Title: Official Modeling Thread
Post by: mooseberry on March 08, 2008, 07:15:17 pm
Here is a list of all models, concept models, and links to help out modelers/ potential modelers. For now I will list Blender links, because it is free, and that is what I assume most people will be using. If for some reason you wish to see helpful links for another program just post in this thread. Please also post here if you have links to any models, or concept models that you think I missed. Note that as there is no board for modeling, mainly because there is not enough interest nor enough released material, this thread will be the "official modeling thread." I'm not sure whether or not people should release their own models in this thread, or in another board, so input is appreciated. Also please post about any error you think that I have made in catorgizing and listing models.

This is all that I have right now, if you have any more please post here or PM me. Also there were many short questions on modeling, but I did not include them because they were irrelevant/ had no use.

And without further ado:

Released/ completed /basically completed Models:

* Stannums Pics (http://janvanderweg.com/pics/tremulous/) -- Some may not be Tremulous related.

* Chompers (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=7607.0)

* Tyrant v2 (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=5911.0)

* Open the sky (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=5858.0)

* Mr. Nice (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=3701.0)

* New Turret model. (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=8542.0)

* zaishaza's stuff.  (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=9167.0)

Concept Models

* LOD models (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=7474.0)

* Motorbikes (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=7316.0)

* Gaia (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=7448.0)

Dead/inactive models

* Balance Mod Models (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=2833.0)

Helpful Links

* Wikibooks tutorial (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro) - VERY helpful, in depth from how to navigate to animation

* Wikibooks Links to everything Blender (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Tutorial_Links_List)

* Blender Wiki (http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Main_Page)

* Helpful Tutorials (http://www.tutorialized.com/tutorials/Blender-3d/1)

* blender to md3 exporter script (http://www.katsbits.com/files/blender/md3-export-0.2-lgt.zip) NOTE I have not tried this myself, don't know if it works, also I'll try and find more later when I have time.

Little tips:

* You need a to export your model into an md3 to get it working in gtk.

* More to come once I remember what I was going to say.
About exporters. If you use a newer version of max there probably isn't an exporter available. You can however export each frame seperately to 3ds or ase and combine them into a md3 with md3comp.

Note that as there is no board for modeling, mainly because there is not enough interest nor enough released material, this thread will be the "official modeling thread." I'm not sure whether or not people should release their own models in this thread, or in another board, so input is appreciated.

The basic idea is that threads for models can be started in either this, the mapping, or the modding forum and that this thread will serve as some sort of link catalog/hub to easily trace the modelling effort. Should enough worthwile modelling go on then there is no doubt in my mind that eventually you'll get your modelling forum :). But untill then this is the best solution. Good luck in your endeavour mooseberry. If you need any moderator-help just pm me.

It's in the Tremulous folder, could it be possible?

No,  ;)  it's the same thing as http://janvanderweg.com/pics/tremulous/riflemdriver.jpg (http://janvanderweg.com/pics/tremulous/riflemdriver.jpg) showing off both at the same time.

And Survivor, thank you very much again for the sticky, I hope this will help spark interest in modeling in the Tremulous community.

Is this a post/show/release your models thread or is it just helpfull information? (sorry if i missed something in first post) I have a few model projects going  :)
EDIT: And if it  is a post/show/release thing than do you just want links or pictures on here?
Title: Re: Official Modeling Thread
Post by: mooseberry on March 08, 2008, 09:59:50 pm
Basically yes, you can post you models here, I think it would be easiest to keep track of, but if you want you can post it in a different section.

EDIT: When you're showing your models here, just imagine like you started a new topic for them, so pictures, downloads, info whatever is great.

@Mooseberry

You might want to write that the 'Wikibooks tutorial' is a very good guide, it really is a tutorial for dummies (I like :))

Just post wips/requests/questions/noanswers/tips/tricks/everything modeling related in dis thread yo. Fyi, my trem dir has a lot of concept/tests stuff. If something is in there it doesn't mean that its going to be in trem.

Yah, it was very helpful for me to when I was trying to learn.

@stannum Ya, I understand about not all of it being Tremulous work, but it was easier just to give the link than to explain it all. Also whatever people post here, if it is relevant, I will put it up in the first post, but I didn't want to have to go through hundreds of pots right away. Also there were a few, "what program can i use to make models?" threads, but I obviously didn't include those.

If you can find working ones, you should add a link to an md3 importer/exporter scripts.  Without those scripts, you cant export trem-compatible models.

EDIT:
I just looked through Stannums pics, and it just struck me about how much the mara looks like it should be ridden...

You need to optimize that a hella lot!

Consider getting rid of the screws on the grip, you can easily add them with texturing.

And I know you can have 2d screws, but they look so cool.  >:(

Big bump...

Could someone make me some box and barrel models?  I'd like a box the size of a turret, but cube-shaped, one twice as big, and a barrel as tall as a turret but about half that in diameter, all appropriately textured...  I am hoping to make, at least in part, the "GAIA" mod, as someone named it...

