I started the #tremulous.pickup channel on Quakenet (http://www.quakenet.org/) because personally I am bored with public games, and I don't think that I'm the only one. Some of the negative things about playing in the usual public games is that it's hard to cooperate with the rest of the team. And there are always some idiots that just wants to ruin everything. That's not the only downsides, I'm sure that you can come up with alot more.
The reason that I like matches, is that you get a completely different feeling compared to public games. For example the adrenaline rush early in a game when you play as aliens. When you see that all of the marines are marching against your base. And then your whole team of dretches groups up, and storms the attackers as a pack. Leaving no traces of the humans left. In other words, It's easier to coordinate attacks and really work as a team. That's where tremulous really shines!
The other reason for starting the channel, is that the team that I'm playing in (#teardrop) are always looking for other teams to play against. But there's few active, and that makes finding opponents really difficult. I hope that #tremulous.pickup will help with this problem. Because I want to believe that if more people gets a shot at playing matches instead of public games, some of them will become interested in playing in teams.
So basically #tremulous.pickup is a place where players can meet others and play in mixed teams. If your interested you just need to join the channel, and show that your interest in taking part in a game. After enough players have signed up, two are choosen to be team leaders. They will each take turns in picking one player for their team. And when everyone has been selected it's time for the showdown.
Finally I just want to say that if there's any questions feel free to talk to me. Send a private message on the forum, or visit our channel, See you there!

Is there a teamspeak server available for team coordination?
-
Well, at the current time there's no teamspeak server available. I'm a strong believer of the opensource philosophy and therefore I stay away from teamspeak, and instead I run a Asterisk server. Asterisk is a Voice-over-ip server, that is compatible with the most frequent used VoIP protocols available. Like SIP, IAX2 and H.323. And I suppose that I would have no problem with people using the server in #tremulous.pickup, but then you need a VoIP client. #teardrop uses the server for all of our matches, so it has been tested.
Here is a site that has some more information regarding VoIP and what clients you could use, VoIP Information (http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-Open+Source+VOIP+Software)
And here is a list of VoIP clients that I personally recommend.
Windows (I haven't personally tried this client, but it's the softphone that most #teardrop members use.)
1. Kiax (http://kiax.sourceforge.net/)
Linux (All of them supports ALSA, and works perfectly with a microphone)
1. Ekiga (http://www.ekiga.org/)
2. Kphone (http://sourceforge.net/projects/kphone)

He has point. No need to invent smth new when there is a good well-tested solution. And I don't think that really good peace of software is not worth some excitement.

I'm not sure which if your reffering to Asterisk or Teamspeak, but from my point of view both solutions have been tested. And I would like to point out that they aren't designed for the same purpose, so it's not revinventing the wheel. Asterisk is a PBX server and that means that you can do just about everything with when it comes to VoIP. But I don't want to start ranting about Asterisk vs Teamspeak and which one is better, that's not what this thread is about. If you want to find out more about it you can read on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asterisk_PBX). And the usual flamewars between proprietary software users and free software users is also something I would like to avoid.
In the end, everyone has the freedom to choose what they want. And in my case that is Asterisk. Because I know that there's alot of people that play Tremulous and don't use Windows. And there isn't any support for other OS in Teamspeak. Except for Linux, and the linux version stinks in my opinion. With the current solution it doesn't matter what OS you use. That's surely a better solution, don't you think?

Uh Oh ...
I thought that teamspeak is a game feature that needs implementation. My mistake. Sorry for this misunderstanding.
-
No problem
-
And tada there's an echobot now also ;P
-
(#teardrop)
We will miss you in pub games, because Teardrop guys are a nice to play with or versus :D
-
You won't get rid of us that easily :D
We will still play on public more than we play pickups (because of the current low interest in pickup games) But when (and if) more teams is created, then I will totally quit playing public
We need more people in #tremulous.pickup, and as charmed pointed out earlier we now have got an echbot. This makes joining and creating pickup games easier for the users.
Hmm.. I will also take this opporunity to challenge all available clans to play against #teardrop! We will challenge anyone! 8)
Here's some of the clans that we are interested in playing against(in no particular order): SGA, FU, GA, Nex.
-
Nex is not a clan...but we'll gladly take you on 8)
Sweet idea, i'll check it out.

Sorry about that, well if you want to play against us come to #teardrop and we can discuss when and where.

feel free to use it for anything
-
Nice , is it your server Smokey?
-
I will not be very active in the tremulous scene during the Summer. So currently I'm trying to secure a dedicated server for #Tremulous.pickup, and assign some people as admins so I don't have to feel bad about neglecting the channel during the next months. Stay tuned!

Good , pickups were usually great in NS - can't wait to try it here...
