I was reading the autogen.cfg and found lines saying
set team name: pagans
set team name: strogg.
Is this the name of the Aliens? Stroggs?
Stroggs are the aliens from the Quake series, I think.
Aye, these entries are probably leftovers from Q3A.

Because the Trem devs are pagans
Tremulous uses the Quake 3 Arena source code. More specifically the Quake 3 Team Arena source code. In Q3TA, two of the main teams were Pagans and Stroggs. In this case, asking Carmak would be your best bet.
And yes, Stroggs (http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/Quake4/images/monster_strogg_marine2.jpg) are the Aliens from the Quake series.