Yes, I am too lazy to bother learning blender well enough to make these.  I might take the time to learn it if I ever actually try to make a third team...

Perfectly cubical boxes can be easily made with textures used in many popular maps. (Short list: Karith, Niveus, UTCS, Arachnid2, Tremor, and Thermal)
And I'll tell you how to get them in 4 different colors with no work of your own.
Look in data-1.1.0.pk3 (Rename it to zip and pry it open)
Navigate to: data-1.1.0/textures/titan/
Crate.jpg as well as Crate#.jpg for green, yellow, and purple.
Plaster one of those over all six sides of a cube and viola!
A crate.

Barrels can be respectfully stolen from Overflow's public folder, as seen in his map Flap.
Sample Picture (http://bobbin.vilkacis.net/tremulous/shot0193.jpg)
You'll be looking at the files named "barrels.md3" and "barrels.pk3"
Snag 'em right 'ere (http://bobbin.vilkacis.net/tremulous/)
Title: Re: Official Modeling Thread
Post by: Lava Croft on April 15, 2008, 02:42:00 am
Speaking of the barrels, if you use them in your map, you will have to edit the MD3 file, so the textures for the barrels go into mapobjects/yourmapname, instead of the default folder. This way it will not interfere with anything that might happen in the future.
Title: Re: Official Modeling Thread
Post by: doomagent13 on April 15, 2008, 12:07:44 pm
@Lava_Croft

I am not going to be putting these directly into a map, but rather I am going to try to make them be insertable via layouts, as well as hopefully adding a number of other useful features based on them... (destroyable, respawning at various places, can be built upon, pushable...)

Post by: techhead on April 16, 2008, 08:14:32 pm
There is also a second version of the box design which I could not find the textures for.
Comes in six varieties, as I've seen.
Saw, ckit, and HP logos, each on a different color, as well as the same colors without the logos.

So... I'm not really sure what is to become of this thread, perhaps some mod has an idea? I think it makes little sense to deprecate it, as it still serves somewhat of a list of models, and I suppose now that is what it should become, something ala the "Clan Websites" sticky, just keeping a list. Although now that I think of it the main difference is there actually are enough clans to warrant making a list necessary. Now that we have a whole section for models though, I'm not really sure how this should continue. Basically to sum it up: What to do? Mod please give ideas.

I'm not the guy that made it, but this was a bit of a "If you build it, (hopefully) they will come" sort of subforum, so perhaps just chill a little bit and see how things turn out, then shape the sticky according to the needs of whatever sort of modeling subforum has developed?

I'm sure there is a way, with exporting/inporting, you may need to install a plugin, but I'm sure maya will have the ability to export to blender, if not by default, than through a plugin.
Title: Re: Official Modeling Thread

When i "need" to export to blender then it is better when i don't unse maya?
Or can i make with maya trem models without exporting to another 3d modelling programm?
Title: Re: Official Modeling Thread
Post by: Stannum on August 09, 2009, 02:42:20 pm
You need a md3 exporter/importer for your 3d modeling program.

You can also use md3comp to compile ase/3ds/md2 into md3. Every modeling program can export to 3ds, not sure abou ase. You might need a plugin for that.

The closest thing I can think of is bezier curves, or whatever they're called. You can make a curve and transform it into a mesh. But it's kinda hard to understand what you want.

I'm having a problem with the md3 import/export scripts for blender. I'm running it on linux, and I figured out where the plugins are supposed to go. But I ran into a roadblock; the plugins are in a .zip, so I can't install them, and I apparently don't have permission to edit files in the part of my computer where the plugins go, so I can't extract and move the plugins where they need to go. All suggestions are welcome.

I'm learning bit of modeling now, and read and studied few tutorials about Blender. Now I'm having bad luck in searching tutorials or guides (Found few, but links broken or internet is just pissing me off today) about .md3, plus I don't got enough knowledge of this kind stuff. Sooo... could someone provide least link about  creating .md3?

Yeah, I know this is quite old (even the last reply is from June), but this is sticky, and this needs updating by the way.

Thanks in advance,

I'm planning on replacing the overmind because the model is nearly complete minus texture map.

Make your own .pk3 using the same paths as the data-1.1.0.pk3 so "models\buildables\overmind" and place your model with the name overmind.md3 in that folder. Replace any textures that you are using, put the new .pk3 in your base folder and rename it something like zzz-overmind.pk3 and voila.

