I hope my question is at the right place here since I couldn't find any contacts on the website.
I work for a Post Production company and were creating a TV commercial for a client of ours.
We need a shot of kid playing a game for about 1.5 sec.
Since most games have strict copyrights and can't be used for something like this I thought maybe we can try a GPL based game.
I thought GPL and GPL2 where against any form of broadcast of the software but im not sure about that.
Even then I still wanna ask the creators of this game if they have a problem with a 1 sec during shot for a Dutch TV commercial.
thnx in advance!
-
sounds cool, ask them in PM or at the #tremulous irc channel, it's quicker than waiting here for replies.
btw I'm also working at an animation/design/VFX studio, too bad I didn'T have the chance to implement tremulus yet into tv ads :-)

As long as it isn't for an anti-violence commercial I'm fine with it. When is it going to air? I'll have to record it >_>

You'd need more than just my approval. >_>

Some clarification of the purpose and context would be nice, but assuming this isn't nefarious in principle I have no problem. What age would the kid be? For what it's worth Trem is hardly what I would consider a game suitable for kids. If you're talking really young World of Padman might be more appropriate.

Should I ask him the inevitable question?

After seeing timbo post I would think you'd like to change targets. But let's not derail this thread.
-
Depends on what the kid is doing while playing Tremulous, either picking his nose or swearing at the screen.
or maybe even an "Angry German Kid" approach would be suitable.
-
Even serious thread last only a few posts here...
-
thanks for the reply 's, I'm not in control about what is going on in the commercial.
We're not a Commercial Agency we just do video editing, special effects, compositing and color correction.
So we paint the tremulous screens in the monitor where the kid is playing.
The client wants a bloody F.P.S. and the kid age is not yet known. But even then it wouldn't be a problem ...
In Holland there wont be any problems among that and since were only airing it in here.
Though I still think the GPL and GPL2 terms are long en difficult to understand when it comes to something like this.
If there is no problem using Tremulous I will post the final product here of course.
Because I think it will be difficult to record for a lot of you :)
Anyway thnx for the info ... I think I'll just go for it and hope we don't get sued :-X

Not all of Tremulous is licensed under the GPL. In particular, you will be creating a derivative work of the CC licensed textures, and you'll need to contact shaderlab concerning the use of the shaderlab textures (bottom paragraph of the Tremulous COPYING file below):
---------------------------------------------------------- Tremulous License ---
Tremulous is licensed in two broadly separate sections: the code and the media.
The code is licensed under the GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE. This license is
contained in full in the file named GPL. Please be aware of the exceptions to
this license as listed below.
The media is licensed under the CREATIVE COMMONS ATTRIBUTION-SHAREALIKE 2.5
LICENSE. Please read http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/ to learn
more about this license. The full license text is contained in the file named
CC. Please be aware of the exceptions to this license as listed below.
---------------------------------------------------- Code License Exceptions ---
The following files contain sections of code that are not licensed under the
GPL, but are nevertheless GPL compatible. The license text for these licenses
is contained within the files as listed.
src/qcommon/unzip.c zlib license
src/game/bg_lib.c BSD license
src/client/snd_adpcm.c Stichting Mathematisch Centrum license
src/jpeg-6/* JPEG license
--------------------------------------------------- Media License Exceptions ---
All shaderlab (http://www.shaderlab.com/) textures (by Randy 'ydnar' Reddig)
are subject to the following license:
Usage and redistribution policy: Textures may be freely downloaded, modified,
and used in free maps, mods or total conversions provided this copyright
notice is left intact and a link to Shaderlab is provided in the credits or
read-me file. Other non-commercial applications are considered on a
case-by-case basis via e-mail. All other usage requires written permission.
Bulk redistribution or archival of the textures in any medium, digital or
otherwise (except mapping packages for mods) is prohibited.

Obviously the GPL is irrelevant here since it is (presumably) not the source code you are showing. The media license is important.
you'll need to contact shaderlab concerning the use of the shaderlab textures (bottom paragraph of the Tremulous COPYING file below):
cc now as well (http://svn.icculus.org/tremulous?view=rev&revision=775)This is for all the textures & other assets that Tremulous uses.
I hereby place all copies of my work in Tremulous 1.1.0 (either in whole
or in part) under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licence
version 2.5. Users are also hereby licenced to apply any newer version
of the Creative Commons ShareAlike licence as they wish.

Right...have little kids play the game that has cartoon girls popping out of their shirts and has rip-off pin-up magazines laying everywhere ;)

I laughed when I read his post, it was obviously intended as a joke.
*Well, part of it*
