted, we're getting a new one soon, but I sometimes have days where I go 999 very often. The ethernet thing actually is taped down to the modem just to keep the end held up so it works.

For about two months at the beginning of '07, I went 999 like 1-3 times every time I went on Tremulous, and it was always for like 10 to 60 minutes. I could talk still so it wasn't like lagging out a few times a day, which I would have preferred over stupid shit like what I had.