I wanted to make some new guns you know like some other gun that's different that can be on some servers, anyways the gun I want to make is going to be called Twisty its a gun that Twists around when you shoot it kind of like a Luci's cannon mixed with a rocket launcher but in this case it goes in circles 3 times and shoots fast I'm only 14 so I don't know much about making guns and I also wanted to make this other gun similar to the Twisty.. Its called directly shooter :s Weird name right? I want these guns to be different i am still thinking about the colors they will be. So far the best colors I think of are maybe purple,red,green, or maybe black some of my friends said red, so I think maybe only those colors if you have a suggestion, send me a message or something:S I totally agree to the fact that it would take FOREVER to make this gun.. The reason i am making this gun is because i want some servers to have different guns like for example Z server it has rocket launcher and Grenade Launcher and stuff. One or two more questions in order to make this gun do i have to make my own server?Because I seen how Z has its own gun on its server.So I get the feeling i have to... okay i type alot xD. My names on trem are Contra|*CookieMonster, Contra|*Glammy/Glamorous Girly Contra|*RedWhite or Contra|*Alexz or sometimes Alex but I'm usually on Starburst,Kitkat,Fun FunFun, or just go starburst or kitkat and ask for Alexz.. I really hope we can make this gun... It didn't take me along time to figure out the names.:S

To replace a gun model with another model, not too much difficulty. You could even add new particle system stuff to make it look better. To create a new weapon, some coding is going to be required. You're going to have to create another weapons class and code it into a game.qvm along with your new weapons model.

I'm going to skip the model creation steps *Assuming you know/can find this stuff on blender.org or something*

First I'll explain how you're suppose to test weapons models the right way

Step 1.
Go to your /Tremulous/base directory and create a folder called "zzz-WHATEVERNAME" copy the file structure of your data1.1.0.pk3 and create a few folders within the "zzz-WHATEVERNAME" create a folder called "Models" within that folder create a folder called "WeapTest" put your test model into this folder. You should use this folder to test your weapons ingame until you get the model right. Remember to zip it up and rename it's file type from .zip to .pk3 when you want to test it ingame.

Actually Coding so weapon works

For a new weapon to work you need to do the following things bellow

This is how weapon's work in tremulous, and i'll briefly tell you what to edit as i explain how weapons fire ect..

1.You need to define Weapon information stuff in bg_misc.c (game)

In bg_misc.c you'll have to define "Weapon name ex: "WP_WEAPONNAME", Weapon price,Stages it can be used,ect..

2.Ammo definition in bg_misc.c (game) How much ammo/clips weapon has you should think carefully about this!

This is what the engine does automatically to get weapon to work you can skip these since they're automated.
3.Pmove (bg_pmove.c game) is called by client or server
4.Pmovesingle (bg_pmove.c game) is called by pmove
5.PM_Weapon (bg_pmove.c game) is called by Pmovesingle

6.PM_Weapon checks for firing, and removes some ammo before firing the weapon
7.PM_Weapon adds a weapon firing event to the players stack
8.PM_Weapon adds some time to a counter preventing the user from firing again for a set time
9.ClientEvents (g_active.c game) checks the stack and finds a weapon firing event.

This stuff was already done by the developers so you don't have to recode it, i just thought it would be good if you knew how weapons worked and which files do what.

10.FireWeapon (g_weapon.c game) is called by ClientEvents
If you're adding a new weapon you have to define the weapon and how it fires exactly look at code already there and just copy and paste edit a few lines rename a few things and bang you have a new weapon.

Also don't forget to add your weapon case in after WP_GERNADE at line #1637
Code: [Select]
    case WP_YourWeaponName:
      WeaponNameFire( ent );
      break;
11.FireWeapon sets up the aiming angles then calls the relevant weapon function (same file)
12.The weapons do different things dependant on which they are.

Remember to just look at code already there, you'll be just fine copying and pasting already made weapons and fusing code from different weapons. Anyways best of luck, this was a very brief introduction into adding a new weapon, there is tons of other little stuff you have to do, but i didn't feel like writing it out hope this gave you just enough to get started.

Paste of merged post
As near as I can tell, he posted two posts that differ in only that he removed punctuation and caps from both Luci's and I'm.

I hope that helped.
PUNCTUATION IS NOT FOR REMOVE.

Stop being an ass, English might not be her first language and she just wanted help on figuring out how weapons worked in tremulous. This is called the "Official Modeling Thread" not the "Nazi Grammar Topic" so if you're not saying anything helpful don't say anything at all as the old saying goes.

Also doublepost, ooops! pretty sure i broke a forum rule hehe fixed

@Volt: Good job on the mini-tutorial, even if it doesn't help Glammy I'm sure there are others it might help.

Sadly, I expect Glammy has more things to learn than simply how to edit the code and I'm not even sure if she wants to know that.

I wanted to make some new guns...I'm only 14 so I don't know much about making guns...in order to make this gun do i have to make my own server?

That is the post without as much repetition and suggestions of what the nonexistent gun could be like.

@Glammy: If you have any more specific questions it's probably more helpful to talk on irc (http://webchat.freenode.net/) (freenode channel: #tremulous). If I'm online I should be able to help.

Edit: Oh, and yes you would have to have your changes hosted by a server if you want anybody else to see/use your guns. I recommend you cross that bridge when you reach it; you have guns to code and model.

Well, I will do anything to make these guns.. So anything that has to do with making them would be useful.

You can start by telling us what you want them to look like. And not in a huge wall of text- a picture would be ideal. That, at least, proves to us that you're willing to do at least part of it yourself, because nobody's going to just do all the modelling, texturing, and gameplay-testing for you.
