Title: Map - Thanatos (beta 3 : 2008/02/12) (For Competition)
Post by: TRaK on February 12, 2008, 04:20:42 am
Thanatos Alien Testing Facility
Desperate to gain an edge in the fight against the aliens, the humans convert a 20th-century prison into a research facility designed to contain aliens and perform tests upon them. However, this plan goes horribly wrong when a few aliens escape from their cells and infest a portion of the building. After being inserted into the containment area, the humans establish a makeshift base in a pump room and attempt to eliminate the alien threat.

With this map, I tried to create an environment that felt like an old, creepy, WWII style factory, but with a few modern touches. The map is reasonably small, and gameplay is pretty much untested so far, so bear with me. Feedback appreciated :)

If you find these too bright, keep in mind they are taken at r_gamma 1.5. They seem to be either too bright or too dark depending on the monitor I'm using  :-\

Thanks for reading, playing, and commenting,
And, most of all, enjoy :D

TRaK

edit: updated to b2 because of a missing texture.
edit2: it seems that on MGdev, RC does not spawn at start for humans. Seems to work in 1.1 trem though. Anyone know why?
edit3: Seems that this also happens on 1.1 servers, but not when I devmap it locally  :-\ I'll have a fixed version up soon I guess.
edit4: b3.

I'm not going to post what I already told you, TRaK. Good job and I'll be looking forward to check out the next version with you.

Oh, and by the way fix that horrible game-breaking bug you showed me.

and as i said before trak, the detail you put into your maps is excellent.

Just to ask, from the screenshots, I see no actual testing equipment, which would be cool. Also, you said some of the Aliens escaped, so perhaps some cages with Aliens.

Nicely built, but it looks like you just cloned X-Labs from RTCW and used a different colour scheme....

For what it's worth, I've never even seen, played, or heard of X-Labs until now. Any similarity really is purely coincidental.

I'll take it as a compliment :)

If no one understood, the railing serves no purpose at all. You should remove it in the next release.

X-Labs looked, from the youtube video that I saw, a lot more sterile than this. No broken glass or dirt. Somewhat like the minimalist lab facilities of Portal.

What's so bad about having a decorative railing? My map would look quite boring if I removed everything that had no purpose  :-X

It really detracts from the atmosphere. It breaks the suspension of disbelief.

Why would you have railing next to a wall? Because you were eager to use some downloaded prefab? Experienced level designers do not do this sort of thing. It is very amateur looking.

I have worked in three different warehouses that have steel tubular railings along most of the walls. They are bumpers to stop people from taking chunks out of the walls with the various cages/trolleys/pallet trucks used in these places. If anything they are not amateur but accurate - such a testing facility is likely to need these as there is much heavy equipment and many caged aliens to move around.

Huh. Didn't know that.

Hey, I was just trying to be constructive. I realize now that I may have come off as a bit insulting and I apologize for that. But there seems to be an abundance of obsequious twits in this community that get their panties all in a bundle because of that. Hey, I'll wear my low karma rating with pride. I'm happy to not be part of your little elitist inner circle. This is the problem with places like Dretchstorm where people play maps that suck because someone with elevated standing within the community created them. Maps with no artistic or gameplay merit are praised and see playtime on major servers (case in point, "Rotcannon", "the Bunker", et al.)

...Here comes the karma-murder.

Nothing could be farther from the truth, the map owns, and trak is popular because of the fact that he makes great maps. people get elevated in the community by making great stuff, or at least thats how it should work.

there is no excuse for insulting, and it appears as jealousy over trak's leet skilz... not that u r a bad mapper yourself... xD

Not at all. This map is so much better than most of what gets put up here. TRak is a great mapper and his creations are nothing short of orgasmic.  That said, I do think there is an undue amount of sycophantic praising and not enough scrutiny on these boards. Aeolos is a supreme testament to this fact.

Apparently you never play on DS. I've never seen either of those maps run on that server, and I've played there a ton. In fact, the map options on DS were decided by a month long vote on the website and not "someone with elevated standing".

DS plays a lot of Trak's maps, because they are great. Keep up the good work, Trak, and ignore people like this guy who clearly suffers from an inferiority complex.

Please, everyone. I don't want this thread to turn into a flamewar. This thread is for feedback, constructive or otherwise, on Thanatos, feedback which Nathan was kind enough to provide. He has stated his opinion and let's leave it at that. If you feel the unstoppable urge to confront him about it, send him a pm or something.

Thanks :)

That had nothing to do with TRak's map and should have been kept out of his thread, Kaleo.

It's too bad that instead of responding to my sincere and heartfelt messages you had to go tattlebitch to the mods. It's a shame that this is the response from the community when I try to leave actual feedback. It's a pity that I've derailed TRak's thread into the abyss, but I can't help it when twelve year-olds who need to feel like they are important over the internet direct such rude, tasteless comments towards me.

I'm sorry, TRak.

If that's sincere and heartfelt, then you should talk to a therapist.  And I'm sorry, tattlebitch?  That's what moderators are here for; if you have a problem, you contact them.  Sheesh, some people act like this is fourth grade...

What's odd is that I thought he was banned earlier today, but perhaps a ban trigger was missed.  Either way it's fixed.

Trak, next time you see me in IRC (possibly tonight, if I don't pass out soon) flag me down so I can get a tour of the map with ya.  Maybe we'll take over a server and playtest it for a bit :>

A few of us played some games on this map last night.  We pointed out to Trak some of the flaws as we saw them (though he was just as quick to point out things we hadn't noticed yet).  I don't think any of them were real showstoppers, just minor things really.  I love the detail everywhere, makes it feel like you're inside a facility and not just running around a map.
