sheeps at warcraft, bugs at AVPS, birds here and there in the sky at many games, flying spaceships at quake2, but at tremulous we don't have any critters yet.
as 1.2 is released A.S.A.P., we are just in time to create something that adds some bonus flavour to the game.
let's keep it simple to model and easy to code, but theese are the general characteristics of a critter anyway.
let your spirit fly!

Nice idea but most trem maps are indoors to start with.. usually you don't run into birds indoors, or in the void of space.
If there were more outdoor maps it might be worth it.. but then that is also just spending dev time and cpu cycles on superfluous stuff.. i like the idea though myself.
-Moved this to feedback since.. this seems more feedback related than Off-Topic related-
-
critters can be anything, both indooors and outdoors. dumb robots left there by humans earlier, ghosts of fallen warriors, automatic messages left there for eternity playback, or basically anything.
and this is only an idea, not a demand, if any coder or modeller feels like to do this, there is a free way. i am willing to make a concept art of it though, as it's the only usefullness that i can do.
set your minds free ;-)
-
sounds like it's up to the mappers to do this, not the coders.
-
Well.. it would be nice if you could turn it off if your comp can't handle it or some mapper goes nuts an abuses it.
-
since duke nukem could do a hint when looking into the mirror and while pissing, i beleive there are no impossible ideas in gaming. ;-)
-
Me... what?....oh nvm.
anyway. That would be nice...maybe the aliens can heal faster if they eat one.
-
If players would get extra credits from them we would have critter hunt time in start of every game. Kinda reminds me of savage (game).
As long as they don't give anything to players by default I'm fine with the idea. Call me sick postal 2 fan but having cats running around for humans to use them as silencer. I don't support animal violence but in postal 2 it was fun feature. ^^

As someone who is an avid lover of cats, I find that devoid of any respect and insulting and distasteful.
-
Critters are cool, but I want a crate or barrel I can push around and show whos boss, I also want to block a corridor with crates in case of a rant rush, haha bastards, back you go I would say...
Im rambling now, stop me please.

Even I have a cat. And I love it so much... But you are totally correct that it might be too distasteful.
-
Yeah, use puppies instead. They don't wriggle as much as cats do.

Oh my! A real life defense computer.
-
All those cats in one place.. how'd you do that? Cat-herding? Anyway, I'm thinking alien larva or something.
-
Few years molded cat mint?
-
how about attaching a cat, crying meoooooowmeoooooow when someone is 999? there isn't any other marking of it instead of the freezing yet, and ruined internet connection is usually not anyone's fault.
if you'd still kill the the 999'er, the cat could jump at your throat and kill you in instant.
'Unnamed Player was punished by Pinky the 999 police' or something like that :-)
-
And new internet slang word would spread. I can see it now: "Haha! You got catted." "Just ignore him. He is catting." "Lag! Kick the catter."
-
I prefer "You've got pussy'd" :-D
-
Not kittened?
-
No, catted is better. ;D. Anyway, that would work.. an auto high-ping kicker on low-ping only servers? Basically, in serve settings, you turn the option 'cat' on, and high-pingers get assigned a cat, who appears and kills them. Getting 'catted' would kick you from the server. But, would cats attack aliens, humans, or both??
-
it's just an idea to warn other players that someone's connection got ruined (I'm not thinking about high pings, because temporarly anyone can have lag issues, but no connection at all what shows up as 999). but because it can be also temporary, i don'T think kicking would be needed.
the cat would guard the 999'ed players until they come back or get "!spec 999"-ed, and give them some attention. probably they should not hurt anyone. and they can be 2d, not even a modeled critter.
-
2-D? So, could they be added as part of the HUD? Like a big 2-D cat that blocks your view? Or something following you? I think HUD would be good, cause then you could have custom huds with different cats..
-
Maybe a mole thing that consists of a conical brown mound of dirt, with particle systems ejecting crap everywhere, and a particle system leaving a fading trail behind it.
That would be fun.
-
It better not touch my carrot patch.
-
- dumb robots left there by humans earlier
- ghosts of fallen warriors
- automatic messages left there for eternity playback
As said above, some neato ideas for mappers, it not abused (as said above, also).
I have to agree with Lava, anyone who messes with the cats deserves the karma that it brings. (Speaking of which, ever read Dream of Unknown Kadath, by HPL?).
The invulnerable 999er-killer cat is hilarious, but please put this at #101 on the list of the Top 100 Things to Code Right Away.
The mole idea is also funny as hell, especially, if as you say, you never see it. It would also be funny if it left the floor or ground deformed, and if they occasionally ran into walls. This would be #201 on the above list.
@gareth: Truly a catalogue of cats. Yours or random img?
The hunting phase idea, or a training room, would also be pretty cool. Bear with me here, some people will absolutely hate the following idea, which is not mine, but something I remember from Unreal.
It was much easier to make this for a single-player game like Unreal, which had programmed AI to cut-and-paste.
It would be pretty hard to make for Tremulous, but maybe the coder/mapper could utilize the Quake 3 Arena bot-code.
Basically, it's just a Tremulous Deathmatch Arena, against AI bots who have no objective except kill on sight.
It doesn't train you to do anything except to utilize various weapons or classes to attack.
There are no objectives.
Enemies will be spawned, in an Arena, and they will try to kill you.
You can select from a variety of enemies, and from a variety of loadouts.
There is one major drawback, which I see as a cool feature, not as a glitch.
It would be much easier to have the AI enemy be Humans with various weapons and loadouts, (e.g. - larmor, helmet, prifle & battpack), and to utilize existing Quake 3 Arena code for deathmatch objective (kill enemy; you would have to disable the hunt for pickup items, or utilize it for pathfinding).
It could just be one map, that any player can run locally, and jump into, almost like an SP game, just to hone certain skills. Each Alien class is unique enough, and the learning curve is steep enough, that I think it may be useful to have an Alien Training Simulator: just a small arena, with no objectives, where you can choose to play as any Alien class (I guess builders could see how well defenses work), and could also choose to add a certain number of AI enemies with specific loadouts.
This doesn't differ from existing Trembot projects that much, except that it would be for players to run locally, not as a server, and the bots would only be enemies programmed to do one thing: try to kill you.
Not really an original idea, and one that is partially implemented elsewhere, to the best of my knowledge; just something that occured to me as I wrote this reply.
It's weird, having flashbacks of old videogames I don't even own anymore. It's kind of a lonely memory.
Cheers!

i gues this thread is merging with the "gaia" idea as it is aiming similar objectives, yesyo.
-
These ideas are different enough from that concept at this point to merit their own thread, but a mod which combined some of these ideas could be cool also.
